"0t away day" was observed yesterday ait the camp of instruction of the Indiana National Guard at the fair grounds. The breaking of camp after eight days of hard work for the soldiers found many of the latter working hard in their efforts to prepare for home. From the time the soldiers were called from their large ticks of straw yesterday morning a lively sceue was enacted by the men in tearing loose their beds and burning the old straw. Blankets were piled in large heaps. Ticks were taken to the rear of the ground, where the straw was piled in one great mass. The whole was then burned. From the south to the north of the big grounds clouds of heavy smoke made their way through the

company streets. While at mess the smoku I

curled its way through the tents but the soldi ra paid no attention to it. Good natu red badinage wu indulged in by the boys. The bed clothing was turned over to the quartermaster. With It all the tools that would not likely be needed were stored away, wherever practical the different companies arranged their tents in such a way that when the call would come from headquarters for the immediate razing of the tnts It could be done In a short time. Stakes were pulled at 9:90 o'clock. This made the matter of taking down the tents much easier. Aside from the work of storing away ell the equipment the soldiers were given th ir guard mount and battalion drills the same as last week. While all the men seemed Er aller yesterday morning many expressed annoyance ut having to walk to Indianapolis after the breaking of camp. Th sun caused this anxiety. The morning broke clear and warm. The weather continued the same until after the noon mess. Clouds then tilled the sky and a stiff, cool breeze was blowirg WAITING FOR THE CALL. When ihm call irom headquarters sounded after mess it found the young militiamen waiting fur it. No company proved a laggard. Seemingly in almost the twinkling of an eye the city of tents became almost a desert. Huge wagons commanded by officers on horseback were driven hurriedly through the company streets gathering up the former homes of the soldier . The parade was theu formed for the march homeward. It was close to 1:30 o'clock before the strains of the regimental bands told tht the march to th city had begun. Slowly the troops riled down the main street to Thirty-eighth stritt, west to Meridian street and south to the city. The parade wgs made up of three regiments of infantrymen, the artillery battalion and the hospital corps The infantry took up the lead, followed by the artillery. It was shortly after 3 o'clock before the troops were sighted coming around Monument place. Already thousands of admiring friends ot the soldiers were in waiting on the sides of the streets. The troops filed slowly across Washington street south to the Union Station. All were covered with dust and looked as though they had Just returned from a long season of active campaigning. The admiring crowds which lined the streets cheered the laughing soldiers, who were glad they were soon to get some rest. Many of the troops left the city for their homes on the early afternoon trains. Others were forced to remain until the late trains last night For the first time in a week the soldiers ran about the streets with freedom and were not keeping their eyes closely "peeled" for the provost guard. Governor Durbin, Genera! McKee and all the officers of the guard expressed deep satisfaction with the week of soldiering.

CITY NEWS NOTES. Evan F. Lilly, who has been at Snow Island, near Marklnac. returned last Saturday. He Is suffering from a nervous attack and was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital for a rest. He has been in ill health forVme time under the care of Dr. Henry Jameson. Henrietta Smith, the sixteen-year-old colored 'girl whose mother called in several ministers last week who attempted to baptiae the girl in a bath tub, died Sunday night at her home, 73l West Eleventh street. The girl was afflicted with a strange disease that affected every muscle in her body. Former residents of Dearborn county will hold their annual reunion on Sunday, Aug. , at the grounds of John Roach, 4900 East Washington street. The reunion is in the nature of a basket meeting, and it ia expected that a number of the old "Missouri Hirmony" singers will be preaent and add to the pleasure of the day. It is expected that Governor Durbin. who is entitled to membership in the organization, will be present. About three hundred are expected to be present. A company of louaves. under the direction of Captain Fox. began their two weeks' encampment at Broad Ripple yesterday. The company Is made up of former members of the W. E. Knglish souaves and Indianapolis Zouave Cadets, who were unable to accompany the former organization on their tours. Mr. Fox has had a great deal of experience in military organisation and hopes to make this company the best he has ever drilled. Engagements have already been made and the company will tour the country as soon as it is sufficiently drilled. A foreign tour through England. Germany and France Is also contemplated. J. D. Forrest, professor of sociology and sconomlcs at Butler College, returned ssterday from a horseback trip through outhwrn Indiana and Kentucky. He was accompanied by his wife and Mrs. Cornelia Allen. Ths bluegrass regions of Kentucky as wall as the mountainous districts were visited. A close study of the Kentuckian of the mountains waa made by Prof. Forrest, with a view of using that specimen of man In his college work He was in Jackson and other towns which are identified with the desperate mountain fueds and saw many of the participants in the Jett-White trial. Patrick Moran. 721 Wmw Pearl strt. was arrested yesterday afternoon by Detective Asch and Manning and Patrolman Fickel. and slated at the police station for assault and battery with intent to kill. Kain Fell In Torrents at Fair Hank, but Failed tu Dampen Enthasiasiu of Music Lovers.

The threatening clouds of the early evening did not keep amusement seekers away from Fair Bank last night, and by the time the storm had broken the pretty park contained a good-sized crowd. In the midst of the first part of the programme the rain began to fall in torrents and the refreshment tables and cozy little nooks under the trees were soon deserted in favor of the big covered pavilion in front of the band stand. In a few moments the pavilion was completely filled with people and here, entirely sheltered from the downpour, the audience enjoyed one of the very best concerts given at Fair Bank this summer. Eugene Cowles, the favorite basso, and Madame Carrie Rothschild Saplnsky, a contralto new to Indianapolis, were the bright particular stars of the excellent programme. Despite the inclement weather Mr. Cowles was never in better voice, and it seemed as if the audience could not get enough of his singing. His voice is one of the most satisfactory bassos to be heard on the concert or operatic stage, leaving scarcely anything to be desired. It Is of great power, has wonderful carrying quality and exactness of pitch at all times, and, added to all this, his enunciation is wellnigh perfect. As many times as he has been heard in Indianapolis, his reappearance is always heartily welcomed, and most deservedly so. He was down on the programme for three numbers, but was compelled to aing twice that many. He rendered the popular "Song of the Stein:" the tuneful serenade. "My Little Gypsy Maid." from the opera of "The Fortune Teller;" the always beautiful "Annie Laurie;" his first and greatest success, "The Armorer s Song," from "Robin Hood." and, in conclusion, Schumann's "Two Grenadiers." M.tdame Saplnsky proved to be an artist with a true contralto voice, dramatic rather than lyric in quality, but distinctive in its richness and purity of tone. II trained, fresh and clear, her voice was a charming feature of the programme. She sang as her first ofTer'ng' Vardlot's swwt love song, "All for You," and upon scoring a strong success with this gave three other numbers very impressively, the songs being Bizet's "Carmen." from the opera of that name; Ethelbert Nevin's little negro gem, "Mighty Lak' a Rose." and the musical setting to James Whitcomb Riley's "Song of Nature." The instrumental portion of the concert was much enjoyed, all of the band selections being well chosen. Thomas H. King, the trombone player, was the instrumental soloist. He performed with fine effect the ""Whirlwind Polka." by Levy, and Bohm's sweet ballad, "Calm as the Night." All of the concerts at Fair Bank this week promise to be even more artistic than u.Mial. Jesse W. Tlnsley Loses S 13Ä in Money from His TrunkHawkins Makes Denial.

Walter G. Hawkins. 30 North Pine street, was arrested yesterday afternoon by Detectives Kinney and Kurts, and ilated at the police station cn a charge of grand larceny preferred by his former roommate. Jesse V. Tinsley. who claims that Hawkins stole fl35 out of his trunk. Tinsley and Hawkins have, been rooming together for some time, and a few days ago moved to new quarters at 306 North New Jersey street. Tlnsley left his trunk key In the trunk, he said, and on returning home in the evening found the money, which he had placed in a cigar box in the bottom of the trunk, gone. He at once told Hawkins of his loss, and was advised by that gentlt-man to report the matter to the detectives, which he did. Detectives Kinney and Kurtz were detailed on the casev and on investigation found that Hawkins. In company with several of his friends, bad been in the room during the afternoon, and Hawkins opened the trunk and exhibited Tinsley's money to his companions, stating that he was a fool to go away and leave the trunk untcoke.l when it contained so much money, but he did not turn the key In the lock. He then went out with his friends, but later returned alone, staying in the room but a short time, and after that the money was missed. Hawkins denied the theft yfsterday. but in the opinion of the detectives he is guilty, and thty b. litn that they will be able to prove conclusively that he stole the money, at the trial in the Police Court this morning. He has been employed as a shipping clerk at the Parrott A Taggart bakery for some time, and has born a fairly good reputation. THREE CRYING GIRLS.

Held for a While at Police Station for Pilfering; Potatoes. For stealing cabbages and potatoes from the stalls on Commission row three crying girls wera placed in charge of the police matron last evening, but they were released when called tor by their parents. The girls are the daughters of Isaac Rosenberg, a recent arrival In thit. city from .V BJ York, and he was told when he went to the police station last night for his girls that they would have to stop pilfering potatoes, or they ould be taken before Judge !ibbs. of the Juvenil Court. ASSESSMENT OF CORPORATIONS MADE BY THE STATE TAX BOARD

The State Board of Tax Commissioners yesterday gave out the figures for the IM assessment of steam railroads, electric railroads, telephone, telegraph, sleeping cars, transportation, express and pipe-line companies. The valuation of the steam railroad property has been int. reasM 52. ."Co Representatives of most of the important roads in evi-ry part of the State were before tho board to have their assessments reduced. The valuation of the electric railroads has been increased $2.374.450. more than S2.oOO.OoO of which is on main track. The assessed valuation of the property of the telephone companies has been increased Jl,775,73. A large part of the increase is due to the large number of new companies that were organized and started business during the past year. The total valuation of telephone tympanies this year is placed at $.$iy.5a2. The total increase on the assessed valuation of the steam and electric railroads and telephone companies is 16,674,006. The valuation of the telegraph, express, sleeping car, transportation and pipe-line companies is decreased a total of $1,233,169. The largest reductions were made on the property of the pipe-line and telegraph companies, whose property is now valued at more than $1.000.000 less than the assessed valuation last year. The reduction on the valuation of the property of the express, sleeping car and transportation companies was comparatively small. The main cause for the reduction of the valuation of the pipe-line property is the reduced mileage.
