And right you are, Elder. If you want to have a good time, and give free vent to your patriotism, visit the Exposition building next Monday. Every arrangement has beon made for the convenience of visitors and a good time is assured. Mr. "William T. "When Bill goes into anything he never starts to come out behind. The Odd Fellows' picnic was postponed on account of the scarcity of cars, every available coach being used in conveying visitors to the Chicago Sanegerfest. The picLie will, however, take place July 20, when a grand time is expected. Among the number were Colonel R jbert Harlan, Mr. A. S. Thomas, accom panied bv his esteemable daughter, Miss l Thomas, Miss T. Eaylor, and Messrs. Shed Saunders and George Taylor. A Card. Editor Leader; Arrangements were made last week for tho funeral of my brother, the late Nicholas Kimbrougb, at the New Bethel Baptist Church, on Sunday, June 20. Elder J. R Raynor was engaged to conduct the funera services. The manner in which he did this was very unsatisfactory to the friends and relatives of the deceasod, as well a3 discred itable to the minister himself. In the first placo Elder Raynor remained away from the Church one hour from the appointed time, to the great disappointment ol tho rel atives of the deceasod, the undertaker and the assembled congregation. During this unnecessary delay a collection was taken up by the Rev. Phillips, who stated it was for a very eerious purpose, thereby leaving the impression in the minds of the audience that the money was for the purpose of de fraying the funeral expenses ot deceased which was rot the case. During Elder Raynor a funereal remarks, he slated that my brother told him on his death bed that it was a sourco of deep regret to him that he (my brother) had been so stingy in his con tributions toward the support of tho Church and minister. I don't believe that mv brother ever said that ho was neglectful or derelict in the obligations mentioned. It is the opinion of many who heard these re n arks of the Elder's, that he was simply trying to make a point with his hearers in favor of more liberal contributions. As a brother of the deceased I think that Elder Raynor should have taken some other means to induce more liberal donations from his audience. Johx M. Kimhkougu. TH12 PARK. (vommnaicated.) As intimated by the Leader last week, the opening of the Blackford Street Park last Monday proved the event of the season. It has remained for Elder Manson, a stranger very near in our midst but possessing the necessary business snap, to inaugurate this convenient resort, and just how well he has succeeded, and how much of the approba tion of the community he has obtained can be determined in the fact of the great crowds that have attended the opening of the park from the beginning to the close. The most pleasing feature of the first day's opening was the procession of tho Sunday-school children of the city, led by Bell's cornet band, marching through the principal streets of the city. The sight at the park was certainly a beautiful one, as far as the nappy faces of tho little ones was concerned, while on every table was to bo found the choicest delicacies ot the season. Speeches were made at eveningby lion. J.S. Hinton, Rev. M. Broyles, W. Allison Sweeney, and Lloyd James, Esq. Tuesday night, if possible, there was even more hilarity and pleasure than on the previous evening, it being the last evening of the Hon. R. B. Bagby's sojourn in Indianapolis prior to his departure to Washington, the sence of his future home and labors, advantage was taken of the occasion by his many friends and admirers to say good by, and farewell to him for the last time and to wish him God speed and sunny skies in the future. By request, "W. Allison Sweeney male tho introductory speech to the largo and attentive assemblage, taking occasion in his remarks to dwell in an earnest manner on tho great loss that the people of Indianapolis and the interests of education would suffer in the departure from their midsts, for an indefinite length of time, of so superb a gentleman and so worthy a representative as the Hon. R. P. Bagby. Mr. Bagby himself then ascended the stage, and in x voice full of emotion returned thanks to all old and young, scholar and parent, for the warm and spontaneous
evidence they had given him of the place he had occupied in their hearts and would occupy in their memories in the months and years of separation tttnl might elapse ere they ghould a.eet again, assuiing thm that wherever his foot strps rright wander, or his duties might take him, he should ever con
tinue to hold in tender rerol lection Indian apolis and her citizens, and, that the many ties of friendship formed between them all a the years that are coco sh' -uld not be suf fered to decay. Mr. Bagby spoke for about ten minutes and was visibly affected, his voice at times being completely choked wit h emotion, while many of the scholars, who or vears had come went belore him almost daily, seemed carried away with grief, and regret. After Mc. Bagby had ceased speaking, Mr. Hinton ascended the stage, and in a manly, eloquent appeal consimd Mr. fWt in generou, charitable terms, to the future that awaited him, after which a general hand skaking took place, while the. crowd slowly wended themselves homeward, much pleased with tho night s pleasures and lestivities. POPULAR SCIENCE. The Baden Gewerbe Zeitung gives the following recipe to dye straw hats black: In order to obtain a level color a solution of gluten is added to a lye of soda, which is allowed to stand lor twenty-four hours and filtered. The hats aro then steeped for twelve hours in the clear liquid. The straw is thus freed from grease, and the mordants of nitrate, sulphate or acetate of iron, as well as tho decoction mixed with sumac or galls, is very evenly taken up by the fiber. A slight addition of bicromate of potash improves the tone of the dye, ana the goods are finished with gum or gelatine. Official documents recently issued in Copenhagen show the number of euicides in Denmark, during the ten years, 18ü0-'78, to have been 4,770, or 0,709 males and 1.0G1 females. Of those, it appears, fifty-eight individuals were less than fifteen years of age; L'us between niteen and twenty; o4U between twenty and thirty: Gl 7 between thirty and forty; 1,153 between fifty and sixty; 818 between sixtv and seventy; and 40Ö above soventv. As 'to the mode of death, 2.714 persons hanged themselves, 751 drowned themselves, and the next smaller number resorted to firearms. A remedy for the obiectioDS to the intro ductton of the electric light indoors is pro posed by Mr. Coad in tho shape of a battery for the generation of electricity. This bat tory is worked by a new combination of chemical ingredients not yet published, and the current produced is transmitted directly by wires to the lamps. The resulting flame is stated to be absolutely colorless and of great steadiness and permanence. At a re cent trial a twenty-cell battery was charged, and at intervals ot thirty hours between each exhibition a faultless light of nearly 200 candles was yielded for about a montn without replenishing. Mr. McXicull and Dr. Hilliard report in tho British Medical Journal that they have fonnd puragative results follow the inunc tion of castor oil. The latter savs: I have frequently applied castor oil to the abdomen, under spongiopihne or other waterproof ma terial, in cases where the usual way of ad. ministering by the mouth seemed undesira ble, and with the happiest results. "Within tho last few days, in a case of typhoid fever, I applied half an ounce of castor oil in this manner under a hot-water fomentation, which relieved the constipation and tympanitic distension that had been present with out undue purging or irritation of the bow els." During one of the discussions on the ali mentation and diseases of infants, which now occupv so much attention in France, M. Jules Guerin stated that tho addition of a little charcoal (about half a teaspoonful of BelJuc s or other finely-powdered charcoal) to a nursing-bottle lull of milk, exerts a most remarkably curative effect upon the diarrhea of infants. He has repeatedly seen children who had become exhausted by seven or eight days duration of an obstinate di arrhoa regain all the app?arance of health in two or three days. At the same time that the charcoal is added, the miik should also be diluted with a half or a third o sugared water, the children taking the mixture without any repugnance, and no vom iting being induced. The King of Terror Discounted. II. W. Beocher. There is no use in thinking much about death, for you can not tell how you will die. IN me out ot every ten of you will die in perfect calm, like a snowflake meltiDg in the palm of tho hand. Not more than one person in a million is racked with remorse at death, as wo sometimes read of. That is all flummery. Bad men die just about as good men die. Tnere is very little difference as far as the physical death U con cerned. It is ten thousand times easier to die than to be born. CONKUNG Is a iriiine bird, and will not die in llic lisrht.
