REAL ESTATE IN MARCH
GRATIFYING Dt'SIXCSS DOXE DUIUXG Tlin PAST 3IOSTII. Ilecent IMeasant Weather IIa Cnnted Lnusonl Activity Van Camp CompanyStock All Sold. During the month of March more real estate was transferred In Marlon county than In any similar month of the three years of the present century. In March, 1300, the real estate transferred amounted to $1,125,672, In March, 1S01, to tt.l06.i32. and In March of the present year property to the value of J1.561.43S was eold in the county. Much of the property sold was in large tracts, and during the month several large deals were completed that were not recorded, as the publication of the purchases was not thought advisable at the. time. . In addition to the large sales of realty" the usual number of small dwelling-house sales were . recorded. . - The pleasant weather of the . last two weeks öf March and the beginning of April gave an Impetus to the real-estate business and few of the real-estate agents had cause to complain. The agents were busy with horses and buggies and trolley cars in showing home-hunters over the city in earch of desirable property. Some lots were sold, but not many. The old additions that were platted last year are as fortunate as the new plots in tsales and the chief requisites for the sale of property seems to be the proximity to a street-car line and the price of the property offered for sale. o ritCFEIUtED STOCK ALL SOLD. Sale of Issue of 0O,000 of the Van Camp Hardware Company. Two weeks ago the Central Trust Company and J. F. Wild & Co. announced that they had purchased the total Issue of the 00,000 of preferred stock of the Van Camp Hardware Company and would soon place it on the market for public subscription. Already ail of the stock has been sold to a few subscribers at $105. The stock was all subscribed by Indianapolis people as an investment and the readiness with which the Investment was made as soon as the opportunity was announced was satisfying to the hardware dealers.. The bankers who managed the sale of the stock are gratified at the .response received to the offer and take it as an indication of the soundness of the Van Camp Hardware Company and the trust reposed In themselves as conservative dealers In securities. The perfection of telephone etiquette has fceen reached. A certain distinguished for eisner who haa a thriving professional busi- . nese in New Tork ala possesses certain qualification wmcn eive nim the entree Into fashionable society, and he la busy ; with these pleasant duties after 4 o'clock ach day. But. of course, he sometimes rst?oadf to telephone calls, and It has been
his Invariable habit to carefully exchange his office coat for the black cutaway which he wears on the street before going to the telephone box. . . lid has recently become enamored of a charming .widow, and his telephone calls have been more frequent of late. His office associates have observed that he combs his beard and mustache with some care before commencing his conversation over the .'phone, and they have come to the conclusion that their handsome chief has reached the acme of politeness in his intercourse .with the gentler sex, even if it is by wire. SIIEHLOCK O.N THIS HIGH SEAS.
A Xevr Adventure Chronicled by a Cambridge Dr. Watson. Harvard Lampoon. "Histl" said the rirate Chief; and every pirate hissed, r'ar, far down in the hold was heard the tremulous moan of a captive damsel. Things had come to such a pass as follows: The long. low. black, rakish-looking craft lay In the oiling, marned by her swarthy pirate crew, and her scuppers ran with gore. In which the pirates washed their nands . whenever they thought ' they needed it. For the notorious Mary . Ann was not the romantic pirate- cratt of nursery tiction, but the pitiless and cruel sea marauder of uncompromising fact. She Hew the Jolly Hoger at her masthead, and 'she was armed to the teeth. Her captain. , a dastardly Spaniard (whose long black' hair had given rUe to our expression, "The Spanish. jNlane";, was also urmed to the teeth,.' of v which he had thirty-lght, each one loaded with the gold of captured galleons. This unique fact has given rise to that other modern expression, "loaded to the muzzle." Ills swarthy and de&uerate crew was never far behind ' him in this respect. Hut now to the fair captive and her moan. Far, far down In the hold (as we have said) she lay, smoking strong' shag tobacco in her trusty briar and tremulously moaning at intervals. Her features were tem porarily obscured by a tilted tein, but a tell-tale hypodermic needle was sticking carelessly in her torearm, and the Hound of the Uaskervillfcs lay phosphorescently at her feet, and licked her hand whenever be thought it need but enough! You have doubtless already pierced the maid's disguise, and perceived that the villainous dastards on the upper deck will have to deal with the rcdouotable Sherlock Holmes himself. Misguided men! They, were about to raffle for her, little knowing that she had purposely contrived her capture for their destruction. ; . So how we are again at our starting point,' for after the Pirate Chief had remarked "llis.t!" oh hearing the tremulous moani. . . ' . i . . I . .1 whicn we have already mentioned he sent two of his cutthroat minions to bring the moaner on deck for raffling purposes. . ., She came, and there was something queenly in her regal gait.' Even the hardened members of the Criminal Crub, who composed that desperate crew, were awed to silence by the dazzling beauty of her girlish Innocence. In fact, Sherlock's disguise was a peach (to use a Chimmle Faddenlsm)', iarid'she had the whole push on a string. At last she raised her delicate white hand and spoke. "Gentlemen, she asked,. In accents low and deceitful .Vam 1 Indeed to be raffled for?" "Madame, you are," replied the pirate captain, stilling a Charles ltiver dam with courtly politeness, "and I trust that you will lall to my lot aa a blushing bride. Sherlock sighed. Ala3!" she said, with tears in her voice, "I am not worthy. 1 am poor and disguised 1 mean despised and can bring you no1 lit dowry, save my youthful face. But stay! 1 last heard of Capt. Kidd?" "We have," said the cutthroats. i. Sherlock drew a wrinkled chart from her bosom. "Then look," she said. "Here Is the map of the location of his buried treasure. Upon yon tender Island fringed with green lies hid a, fortune for each man oX you.. That is my dowry." The marauders of the sea all cheered. and urged her to read them the cipher of the chart. Lack of epace prevents its unabridged reproduction in these columns, but we will quote enough to show that pirates are simple folk, and were as children in the hands of guily, wily Sherlock and his machinations. Ihus ran the chart: "Toe linde ye munney I hav berried goe toe ye first tre u see & clime itt until! u are verry tired. Then looke around u In ye learey foliage & it u doe not linde a needle ltt is not y r faulte, for itt is ye wrong' tre. Butte doe not be discurridged. Keepe coole, & when ye seconde winde comes to u clime ye right tre. nnde ye needel & holde itt in ye right hande, lookeing carefuilie atte ye grounde through ye leite eye of ye needl. Were .y r glauce :strykes Is ye treasure. Digge twentle feete down for ye sake of ye exercise, then fill uppe ye excavation & aigge sum more, u . canne Keepe .wot u canne finde. Y'rs with a flexion. "CAPTAIN KIDD." ;When Sherlock had finished the, pirates were overjoyed. It . seemed to them just as easy as finding money.' "Go, friends," said she dramatically, "and return laden with my dowry to claim mo as your bride -. . ' So the whole crew of twenty-seven mur derers' piled into the jolly boat and pulled for the shore. They did not know that she was Kidding" them. As soon as Sherlock was left alone on the Mary Ann he rushed to the masthead and waved her apron twice out into the stilly, starry night. This was a signal. Then she pulled the Hound of the Baskervllles tail till he barked hoarsely. This was another signal. Anon,- a revenue cutter slrpped abreast the doomed Alary Ann and in a trice Sherlock was In Dr. Watson's arms and the officers of Scotland Yard swarmed over the pirate craft. "This is magnificent. Holmes!" cried the doctor. "We have their ship and they are at our mercy on yonder island climbing banyan trees. And all was accomplished by your superhuman guile. "Why, you will bo famous! "Tut, tut, my dear "Watson," said Sher lock sadly, passing his hand over her peachblow complexion, "you Kngw better than that, for this isn t the first time we ve aided Scotland Yard together. I do all the work. but who gets tne credit7 inspector Cram, or course, or tn yard." COM310.-Si:.SE TRAIM.NG. How a Doffalo Police Captain Sub dued a Bad Horse. Buffalo Enquirer. While discoursing on various subjects in Police Conrt and awaiting the arrival of Judge Murphy, the other day Captain Re gan, of the .Eighth urectnet of Huffalo. amused his hearers by tales of police captures and other interesting subjects. Hefore the conversation had gone very far the subject turned to horses and their values. Captain Kegan is thoroughly versed on the subject of horses. - He understands a horse from the ground up. and it Is - a mighty big horse that can conquer the. mighty son or .Erin s isle. The athletic captain can handle the most erratic horse as easily as though it were a ping-pong Dai i. In the course of the conversation the In formation leaked out that the captain once owned a horse whom tne neighbors dubbed Beelzebub. From the nature of the name one would believe that the horse had a fiery nature, but ne was as docile as a-lamb. The horse did not remain In the possession or the captain very long because his stay ing qualities attracted the attention of a man who doted on quiet horses. Captain Regan's horse would remain In one snot all day without moving if some one didn't take htm away. This characteristic resulted in the purchase of the horse, and Captain Regan bought a successor. - ' The temper of the second horse was Just the reverse of that of Beelzebub. The horse was tne most stutusn animal tnat ever gnawed a halter roie. He absolutely re fused to become reconciled to city life. He shied at trolley cars. Jumped when he heard steam whistles, bolted at automobiles, and calked whenever he felt like It. It required much time and trouble to train the horse to city environments. Night after night Captain Regan could be st-en taking the horse to Niagara street to ac custom him to the trolley cars. He finally hit upon a plan to tame the animal. He deviated from the usual course. Purchas ing a heavy halter, the captain led the ani mal to Niagara street. It was then a nar row thoroushfare and th trnllpv rnn ln to tne euro, iiour niter nour the caDtaln sat down and watched the horse tied to a post and shylnjr at trolley cars. The brute Jumped up in the air when a car passed. but In the course of a few weeks the horse was no longer afraid of a trolley. Although the horse no longer feared trolleys he was the same spirited animal. He could travel fast. Over a country road he was like a streak of llchtnlnfr. The Deed of-Cresceus could not be compared to the trotting of the new horse. Captain Regan soon learned that a whip was unnecessary in ma kins tna norse speed. Before long the horse became acquainted Ith tb fact that the captain never used AMxi.innntiv . w a whip and occasionally refused to run. But when the rod was applied the horse balked. Th insrenkvus captain soon dis covered the falling- of the horse, and when be wanted to make him run he tried his new remedy. Captain Ketan laid in a supply of small firecrackers and always had them under tho seat of the bugsy. Hatches were alia
commodities necessary for developing speed in the new trotter. On the road when the horse refused to respond to urgings tho captain took a firecracker from the bunch, lit it and threw it out of the buggy. The explosion of the cracker startled the horse and he immediately dashed away like a frightened deer. On country roads Captain Regan used his crackers with such results that the farmers thought that the horse had the speed of Mercury. - - ; Progressive Feeding. Philadelphia .Record. Dr. Charles Conrad Abbott, whose work as a naturalist has made him. well known, returned from a fishing excursion not long since deeply Impressed with the cruelty that Is an almost Inevitable attendant upon living. Dr. Abbott caught on this excursion a pike. It was a fish about six Inches long, and on opening it to clean it the angler found, in its stomach a good sized mud minnow. He examined the mud minnow in some amazement and his hand felt something bulky inside it. Accordingly he cut it open and found within it a tiny pike. He felt now as they feel who studythose Chinese puzzles that have ivory ball within ivory ball, and without hesitation he ripped oDen the little Dike. Within it he found
what he had expected to find;' another mudminnow. Thus in one. catch he had come upon a pike containing aminnow that contained a pike that contained a minnow. Room for Reform. Philadelphia Record ' Kaiser Wilhelm has directed his attention toward the reformation of the German language,, and by way of a beginning has directed that the style of official. documents shall be clear and simple and that longwinded ' sentences swollen with Involved subordinate clauses shall be avoided. Unnecessary adverbs. foreign terms, slang. rhetoric and bathos p.re to be omitted. Who has not read Mark Twain's recipe for the construction of a German sentence? Begin with your noun and anywhere, not less than half a column down, put your verb; then shovel Into the intervening space all the nartlciDles. double infinitives and com pound words of which you can think. If the Kaiser should be able to suppress tne subordinate clause nuisance the despairing foreigner who seeks to master the language of Germany -would be duly grateful. .FOB., SALE REAL ESTATEHEAL ESTATE Read Hauger's Easter ad. un der head.
