NORTH LIBERTY ENROLLS 804 STUDENTS
Shamrocks Whip Walkerton In Football Opener North Liberty's Shamrocks proved way too much for Wa’kerton in the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon as they rolled to a decisive .<4-0 win on the North Liberty field. Scoring in every quarter the Shamrocks were par r 4 by Mike Holloway and Jim Mlekodaj as they scored all five touchdowns between them. The Shamrocks scored first after several exchanges of the ball. They were spotted to a 2-0 lead on a safety as John Nylander was tackled in the end zone attempting to run a ball out after a bad pass from center on an attempted punt. Penalties had marred the Shamrocks' chances to this point as they were det :cted several times, once calling back a touchdown. In the second quarter. Jim Mtekoduj scored twice on end runs as tne North Liberty tny ß found a definite weakness around Wakerton's ends. With two or three boys delivering blocks to spring the runners on the outside, they picked up good yardage almost every time they circled the ends. Holloway did all the scoring in the second half aa he tallied three timer on runs and kicked one extra point as he Stole the show from everyone. The Walkerton offense was sputtering all day and not until the final set of downs in the game did they gain a first down. Ernie Morrison then gained two on rushes of 18 yards each and Carlos Arce hit Don Ludwig with a pass good for 20 yards. This drive was all that gave Walkerton plus yardage for the day as the hard charging North Liberty line completely controlled pk<y all through the game. This game was played for a brightly colored barrel, which goes to the winner of the Walkerton - North Liberty football games each time they meet. The Shamrocks now have a varsity record of three straight wins over Walkerton as they won twice last year in addition to the Saturday win. The two teams meet again in Walkerton in the last game of the season on Tuesday, October 23rd. One injury of some consequence occurred during the game and Dave Skinner, a first year junior halfback for Walkerton, had his nose broken while making a jarring tackle in the third quarter. He is reported doing very nicely at this time and it is hoped that he will be ready to return to action with special protection soon. N. L.
