On account of the small attendance the lecture of Rev. W. A. Robertson on "The Wit, Pathos and Humor of Travel.' was postponed until evening. The Blayton jubilee singers announced to give a concert last night did not arrive, being detained in Chicago. Trny will arrive this morning and give- a sacred concert to-night and also sing at the meetings to-day. Tals will be the first Sunday of the assembly and a large attendance is expectd. Joseph Sutherland, marshal of Acton Park, while working was overcome by the heat and is ill at his horns on the grounds. Hs was in an unconscious condition Friday but waa somewhat improved yesterday. A physician from Acton is attending him. Mr. Sutherland suffered a sunstroke a number of years ago and has not been in the best of Health si; cc. a - CHILDKEN'S DAY AT BETHANY. Largest Attendance Ever Known There To-Day'n Programme. Special to the Indianapolis Journal. BETHANY PARK, July &. Children's day was observed at the Park to-day with the largest attendance ever known, although It has always been oue of Bethany's special day 3. People began to come early in the morning, aud by 10 o'clock the grounds were thnmged with people who came In carriages, on the interurban cars and by railway. Children a'ere in evidence everywhere and it was very plain to be seen that they intended to make the must of 4he one day that is given especially to them. At the hour for the exercises to begin the tabernacle was libed to overflowing, aud many people were n.snding just oiit-ide of the window trying i to hear the address of the muruiuy. The Monrovia school, which was to have given the entertainment of the morning, was detained by their wagon breaking down several miles below the Park, and us the other schools were not prepared for this morning, an impromptu programme was given. T. J. Legg presided over th meeting, with the Rev. Lee Tinsley, of Mt. Carmel. 111., leader of the singing and Miss Nellie Murray, of Mt. Csrrael. 111., at the piano. Col. Ü. S. Reed, of Spencer, gave an interesting talk for the children, compannK the Sunday school to a grand army, sixteen million strong, keeping step to the same Sunday school music, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Dr. L. L. Carpenter then railed all the children under fourteen years of age to exchange seats with the older people, and come to the front. A large number of children responded, and Dr. Carpentet then conducted a service, cousisting largely of Bible questioning, that was helpful to children both large and small. Dr. Carpenter seems to know the way to the hearts of the children, and after taking a vote to see how many of them had tongues, and then going through with a hearty handshaking in psntomine.- h proceeded to ask questions which the children answered e igerly and intelligently. At the close of This exercise the Plainlicld Boys' Glee Club took the platform and gave three beautiful m U, tions, which, were highly appreciated by the audience. At 2 o'clock occurred the christening of the new steam launch on Lake Jewel. The Party who went out in the launch consisted a Dr. tarpentr and wife, Samuel Harris and wife. Mr Oeorge Hoke and little Mary Josephine Hke. who had the honor of breaking the bottle that christened the boat. This bottle, a Dr. Carpenter explained in his speech, did not contain any intoxicating liquor, but wo:- piled with the pure, healthgiving mineral water or Bethany Park. After the christening" little Mlsa Mary threw kisses toward the targe assemblage uion the banks of the lake. The little one is the granddaughter of Dr. Carpenter, and i. the pet of the Park. After the christening "The M am ' brought her pa.-caeiigers to the landing, and the crowds of people proceeded to the tabernacle and the exercises of the afternoon were given. Songs, recitations and drills made up the interesting programme. The school from Monrovia next took the stage and gave a VCfa enjoyable programme. Tl s programme fy the evening consisted of a cantata by the Plainfleld Boys" Ckv Club, entitled "The Jolly Farmer," which was well rendered. The cantata was In four scenes and consumed about an hour and a half of the evening. Iu the first scene T. - it - - - - . a farmer xiainaway anu nts neignoors commented on the beauties of the day and were assisted by a full chorus, lu the second scene the chambermaid awakens Mr. Hathaway's son, who is very sleepy and hard to arouse, in the third scene the Hathaway family were all seated at the breakfast table, where they sang several fr'-ngs, after which they proceeded with the regular routine of farm work, and in the fourth and last scene the neighbors all meet at the Hathaway farmhouse and hold a ral country social. Twenty-six boys cams over from Plainfield to participate in the entertainment, a-ul they were given a hearty welcome by the Bet Many people. To-morrow, being the first assembly da v. will probably be a grand day for Bethany, as the first Sunday is usually the day for a large crowd. A model Sunday school will be conduc ted by T. J. Iegg. stab' uaday-aohool evangelist. This will be followed by a sermon at 1" :: o'clock by the Rev. Oliver V. Stewart, of Chicago. Another sermon will be delivered at 2: by B. M. Blount, and following this will come the observance of the lord's supper with D K. Lucas and J. T. Freed presiding. The prayer ?nd praise service of the eveni..g will b- followed by a sermon by O. S. Reed, of Speucer. Monday, or Temperance dg, as it' is known on the Bethany calendar, will be a full day. with a tmrranc conference and temperance addresses by Oliver W. Stewart, of Chicago, chairman of the national Prohibition committee, and Mrs Frances imp, of Lexington. Ky, president n the Stat- W. C. T. I. Music will be furuished throughout the day by five good solo singers aud a male quartet. The evening entertaiument will be a goid-mcda! contest. The nrst of the week will be given to the Christian Woman's Board of Missions convention, and following this comes the state Sunday-school convention, but the conventions for this year are so interspersed with good lectures and entertainments that they will prove tiresome even to those uulntercsted in convention work. FOUND WIFE DEAD. Mrs. Carrie Saas;" Succumbed to Heart Disease in Hualiand's Absence. Mrs. Carrie Suggs, colored, 226 Lincoln street, fell dead from heart disease while attending to her household duties yesterday aficrnaon, and her death was not discovered until her husband returned home from -rk last night. He called Dr. Johnson, of the City Dlapeoaary, and imnl'-nd him t-i bring his wife bark to life. The doctor said the woman had been dead several hours before his arrival. ' i The commission that has been vainly trying to decide on a site for the Girls' Industrial School held another meeting yesterday evening with Governor Durbin. Up to this time nothing definite has been agreed on in the way of n location. The commission has three sites under consideration and hopes within the next week to select one of them. One is situated near Zionsville, Boone county, another is the Miller place, about seven miles from the city, on the Crawfordsville road, and a third is what is known as the Hobbs site, west of the city. The latter site comprises about eighty acrei and the owners are asking that the commission pay $l",u am acre for it. Members of the commission declare that if this site is selected the price will have to bo materially reduced. There are eighty-seven and a half acres in the Miller property and the price asked is Sao an acre. The Zionsville site contains 160 acres and the price asked is S100 an acre. One of the problems which IsTpuaslIng the hoard is whether to buy 80 or J60 acres. Some of the members think one of these eighty-acre tracts will be large enough. However. It is admitted that if It is the intention to give the girls who will be inmates of the school an idea of the farm and teach them to work in the dairy It will be necessary to have more land. The board has decided that there are a number of fea tures to be taken into consideration, and, gj none of the members: is experienced in matters of thi kind, an arrangement has been made to bring to the city a man who U uti expert in cute charitable work and place him In possession of all the details of the situation. When the commission adjourned yesterday evening it was the understanding that this would be done. It was announced that no site would be selected until the commission has expert" opinion on the question. THE ELKS ARE RETURNING BKIXtf BACK STORIES' OF BALTIMORE'S HOSPITALITY. Joseph T. 1'nnning Honored by the Marylanders The Great Crab Feast aa Event. Joseph T Fanning's crowd of loyal Elks. who left the city last Sunday morning to attend the Elk.-' cunvuiitlun at Baltimore, are returning in mall parties with great praise of the reception tendered them in the convention city. A number of the Elks came in Friday and a small party arrived yesterday; most of them are expected today and to-niorrovv. Many of them took advantage of the opportunity to visit various relatives and cities in the Fast. In all, 102 Elks of the Indianapolis lodge, left on the special train to the convention. They were received with an overwhelming ovation when their train pulled Into the Baltimore depot. From the moment Joseph T. Fanning set foot on Maryland oil he was the most prominent and popular man in the eity. The fact that he was unanimously elected grand exalted ruler indicates his position pmong tho Elks, and every one agreed that he is all his position indicates a leader of the Flks. Those who have returned from Baltimore say that the electrical display ; and decorations Bleu Ix-yond anything that they had ever seen. The city of Baltimore ha- a it st rved fun amounting to $50.000, especially for celebrations and conventions, and lr this occasion neither expense nor labor was spared. Monday the Llks, en Basse, visited the AjMtipoIla navy yards, making the trip by boat. Although they were caught in a severe thunderstorm while on the bay, the incident only udded spice to their experiences. The parade was another fci -at t'.tture of ihe conwntion. It was headed by the Marine Bund ol Washington, with Grand Exalted Ruler Funning, who had been elec ted the pr. ceding day. rifling at its iront. There were ninety Klks in the In dianapolis contingent. It was ltd by Mayor Bookwalter and Joseph E. Bell, enemies In politics, but brothers at heart. Incidentally, these two politicians roomed together during tneli stay Ju the ouster City, which fact furnished some good material for the political columns of the Baltimore papers. But the event that stands out foremost in the memories of the Elks is the clam least Thursday, held on the beach of Chesapeake bay, at Toll Chester, about fort miles below Baltimore: it was estimated that over S.Ooo people attended the feast. A party of the Indianapolis retinue chartered two small launches. one of which broke down at the half-way mark and did not arrive until late in the day. The boats went down at ! o'clock in the morning and 2 o'clock in the afternoon. At Toll Chester a bountiful menu and an Informal entertainment awaited them. Along. the white beach stretch-1 a chain of black k Urs hung over la cs Horn tripod frames. The chain stretched for half a mile, and at each kettl wa5 a black mammy, with a reel handkerchief tied mound her head and stirring and mixing the eUun soup. A railir was built before tl; m. and up to this the thousands of Elks pressed and were given bowels of good c lam soup, made in the pood old Southern style. Thi- was only a part of the menu; the n was something like tin.-: 50.000 crabs. 400 pounds of crab meat. The convention wh declared by all to have been the best ever held by the lodge. The Indianapolis members were shown special attention cm account of Joseph T. Brighter prospects are in store fr the coming week, according to a number of the East Market-street brokers. The dullness hist week was due partly to the natural slump that comes on the market nearly . rv year at this time, and partly to the fact that many of the largest brokers and a large number of citisens were busy with political affairs, incident to the Democratic convention. This latter factor against activity in real estate will subside tor a time npw, and it is thought the coming weeks will see a better business. The transfers last week were swollen to a very large total by the deeds of property at the corner of Illinois and Market streets, recently bought by the Indianapolis Terminal & Traction Company, being recorded Friday. These transfers represented something like $500,000. Most of the other transfers last week were email. The mortgages recorded last week amounted to $106,öt;i. Building permits for the week amounted to nearly $66,000. This is an increase of something like $20,000 over the permits issued the pervious week. The largest building for which a permit was taken out last week la the new six-story brfck structure In in constructed by Fahnley & McC'rea. on Louisiana street, between Illinois and Meridian street8. This building will cost about $37.000. The work of remdVing the old building is now in progress. TERMINAL STATION. The wreckers are making fast work ot tbe old buildings at Illinois and Market streets whers the new terminal station will be built. In one week the wreckers have torn down all the buildings 'facing Illinois street,, from Market street to the alley, and excavationa for the basement of the new nine-story structure are in progress. The Indianapolis Terminal & Transfer Company is very anxious to get the construction of the new building under way, and the contractors clearing the site are instructed to make as rapid progress as possiDie. it cannot he told yet Just when the first work on the building will be begun. The noticeable activity in real estate the past week was in West Indianapolis and Columbia Place. A good many small building lots and small houses and lots wege sold in West Indianapolis, and the building lots in Columbia Place, which is located north of the city on the car line to Falrview Park, continue a good sale. These lots are being offered at $250 and $300 and the New York capitalists who have the addition say they are having no trouble in disposing of them. The continued activity of West Indianapolis property is the result of the new factories and industrial enterprises being located there. One thing that indicates that the real estate market is not liable to remain as dull as last week is the fact that there was considoable inquiry for good classes of property irf all parts of the city all week. This is always a good indication. LARGE DEAL ON WEBT SIDE. An East Market-streot firm has in progress a deal by which a number of pastern investors will likely become the owners of a large tract of high-class land along the western line of the corporation limits. The purchase of this property will involve a very large expenditure, and if the deal goes through it will be one of the largest ot tho kind this year. If the Eastern capitalists succeed in getting the property at the right terms they will plat it and sell the lots at a reasonable figure. By a recent act of the General Assembly the city hae authority over all land within a mile of the city limits when it is bought up for additions to be platted and sold iu ordlnarys'.zi d building lots. LOW STOCKS. Several of the representative brokers are looking for the increased dullness of the stock market to have a tendenc y to inc rease the activity of the Indianapolis real estate market within a month or two. and they think tins factor will certainly be seen plainly later in the fall, when it is time for the real estate business to become active without the assistance of outside influence. Stocks continue to drop lower and lower very week, and at the end of each month ihe owners see that their investments are becoming less and less profitable the longer they hold them. Many people who ordinarily have several good-sized blocks of railroad stocks have unloaded these investments, and the continued breaks In stocks are causing more and more Investors to take this action all the time. When people take their money out of stocks the large majority of them usually seek real estate investments. And many brokers sav they see this condition ahead of the Indianapolis market. the State military service. This is a recent ordor of Adjutant Oneral Ward, and growout of the recent trouble at Danville, Ind., when an order was issued for the company there to go to Evansville. and it was found necessary to arrest Harry Hall, a rural mail carrier who was a member of the guard, in order to impress him into service. He failed to carry his route that day and complaint being made to the federal authorities, the occurrence resulted in Hall receiving an honorable discharge from his cumpanv. Hereafter no federal employe who is a member of the militia will be required to give up his work to do military service. Death of He. W. V. Toiler. Dr. W. V. Tolley died yesterday at the pesthouse. where he has been confined with the smallpox for some time. It had been known for some time that Dr. Tolley was fatally ill, and for that reason the, injunction suit against the city to compel it to destroy the pc stliouse buildings has W n delaved. Dr. ToIIey's death leaves the pesthouse vacant, and the suit will be filed tomorrow, it is said.
