CHICAGO, Au?. 2.-September wheat today closed U'äC higher, having firmed on an improvement in the export situation. Corn closed weak, September ii'kc lower. Oats nt the cloe were UtiVic and provisions 2Q5c lower. Wheat was rot handled In sufficient quantities to remove It from the characterization of "dul!," although during- the afternoon there was a sharp upturn In prices which, on the surface, would Indicate a different state of affairs. The market sagged during the forenoon In scattered liquidation Induced by disappointing cables and favorable crop conditions. At the decline an Increase In seaboard clearances and smaller receipts at the chief receiving points steadied prices without Increasing the demand. A report that the export inquiry was sharper and a stronger attitude on the part of cash traders came later as a bull intluence, and the market became lirm on the sudden withdrawal of offerings. September, having opened at Tuc to Touc and dropped to 7o4c. ran up to 71c 011 a very little buying by shorts, and the closing tono was lirm, "ViTat over yesterday, at T0ifiTu"c. Exporters reported 23 loads taken. Seaboard clearances in wheat and flour were equal to is:3.uw bu, while primary receipts were 13,WJ bu, compared with 1,040.0UO bu last year. Local receipts were 143 cars, one of contract grade. Minneapolis and Duluth reported 501 cars, making a total for the three points of Cl'j cars, against 5ls last week and 7u- a year ago. Tho corn market was a dragsy, featureless affair all through. Thre was no material change in the situation, statistically or otherwise. A few Nebraska reports claimed that late corn, in some localities, was suffering from dry weather and heat, but in the majority of instances advices were that recent improved conditions were being maintained. Such information was not calculated to create a speculative demand, ard a longs still had corn for sale the market gradually worked off and was not far from its worst at the end of the session. September sold between M7hc and 3;c, and closed "V'-Tue lower at StiU'ijotle. Receipts were l6 cars. Oats succumbed early to tho downward course 01 corn. A faith in the long side of the market, however, was still evident, and it took only a little commission house buying to cause covering by those who had sold earlier. September sold between 33c and 3158c. and closed 'ft-jC lower at.arifi 33c. Receipts were 'SH cars. lrovis!ons were quiet. The market opened firm in sympathy with higher prices at the yurds. l4it eased later in sympathy with corn. Selling was chiefly in the way of realizing in January options. Pork closed 10c ar 1 lard and ribs Sioftoc lower for January delivery. Kstimated receipts to-morrow: Wheat; lt cars; corn, 27U cars; oats, 235 cars: hogs, :rX) head. UNION STOCKYARDS, INDIANAPOLIS, Aug;. 22. Cattle Receipts, 1,250; shipments, 2"0. The receipts of cattle thus far this week have been quite liberal, the total phowinff an increase of .over 2,0)0 compared with the corresponding time a year ago. The receipts to-day were 700 larger than a week ago and a year ago. In the native cattle market the demand did not appear strong from any source, and salesmen had more or less difficulty in transferring: their consignments, but finally about steady prices compared with yesterday were realized. The offerings were characterized by the small number of strictly choice cattle, and this probably caused buyers to be a little backward. In some instances it was claimed that medium grades were a shade lower, and all dealers agreed that the general market was as much lower to-day as it was higher Tuesday. Practically all of the fat cattle changed hands and the market closed quiet. Cattle weighing 1.30) lbs sold as high as $3.30, with several loads' averaging 1.1 to 1.274 lbs at $4.655. The marketing of hogs for four days shows a decrease of 4.5O0 compared with the same time last week, and the r-e!pts to-day were about the same as a week ago and a year ago. The quality generally was satisfactory for the kind on sale. The market opened with a good demand from all sources, and with strong competition the trading from the start was active at unevenly higher prices. Tho average, however, for early arrivals was generally considered 5c above yesterday. Ruyers were unable to get enough to till all their orders out of the Mr?t offerings, and consequently there was exceedingly strong competition for all that came in late, and sales were probably 5c higher than equal kinds sold in the morning. A good clearance wat made and the closing was steady at the advance. Sales ranged from 35.75 to $C25. and a small proportion of the supply sold below $5.85. BUT FEW STRONG POINTS

DECRKASCp VOU'MR. OF miIXESS OX TUB STOCK i:CIIAGi:.

n. & O. Lends la Strength nnd Activity Steel Minres Continue Firm Foreign Monetary Conditions.

NEW YORK, Aug. ::.-Dealings in stocks still further decreased to-day. but in splte'of the extreme dullness of the market the undertone of firmness which has recently characterized it persisted. There were more points of positive strength in to-day's market than in yesterday's, but the general list showed perhaps slightlj' less sympathy than was the case yesterday. The stocks In which the net changes are noticeable are very few. Baltimore & Ohio was conspicuously strong all day, rising an extreme four points, and the bituminous coal carriers generally were firm In sympathy. Rumor persists In Wall street of a pending consolidation of all the leading soft coal interests. There was a late spurt in Missouri Pacific, which carried the stock 2Vi over last night. Rumors of a beneficial agreement between Pennsylvania and Missouri Pacillc concerning the Wabash were responsible for the movement. Both stocks were affected also by a nervous short account. There was a vigorous advance in Amalgamated Copper in the last hour which lifted that stock 3 points over last night, carrying Anaconda with it 14 points on talk of further extensive consolidation of copper Interests. The anthracite carriers continued to show strength, seemingly on the general conditions of the trade, and in the fact disclosed by the Erie's annual report that the stock of Lehigh Valley had been distributed among the other, anthracite interests. The gains extended to 3 in Lackawanna, 35 in Delaware & Hudson, and 1 to l?a in others of the group. In all other prominent stocks movements were restricted to fractions. The firmness of the United States Steel stocks was maintained on a very light volume of dealings. The firmness of the market was in face of some rather notable selling for London account, due to the unsettled feeling on foreign bourses, induced by the FrancoTurkish imbroglio and disappointment over the maintenance of the Bank of England rate. The decision of the bank authorities on this point, in face of the very strong position revealed by the weekly statement and the continued downward course of the open market rates for money, showed that the future contingencies in the money market, when the crop movement in the United States comes to be financed, are still dreaded, The effect was manifest on sterling rates in Berlin and Paris and also here, the fractional advance in New York occurring in face of seaboard wheat clearances of 72).000 bu, or about three times as much as yesterday. The reported movement of cash from Chicago to Western grain-receiving points found Its response to-day in a drop in New York exchange at Chicago to 40 cents discount compared with 20 cents yesterday, while New York banks deposited $.0.000 at the subtreasury for transfer to Chicago. Bonds generally were quiet but firm. Total sale, at par value, were $1,955.X'). United States bonds were all unchanged on tho last call. BUSINESS GOOD Iff ALL TUB LEADING LOCAL LINES.

Garden nnd Orchard Trodncts and Provisions -"specially ActiveGrain Market Unsatisfactory.

Seldom do tho merchants of Indianapolis seem better satisfied with the business they are transacting than at tho present time. One of tho pleasing features is the promptness with which bills are met, many retail merchants even discounting their bills as soon as purchased, which seldom was done a few years ago. The wholesale houses axe selling on closer, margins than formerly, th better condition admitting of such favors to the retail merchants. The dry goods houses report their trade as much improved during the last few days. Prices are practically the same as for some days past, the milliners, hat and cap dealers and boot and shoe merchants are beglning to sell to the fall trade, which promises In each line to be very satisfactory. In prices yesterday there were but few changes. On Commission How prices were weak on eevcral articles, because of the abundant supply. The market on both Irish and sweet potatoes rules steady. The demand for watermelons and canteloupes is still fair, whllo receipts are quite large and prices weak at quotations. The apples airlvins arc of much better quality, and, meantime, prices carry an easy tone. Lemons are moving slowly, and prices are easier, riums, pears and peaches arc in abundant supply, and selling at prices governed largely by quality and condition of the fruit. Receipt of eggs, poultry and butter are Increasing, but prices are well held on account of the largo demand. Sales of poultry are much more active than a short time ago, which is due to the better condition of young chickens. The grocers are having a big trade. 8uga-s are weak in tone. Coffees steady. There is a tendency to higher prices for raisins, prunes and other descriptions of dried Iruits. Tho provision market Is quite active. While tho export demand is not as larse as at the corresponding period last year, domestic trade iw In excess of last year, shipments South and to Southeastern points being heavy. Locally tho demand is good. Hides continue dull, but leather is more active at unchanged prices. The local grain market Is seldom in u more unsatlsfctory condition than at present. Prices aro weak and declining on both wheat and corn, and receipts are unusually light. As a con-pquence the manufacturers of cereal products are troubled to keen their plants In operation at onehalf their capacity. The wagon market also carries u weak tone, except on oats and hay, which are firm at prices quoted.
