but. notwithstanding that, the bidding from local packers was by no means unreasonable. They were asking slight concessions, but were inclined to pay nearly steady prices compared with those current at the low time on Saturday. On account of the limited competition the market was not as active as It might otherwise hare been, but & satisfactory clearance was finally made. In a general way dealers reported prices 6e lower than the average Saturday, but a few claimed that there was a decline of Sc compared with Saturday's close. Bales indicated a larger number of hogs below $6.10 than Saturday, but It will be remembered that the bidding at the close was 5 3 10c lower than Saturday morning, and it is probable that at least some of the hogs below $6.05 to-day would not have sold any higher at the extreme close on Saturday. The range In sale was from $3.80 .S3. anl a very largo proportion of the supply sold above ff. 10. ST. LOUIS. Jan. 5. Cattle-Receipts, 4,000, In

cluding 3.000 Texans. Market steady. Native

pearance of the outside demand, in fact, meets the object of the principal buying of the last three weeks, -which has been almost wholly by professional operators in anticipation of the conditions now existing.

The sustained character of this advance, its freedom from reaction and the development now of the normal easing of the money market, have evidently served to some extent to encourage the public to buy stocks, something it had not done for a long time past, either from lack of means

to operate, owing to tight money or to deep-rooted suspicion of the market. The money rate did relax very distinctly to-day and some of the banks reported renewals of call loans for large amounts at materially lower rates than those lately prevailing. The market rate on exchange fell below 6 per cent, late in the day. Time money also was easier and for the longer periods there was difficulty In placing funds. The foreign money centers continued to reflect the returning flood of funds to the channels of the money market.

The encouraging effect of this in New York

was somewhat modified by the demand for gold in London and the decline of sterling in Paris, while exchange bills were in considerable demand. Th5 possibility of

the growth of a Paris demand on London and its shifting on New Yorkwas thus indicated. The problem of future net earnings of railroads is kept alive by the continual reports of advancing wages. The reopening of the Union Pacific wages question was a distinct drag on that stock. The hardcoalers reflected profit-taking and United States Steel preferred was a notablo example of the same process, although the common stock shared fairly in the general strength of metal stocks, including the railroad equipment companies. There was some evidence of Investment demand In the bond market and some of the lower grade bonds which still return a comparatively high rate of interest were the favorites. Total sales, at par value, were $3,870,000. United States twos and old fours advanced Yt per cent, on the last call. CHICAGO, Jan. 5. There was only a

moderate trade on the Board of Trade today and the market was rather quiet, but

the close was firm, with May wheat Uc higher, corn o0Hc higher and oats up c. Provisions closed from 5c higher to 10c lower.

Wheat was weak early on lower markets

in the Northwest and favorable advices from Argentina, with cables about steady. Longs were disposed to unload freely at the start, and as a result there was a temporary decline. May selling down to 74?ic, after opening a shade higher to Vic lower, at TlTsQTöc to 75S73Vic. A small increase in the visible supply and a half-million bush

els' decrease in the amount on passage caused some of the early sellers to turn buyers and a firmer feeling developed. Of-

ienngs tecame limited late In the day ana May sold up to 75Uii73&c and closed at the top, with a gain of V4c The amount on passage for the week showed a decrease of

5S6.000 bu. Clearances of wheat and flour

were equal to 9Ü5.000 bu. Minneapolis and Duluth reported receipts of 792 cars, which,

witn local receipts of seventy-seven cars, two of contract grade, made a total of 86$ cars, against 9SS last week and bG2 a year

ago. Primary receipts were 935,000 bu,

compared with 952.000 bu a year ago.

inere was a fair trade in corn and the

feeling was strong, with a disposition

among local traders to bull the market. Covering by shorts and the firmness in

wheat were strengthening influences and the weather was unfavorable for the movement. Offerings came principally from commission houses and pit scalpers. The close was strong, with May He higher, at 43U438C, -after selling between 42Kc and 433c. Iteceipts were 472 cars, one of contract grade.

The bull leaders in the oats pit were ac

tive buyers, and as a consequence the mar

ket was strong, although the volume of business was only moderate. Shorts took fright at the attitude of the bull clique and covered freely. The close was strong-, with

May c higher, at 34344c, after ranging between 338c and 2ic. Receipts were 226 cars.

Provisions were active and irregular, with

considerable scattered selling throughout

the session. There was a trood demand for

January lard and May ribs. A rather weak

hog market was the main cause for the

selling pressure early in the day. May pork

closed 10c lower, at $15.9o: lard unchanged.

at $3.30, and ribs up 5c, at $S.67&.

Estimated receipts for to-morrow wheat.
