SCIENCE TOPICS Boat and fire are involved in more personal accidents each year than anything else, reports the University of Michigan Medical Center. Burns kill 6,000 AnHikans each year, hospitalize another 70.000 and alftxt count, less millions more. Sixty ' per <em of burn injuries occur in or near the home, the rept rt stales. The grunts, squeaks, purrs anti knot ks of fish communicating with fish — sounds first discovered by the sensitive underwater listening devices developed during World War II - have meanings all their own and the U. S. Navy is trying to find out what they are. The male toad fish of Chesapeake Bay, for example, grunts to warn fish away from its nest and makes a sound like a boat whistle during the spawning season, apparently to help the female find him. The Navy has been anxious about underwater rackets since it was found that the sound of enemy subma rines could go undetected in schools of snapping shrimp. Artery ‘blowouts’, often fatal, are being treated with a rapidhardening plastic sprayed on weak spots cf arteries leading to the brain, reports the University of Chicago Medical School. Dunes damaged by recent severe storms along the Atlantic coast will be stabilized by a covering of tough beach grass, says the U. S. Department of Agriculture. The rapid-spreading grass will be seeded along hundreds of miles of shoreline from New Jersey tc North Carolina where its natural sources of supply have been all but wiped out. The grass will form a barrier, preventing sand from blowing inland. Auto colors are signs cf the times and of the ear buyer's mood as well, reports Holland Color. Full-tcned blue, green and black cars are popular during depressed periods, white lighter tone s and delicate color shades compliment the buyer’s happy frame of mind during boom times, the company says, A Bug-powered radio transmitter powerful enough to 'transmit over 15 miles may herald an era in which harmless bacteria will supply electric light for entire cities. The transmitter was powered by bacteria feeding on /agar in a test tube. Research on this
