Th month opens with prospects for a pood trade, the only drawback bein the Indications of hUher prices In many lines. Yesterday the ilry goods houses made heavy shipments of poods purchased for August delivery, und in several other lines shipments were heavier than for home time past. Most of the houses yesteraay started out their traveling salesmen, and at the Vnlon Station the number of sample trunks Pent out showed that the cooler weather had resulted In the merchants striking out for fall and winter trade. The pincers had quite a busy day. The fine sugars are weak. Demand Is larc, above that of la.t year, but prtee3 are not ter.dy. At all events, lower prices are to bo expected before the midJle of tho month, l'ew berries are oh the market. To-day'? re'ooun-l In prices when trading commenced at tho Stock Exchange secrrtvl to be one of tho u.-ucl fluctuations of a narrow professional market and was characteristically lacking in any news to explain it. There was some revl.-ion of sentiment among the traders in accord with the new movement, but this was as much an effect as the cause of the change of the cour.-e of prices, llavins Fold stocks for three days, without any active participation on the part of tho outside public, the room traders bc-frn.n to feel that their short lines were getting uncomfortably extended, and they proceeaed to buy stocks to cover. The United States Steel stocks commanded the principal attention and rebounded sharply from yesterday's depression. There was no news of any change in tbe status of the strike negotiations when .the market opened, but the traders had come to tho conclusion that they were unduly pessimistic over the. prospect of u settlement when they snM their stock.-? yesterday. So they bought back what they so. el. Tho recovery in those stocks had a dominant influence on the rest of the ll.-l and on speculative sentiment in Keneral. In seeking for a buli argument to move prices In the new direction the recent strength In Norfolk Sc Western ajid otner bituminous coal carriers t.fTcred a k-au. That group of stocks was accordingly bought and bid up by traders, and the movement s; read to tho anthracite roads. The movement seemed to be based on the general consideration of the sound condiMons of the trade and the periodical advar.ee of 10 cents per ton in the prite of anthracit which goes Into effect tcday. The distribution of dividends and Interest to-day. including that on government bonds, was looked to to provide some demand for reinvestment. The continued advance thU morning in sterling exchange seemed to foreshadow some emtgo of gold, and this possibility was a repressive intluence on speculation. The sterling exchange rate now stands at the. point ;it w.iich the last gold was exported. The h'ghest prices generally were made before noon, and the absolute fanure to attract any outside following prompted the professionals to sell out their holdings again and take their profits. There was no more news to account for the paction than there was to explain the early advance. The selling at nrst was of Insignificant proportion, but lt was found necessary, in order te lind a market for even the smallest blocKs, to continue the concessions in the offered pi ice until the sales effected showed wide declines from the previous prices. I'nited States Steel more than lost its 2-point rise, and the preferred stock saved only a pmall fraction. The notable gains at other points were, reduced almost entirely to fractions, and numerous net losses were established. The closing was dull and heavy. Huslness in railroad bonds was small and there were recessions from best prices in the course of the day. Total sales, at par value, were $".."). I'nlted States bonds were ail unchanged on the last call. Following are ti e day's snare sales and the closing bid prices: Cl5-lnir Mocks. Atchison IJl.i. Effect of the rhlilips Sujprn!on Whent mnl Out Alio HlKher Advniice lti Ho Products. CHICAGO, Aus. l.-The grain trade was upset t-elay by the suspension of tbe Phillips company, which resulted in fharp covering nd a swift advat.ee late In the serslon. September corn closed S't.'iii?, oats l?ic and wheat ic higher. Other Influences contributed to the advance. Provisions closed 5c to up. Corn opened dull but firm because of damage claims from the "West and also because no more rain was reported. One Iowa message predicted an elphth of a crcp for portions cf that State, while farmers were bciiiR t.dvised to cut up their crop now for fodder rather than accept the flimsy chance of an improvement In tbe situation. Following the opening there was considerable sedin:, partly liqui latlcn but largely by bears who anticipated liquidation in con?equ nee of the temporary suspension e.f the Phillips commission house. During this period the mnrkft was at its pochest. Later shorts became alarmed at the fpet that the expected liejuidation had not come, and this." together with the influent. 3 of additional crop damage stories, caused a tharp rally, and the close was strong nt the best mark of the day. S?p-te-mber sold between h5c and tSc and closed 2li''ilv over yesterday at the latter figure. Kecelpts were 132 cars. Wheat was moderately active. September opened 'fcc to Vie lower, at 6.NI4C to 60. under the Influence of perfect weather in the Northwest and easy cables. In sympathy with corn there was a rally to $fa t'.L-c. but the bears were confident and a decline to GllMic followed. During the afternoon, following a perio.l of dullness, the cash demand improved, ar.d this, combined with sympathy with corn, caused an advance and the mirket closed firm and He higher., at Cite. Local receiots were 274 cars, ninety-one of contract grade. Minneapolis and Duluth reported 1 cars, against 274 last week and 2:r a year ago. Primary receipts were JWSiOO bushels, compared with 737.0UO a yer.r ago. Seaboard clearances were 1.23D,(X) bushels. Exporters reported thirty-two loads taken. Oats were handled In liberal quantities, but the feeling was bearish or bullish, according to the feeling in the corn pit. The opening was steady; then came a period of easiness, followed by closing firmness. September sold between HG'fc and 31'xC an! closed V"7 higher, at SlTc. Receipts were 234 cars. Provisions wfre again dull and featureless, but prices advanced on buying by packers. September pork cloyed .Vjc higher, at J14.40; lard 5c up, at $S.75. and ribs 5?'7lc improved, at 57.15.
