NEW YORK, Sept. 18. With a material decrease of operations to-day's stock market continued its irregular and downward course, the weakness, however, being confined almost exclusively to the industrial group, which suffered heavy recessions. moments. The heaviness of this stock was reflected in the lossea sustained by Tennessee OOalj Republic Steel, American Car and Pouudrj, Pressed Stiel Car, Sloss-Shef-lield Steel and American Locomotive. Other in the aarae group ruled heavy throughout the day and were vigorously pounded at the close. To this list should be added Crucible Steel preferred, which sold down over twenty points from the last recorded sale, over a year ago. Outwardly there were no Indications that the New York market was at all affected by the split in the British Cabinet. American securities were simply neglected in London, though some selling of Steel common was reported. The general list held well during the first hour on the continuance of buying of certain railway shares, presumably for Western account. There was also some disposition on the part of the traders to cover their short contracts because of a more hopeful view regarding the crop situation. Amalgamated Copper advanced on buying orders, which were said to come from Boston, and the early rise in Sugar was believed to have resulted from the ruling of the Treasury Department regarding bounty-paid sugar imports. Later these stocks went down In the general decline. Arbitrage houses bought moderately of Erie for London, which probably was a seller on balance. The market continued irregulav and became decidedly heavy in the last hour when Steel common touched its low point with resultant weakness to other issues, including the tractions and some .allway shares. The closing was listless ind weak. Although the "Western demand for money has not been so very active in the last few days, indications point to a heavier drain on local cash In the currency movement than was anticipated, the known movement for the week showing a loss of more than $4,50u,u00. Time money hardened slightly today on a further demand to meet year-end loans. There was another advance in foreign exchange, with an active demand for sixty day bills. Gross increases for the closing week of the month were shown by a number of railroads, including Wabash, Canadian Pacific, Norfolk & Western. Missouri, Kansas & Texas and Denver & Rio Grande. The bond market was quiet and Irregular and without any changes of importance. Total sales, at par value, were $1.4ti0,X0. United States 2s advanced 24 per cent. Following are the day's share sales and the recorded price changes:

Sheep Receipts. 700; shipment. 4W. Thus far this wwk the receipts of sheep and lambs have l- n i;nrly literal, showing a gain of 5ft over the same time last week and 1,500 over the corresponding time a year ago. The market opened with practically all regular buyers in the field. and. with fair competition between shippers and local butchers, the tisding was reasonably active and the offerings were salable at fully steady prices compared with yesterday. It is possible that the quality in some cases to-day was a little better than yesterday, and on that account sales at higher prices were reported, but in no instance were they any higher than Wednesday. A good clearance was made in good season and the market closed steady at opening prices. I-ambs sold as hich as $5.75. quite a number reported at $5.255.50 and others at $3.50 I. A few yearling sheep sold as high as $4, but the highest price reported for on sheep was ?3.:r.. and other sales ranged from $2.50 to $3.25. Quotations:

UNION STOCKYARDS INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 18. Cattle Receipts. 1.000; shipments. 300. Combined receipts of cattle for five days show a decrease of 200 compared with the Fame time la?t week and an increase of over 1,100 compared with th corresponding time a year ago. The receipts to-day were smaller than they have been for three days and only about half

as large as a week agd, but 400 larger than a year ago. A very large percentage of the cattle marketed this week have been on the common to medium order, and strictly thick, fat kinds of good quality have been scarce enough to allow very little change in prices. Occasionally, however, such kinds ha e sold lower. Common to medium stock, oh account of the plentiful supply, have moved very slowly, and the fair to medium grades especially have lost about 25c iu prices during the week. There was quite a scarcity of choice stock to-day, and any that were wtll up to the reaahwaNBhl of butchers told at fully steady prices OSSSsaTSd with yesterday, but were not quotably higher. Medium cattla, h-jwever, did not show any more strength, but. on account ot the scarcity of choice kinds, there was probably a greater outlet, for the pretty decent cattle. Tho demand for stocktrs ut.U feeder was very fair, but buyers were wanting good quality, and there was not much of this represented, and a good many caitle on the stocker and tteder order were left unsold. CHICAGO, Sept. 18. Wheat ruled decidedly weak, December closing at a loss of V4H tjgC, Corn was lower. December being oft QaA but closed steady. December oats showod a loss of tc, with provisions irregular and from 2Vc lower to 12c higher. The decline in corn, exceptionally hue weather Northwest, weaker cables and lack of export demand sent wheat values down, with but little to support them. Iong wheat came out in large quantities early, and selling orders were in the market throughout the session. December, starting at 8110 to Slc WC to below strday's close finished at the bottom fcOe with a net loss of Vaöl'V- There was some buying by St. Louis houses, but not enough to cause a rally. The weakness ot the Northwestern markets influenced considerable selling, and foreign advices were bearish. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 462,100 bu, with primary receipts 1.067,100 bu, against 1.336.900 bu last year. Minneapolis and Duluth reported receipts of 717 cars, which, with local receipts of cars 2 of contract grade made a total of 7i9 cars, against SO" last week and 1.0S9 a I i r ago. Predictions of fair and warmer weather in the corn belt caused an additional break in prices, notwithstanding the frosts is sev

eral States this morning. On reports that the crop had not suffered to any great extent there was a rush of selling orders early, and considerable loss was scored before the decline v;is checked by good buym m. . . a aa i
