STOCKS SHOW 3IORE ANIMATION AND AHE S03IEWIIAT HIGHER.
NeTr York Tractions and Ohio Conlers Are the Centers of Interest Year's End Money Requirements.
NEW YORK. Dec. 1. To-day's stock market made a rather notable show of strength, and prices were lifted quite generally 1 per cent, or more. This was due to the sympathetic effect of movements In special stocks In which a speculative campaign was going on, but general considerations also played a part. Of the special movements, the most notable was In the local traction group. The accompanying gossip quite generaly pointed to a plan for a comprehensive merger of all the traction facilities within the Greater New York corporate limits, and a supposed share in the control by '.New York Central and Pennsylvania, Manhattan conspicuously abstained from a share in the movement, and was at times below Saturday's leveL The dealings In this stock were rather light. This gave some color to a supposition that the moveratnt among; the other tractions was designed to adjust their valuations to the higher level already attained by Manhattan. Another conspicuous center of strength was the soft coal group, especially the north-and-south roads traversing the region between the Ohio, river and tho lakes. Rumors were current of a plan for combining all the railroads In the group by making a holding company of one of the smaller companies. Hocking Valley and Kanawha & Michigan were most conspicuously affected. Among the more general considerations which affected the market was a hope that the December disbursements of Interest and ?iv!nds wh,ch are estimated at about 75.000,000, would afford relief to the local money market. The payment In London to-day of twenty to twenty-five millions of dollars on account of tho shipping combine alao aroused hopes of easier conditions in the money market. Actual quotations for call money were firm under the continuing Influence of preparations for the December disbursements, and time money rates were unchanged. New York exchange at Chicago rose again to par. but a deposit was made at the subtreasury of fcSO.Otf) for transfer to the Interior. The opinion of bankers, in spite of to-day's stock market view. Is for a continuance of close money conditions over the end of the year. There was some speculation an the assumption that selling of stocks on the ground of supposed anti-trust views to be expressed In the President's message would prove unwarranted. Some heavy blocks of St. Paul were placed on the market, the source of which gave rise to much gossip in connection with the authorized new stock issue. The mystery of the Belling was unrevealed. The seasonable cold weather had a good effect on the general market, and more especially on the coalers. There were occasional set-backs throughout the day, but the closing was firm and at about the top for many stocks. Bonds were irregular. Total sales, at par value, were S2.010.uu0: United States threes, coupon, advanced ft per cent, on the last call. Following are the day's share sales and the recorded price changes: -

UNION STOCKYARDS. INDIANAPOLIS. Dec. 1. Cattle Receipts, 300; shipments small. The receipts to-day were larjer than usual on Monday recently and almost three times as larg as a, week ago, but only about the same as a year ago. A few of nearly all rradea wer represented, but of course there was not a complete variety. The quality generally was unimproved. Th market opened with a fair demand from local sources and in the butcher department sales were usually at steady prices compared with those, current at the close of last week. Steers did not fare quite so well and In some cases at least were reported fully 10c lower than tha close of last week. Sales Included 1.157 to 1.342-lb steers at $4.65.23. heifers at $3.7504.23. cows at S234.29, bulls ftt 1334.25 tnJ calves at $2.5037.25. Tha liberal receipts in other markets to-day of cours had rather a depressing effect on the trade here and practically all dealers are a little fearful of lower prices In the near future. Of course, however, as has been demonstrated la tha past It I not safe to make any predictions. To be on the safe side shippers should be conservative In buy ln In tha country and allow a safe margin for shipping. Hogs Receipts. 3.000; shipments, 900. The receipts of hogs were a little larger than a week ago and fully equal to the average at this time in the week, but at least l.SoO smaller than a year ago. Practically all grades were represented, but there were probably none as satisfactory as those that sold at the extreme price Saturday. The market opened with all buyers In the field, and while it was the inclination to expect some lower prices in sympathy with early reports from other places salesmen were asking at least steady. It was not long until good competition developed between packers and shippers and the result was an active market at nearly steady prices compared with the close of last week. It did not take long to affect a clearance and the market closed steady at current prices of the day. Sales ranged from $5.0 to I6.42V. and this probably does not reprVsent either extreme, because there were no strictly fancT kinds and it appears none that were really Inferior. When President Roosevelt summoned six gentlemen as representatives of six coal companies to meet John Mitchell as the representative of ore labor company the contrast between the division of capital and the consolidation of labor was very striking. Yesterday the names of thirty additional coal companies were added to this list of six as operators In the field In which Mitchell has aimed at the entire monopoly as to labor. LIQUIDATION OF WHEAT
CU'Sns AN KXTHEMK LOSS OP A CCM, PARTLY REGAINED.
Corn and Oats Close Fractionally HlKher Provisions Are a Little Down lu All Departments.
CHICAGO, Dec. 1. Liquidation of wheat caused weakness in the wheat pit to-day, and the close was weak, with May down 8jiQs4c. May corn closed Uc higher, and oats wtre up i3Uc. January provisions closed from 2c to 5Q7Hc lower. The feature of trading in wheat was the unloading of a big line by the leading long and the consequent throwing on the market of a large amount held by traders who had been following In his wake. The result was a decline of over a cent In May, while the nearby deliveries were alro easier. The news in general was bearish, lower cables, liberal receipts In the Northwest and a large Increase in the visible supply being the main depressing factors. Buying by commission, houses at the low point caused a rally late in the day, the close being at lower figures with May öic off. at 75Q75Vc. The opening was He lower to He higher, at 75c to ToTsC, and the range between "4"c and 75Hc. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 322,900 bu. Primary receipts were 1.1S0.200 bu, against .1.52C.SOO a year sgo. Minneapolis and Duluth reported receipts of cars, which, with local receipts of 140 cars, 22 of contract grade, made a total of 1.UJ7 cars, against 1,924 last week, and 1,177 a year ago. Trading In corn was light and the weakness in wheat affected this market and caused an easier feeling, but toward the end of the session there was a fair demand and the early loss was wholly regained. May closing '4c higher, at 42?i'd42vfcc, after
selling between A2iai2iC and 4L,-5442T4c. Extremely favorable weather for tha movement, lower cables and only a fair cash demand were weakening influences. Kecelpts were 202 cars, 11 of contract grade.
Although there was little doing in oats, the undertone was firmer, a good commission house demand being the sustaining factor. May closed higher, at 32Vi 32?sc, after ranging between 31?8ti32c. Receipts were 236 cars. Provisions were quiet, and after a slightly higher opening, prices showed a tendency to move downward under scattered selling by longs and lack of any particular support. The weakness In wheat and corn early was a bear factor. The close was steady, with January pork 2Hc lower, at $15.K. Lard was down 5S7Hc. at $3.459.4V2, and ribs oft 2Hc at $$.1268.15, Estimated receipts for to-morrow; Wheat, 00 cars; corn, 295; oats, 200; hogs, 37,000 head. Leading futures ranged as follows:
