I timeiit.

In consequence, after a slight advance duriiiK the tirt few minutes, when July sold up t Sö-ic prices started on a downward carter. Indifferent cahh-i. lugeworld's shipment?, and an incrcafe of 1.02s.cl bushels in the amount on pafage all were additional bear factors. There was gen, ral coimd-fdon house i-elüng. Many 5top-lo:-i5 ordcis came out en tho way down. One of the influential traders in the pit war. a conspicuous seller. BHAKISH FROM NORTHWEST. News from the- Northwest was extremely bearish. One report stated that all mills at Minneapolis would close down We-dnes-elay on account of a lack of demand for flcur. Although the wheat market here receivcel fair support at times, liquidation was so liberal that prices continued to decline throughout the session. The close was weak, with July at fc4"sc, after selling at S4gc Clearances of wheat and flour were equnl to t;7.200 bu. The visible supply decreased 8CO.0O0 bu. ' Primary receipts were 344.600 bu, against 629,000 bu a year ago. Minneapolis. Duluth and Chicago reported receipts of 162 cars, against 123 cars last week and 367 cars a j'ear ago. CORN FIRM. THEN WEAK. Decreased receipts, with a small percentage of contract grain, held the corn market firm early in the day in spite of weakness in wheat. There was a good demand from pit traders and commission houses, and with light offerings, prices showed a moderate advance. Cables, however, were lower and deliveries on May contracts quite heavy. These influences. In connection with the slump in wheat, finally started a selling movement, which resulted in a de-cline of about a cent from the high point. The weather, also, was against higher prices, being favorable for planting.

The close was weak and near the bottom. July opened a shade to Vpc to 14c lower at 4U'ra4S38c. sold between 4734c and 46?ic, closing at 47g'2 4c. Local receipts were 143 cars, with thirteen of contract grade. Hid DELIVERIES IN MAY OATS. Weakness In wheat, deliveries of about 1,000.0m) bu on May contracts, and favorable weather were influences that brought out liberal liquidation of oats. At times the market received fair support from shorts, but the demand was not sufficient to check the declining tendency. The market closed weak, with prices near the low point.

In the face of the weak grain market and lower prices for hogs, provisions closed firm at a slight advance in all products. A fair demand from pit traders for ribs was the cause for the late firmness, the market ruling easy the greater part of the day in sympathy with grains. July pork clo.eel 5c higher at $12.0212. that the uncertain outcome of these various factors may account in no small part for the halt in the stock market. To-day s market missed the sustaining effects of the recent advancing tendency in London, wheie the exchange was oosed for a holiday, while the more indirect effect of the Paris market was depressing owing to the Russian reverse on the Yalu river The weekly returns showed no decisive improvement in the railroad traffic situation, and the net earnings for March reported continued poor in comparison with last year. The coalers were hurt by rumors, which later were denied, that the attorney general had in contemplation an action against the anthracite combination. The local tractions made sharp reactions from recent speculative advances. Weather news was favorable to crops. The money market was unaffected by the additional gold engagements. The closing tone of the market was easy, and prices were generally near the lowest of the day. The lock-out of the Atchison machinists was an adverse factor, although that stock held better than some other Pacifies. Expressed opinions by trade authorities that urgent European demand for copper was probably satisfied seemed to prompt the selling of Amalgamated Copper. Bonds wero heavy in sympathy with stocks. Meyer & Kiser. NEW YORK. May 2.-Despite the fact that thc stock market during the day was narrow- and wholly professional, there was a distinct reactionarj- tendency and it seemed at times as if the market would break severely on the application of a lititlc more pressure. The best prices of the day were recorded in the first hour and thereafter the tendency was downward. There was a period of strength occasionally, but it was not pronounced or effective. The few really active stocks showed declines averaging more than a point, and in some instanees, notably Metropolitan, the break extended as far s 21 points. There was no news of material importance during the day. The rumor that Attorney General Knox might proceed against the anthracite combination had a depressing effect on the hard coal stocks. Our best information is that the attorney general does not contemplate anything of the kind. More gold was engaged for export to-day and a total of $3.000.000 will leave by to-morrow's steamer. This gold amounts to very little so far as the banks are concerned. There was the slightest possible hardening in call rates to-day. not sufficient, however, to advance the rate higher than 1V4 per cent.

Undoubtedly the weakest stock on the list to-day was Metropolitan. The highest point

of the day was made at the opening and the decline thereafter was steady. It rallied

fractionally before the close. Both Erie and

Reading sold down on the Knox rumor and

evidenced a bad undertone. Union Pacific and Southern Pacific both lacked strength.

A. R. Thompson & Co. NEW YORK. May 2. To-day's market

should be characterized as almost purely professional. There was apparently some real liquidation, but not enough to Influence

serious effects upon prices. The public continues to hold aloof, while there is no improvement to be noted in the general situation, and we believe lower prices are inevitable.

A. W. Thomson. NEW YORK, May 2. The general selling

and heaviness of the market to-day could

only be accounted for by the report from Washington to the press here that the attorney general would investigate the coal combination, which would mean that a repetition of the Northern Securities case could be looked for. The statement was not' official, but it had sufficient weight with many holders of the stocks to cause them to throw many commitments overboard. This led to a general selling movement and attacks were made on Metropolitan Streetrailway stock, which uncovered stop loss orders. Brooklyn Rapid Transit sympathized with Metropolitan. We are hardly of the opinion that the present administration, on the eve of the national election can afford to disturb the financial interests of the country by a repetition of the attack on, the Northern Securities Company. Weather conditions throughout the West favorable outlook in the steel industry and' prospects for good railway earnings, all point to better conditions this coming month. C. F. Branlik & Co. NEW YORK. May 2.-Stock market showed a little more active to-day, with lower prices. Atchison had a strike to contend with, but it will not affect the- transportation only indirectly. Brooklyn Rapid Transit shows Increased earnings and the summer business will be largest in Its history. Tractions were heavy, under influence of Metropolitan, which lost over $2 per share. The gold movement has a sentimental effect, but cuts no figure. Market seems to lack support of big fellows. First Panama Warrant Drnwn. NEW YORK, May 2.-J. P. Morgan received to-day from the State Department at Washington a warrant for $1,000,000, rep

resenting the first installment of the $10,000,000 due to the Panama republic in connection with the canal payment. The warrant, which is payable at the subtreasury, will probably be deposited by Morgan & Co.. and take its regular course through the clearing house. Lehigh Coal and Coke Dividend. PHILADELPHIA. May 2. The board of directors of the Lehigh Coal and Coke Company to-day declared a semi-annual divi

dend of 32 per cent. This places the dividend on the basis of 7 per cent, annually. It was formerly 6 per cent. Edward F. Clark, jr., was elected a director to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Edward W. Clark, sr.
