idence of Miss Kitty Mann, Tuesday evening to arrange for a grand masquerade party, to be given about Thanksgiving. The party will be a very select one, and a good time Is expected. Messrs. Lorenzo Burke, Alex. Goodpaster and Major Lewis have added their names to the Leadek's subscription list. Others would do well to follow their example. Mr. William Scott has returned from Pittsburgh Penn., where he has been visiting for some time past, lie reort3 that things are very lively there, and that he enjoy d himself splendidly. Those who read Louis W. Lamb's first poem, last week, cannot fail to s.h; the mark of1 genius in it. If Mr. Lamb continues in 8ukh work, he may some day take a place in fame b( side those illustrious poets, Shakespeare, Bron and Burns. A large numbcrof young gentleman of our city met at the residence of Mr. George Shelton, Wednesday evening of last week, and organized "The Tube Rose o la mode Club," with Geo. Shelton as Prcs't, M.tjor Lewis, scc'y, and Geo. Brown, treasurer. They met the second time at the residence of William Lewis, 2SS Bright St. on last Tuesday evening and began making arrangements for a grand social cntertainmeut to be given some tim i during the holidays. The roll of the club is constantly increasing in numbers,
and the organization bids fair to become one
of the largest of its kind in the city. Financially, they are bed-rock, and with such an
ittractive name, and nattering prospects,
thev are bound to succeed. The next meet

ri Flnrnnre Keller, one of our most
promising young ladks died Thursday eve nin? of tvuhoid malaria, at the risidtnce o
h-r nnrrnts on Ctdumbia St. She had been
sick but a few dap, and her death casts a gloom over all who knew her. She was a very promising young lady and was a bright light in our literary and social circlts ; a member of the first year class in High School, and lcavts a number of relatives : nl a host of friends to mourn her loss. The funeral services will bo Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, at the Vermont Street A. M. E. Church. Early BliocimilcliiK. "Barefooted came the beggar before King Copiietna." Phceeion, Cato and other noble Bomans had no covering for their feet when they appeared in public. The Roman shoes were of two kinds the calceua which covered the whole foot, and the sola, which covered only the sole, and was fastened with thongs. In the eleventh century tlie upper part of th j hole was made of leather, and the sole of wood. In the nineteenth century you will find at Steep's Bäte House Shoe Store, if we mar be allowed the paraphrase, sentiment and art expressed in the highest perfected form of Boots and shoes for ladies' wear. Whittier, who has immortaliz.xl our language with the sentiment of poeticgenius, was a shoe-maker, and left the bench, where he shaped "soles" to sing in verse that which should shape their "souls" in thought.
Tollt .Tot. In answer to anin-puiry we will tite tha'. Marion county has over 2,000 colored voters, Oliver M. Vorhis it Ls said, will make a long pull and a strong pull for the sheriffs of lice. Hon. J. S. Hinton predicts that Blain? and Lincoln will be the lLpublican nominees in ISM. Capt. Fields, A. D. Harvey, Johu F. B dinond, T. J. Morse and perhaps a half doz.'n others will make the grand regatta for Township Trustee a little liveley. Some one has proposal the name of Conrad Burley for a Justice of the p?ace. Conrad is our candidate, and we will vote for him first last and all the tir.u We are informed that Jacob B. Julian will be a candidate for circuit court judge. Mr. Julian well deserves to b? a strong candidate before the colored people, soever the shoe may fit. Some of the very couneilmen and Aldermen who cast their votes Mon lay night to bring the oflie-e of city sexton into ridicule, were among the number who tried to convince us a year ago, that the ofiice. of city sexton was one which ought to do honor to any colored man. The c:iucus nomine??, with the exception of Fielding Husten, received almost t ie full Republican vote in the election last Mo .day night, but Mr. Huston, tlie only colored man nominated bv the caucus for anv oiliee (and that one of but little imp rtanee) received but 21 votes, the other R 'publica: votes being cast for other Republicans of local celebrity in order to bring them into ridicule. Our Young Je'ollcH. Mr. Jerry Thomas has quit the West end. Wlrat is the matter Jrry ? The Four Associates are Miss-s Rebecca Shv, Flora Watkins, Lizzie and Marv Ridley. Mr. James Covington returned from Chicago last week, where he lias been residing for the past two years. Mr. Elijah Marrs, the Apollo of the East end, is creating quite a sensation among the young ladies of that s;ction. Mr. ILnry II. Gibbs left for Mobile Ala., lsst Monday morning, to ii 1 1 an engagement. He was a favorite here, and his departure is much regretted.
