TONNAGE IS INCREASING

The train records show that there were received and forwarded at Indianapolis in tho week ending July 29 a total of 20.014 cars. 2j,2T6 bcin? loaded, an increase over the number handled in the preceding v.eek of l.I-Gl loaded cars. The increase was largely in local business, the new wheat crop begining to move quite briskly. While shipments to Tolfdo and Baltimore were quite large, the flouring mills of Indiana, Illinois and Ohio were liberal buyers. Lo cal freight agents are unanimous in the Opinion that they have never known traf fic conditions In July to be as favorable as the, present season. Aside from the grain movement there has been an active movement of merchandise and products of the various Industries of the city. In every line more goods are being shipped than ever known in midsummer, but few if any industries being idle. At the city freight depots full complements of men are employed, and some days work over time; on the bulk tracks the increase in business Is potlcable as at the freight depots. Calls for cars on Friday and Saturday to load with grain were numerous and the prc-sent week promises to be a busy one. Then there is a loud call for refrigerator cars, livestock cars and large dimension cars to ship furniture, vehicles and bulky freight, although thousands of cars have been added in the lis two years in these special lines of freight. Tho flouring and oerealine mills are also shipping more freight and would do even better but for the difficulty in getting corn in sufficient quantities to keep the cerealinc mills in operation. The stockyards and packing houses are doing a good business and all along the line there I? an activity unprecedented for July. Ruffalo Courier. Although there are more than half a hundred ticket scalpers doing business in Ruffalo at the present time, they are having a rather hard time of it, with the railroad detectives, both on -the trains and at the stations. In barber shops, stores, saloons and other business places, desk room has been secured by the energetic scalper and with his usual assertlveness and business activity he has so overshadowed, by the display of poster type, the original character of the place, that only tho old, steady customer or the man in search of a cheap ticket, thinks of entering. At the stations tho scalpers claim, detectives are 50 active that when an incoming passenger registers his excursion ticket at tfie joint agency, the special man takes his description and the number of his ticket. When that ticket is again presented at the station to the gate man. if offered by other than the original owner, it is .spotted at least two times out of live and marked "not valid." The result Is that the passenger is held up, forced to look up the broker from whom he received the return check, secure the return of his money and purchase a regular ticket. Tho fact that this is so, is discouraging the business and there are fewer applicants at the scalper's offices than earlier in the game. It was announced Saturday that the Lake Shore road had appointed a detective to each two cars on its trains between Cleveland and Ruffalo to catch ticket brokers who have been "buying up tho train" on tickets, originally at 1 cent a mile. The brokers have busied themselves with the cheap rate transportation which has been issued on account of the Fan-American exposition, and in order to protect itself the Lake Shore has employed detectives as assistants to the conductors. ' Fnst Train Service. One of the topics that received attention at the recent meeting of master mechanics at Saratoga, was tho cost of running trains at high speed. Elaborate reports upon this intricate subject were made by a committee of the most competent superintendents of motive power. The report treated the subject on the mechanical side exclusively, and made clear a distinction between the question, what dots it cost to run trains at high speed, and the question, does It pay to run trains at high speed? Central Passenger Association lines have agreed to co-operate with the Western Passenger Association lines in the sale of colonists' tickets at low rates during Augv-t and September, and it Is expected that Eastern lines will take imilar action. G. L. Peck, general manager of the Pennsylvania lines west, has selected as an assistant L. H. Blair. Mr. Blair has for some time being acting as chief clerk in the office of the general manager. He is related to the late J. N. McCullough, of the Pennsylvania. The promoters of the Cincinnati, Richmond t MuncJe road have asked for a franchise to run their tracks through Marlon. The effort to secure a subsidy from that city failed, but the company will run the line through Marion if a franchise is granted. It is reported that Darius Miller will, on Sept. 1, become traffic .dictator on all roads in what is known as the Hill combination, his headquarters to be Chicago. This is much the same position that J. C. Stubbs holds under a recent appointment with the Harriman lines. Early in October the general freight offices of tho Panhandle at Columbus, O., will be removed to Pittsburg, when the p'Sltion of division freight agent will be established at Columbus. U. G. CoufTer, chief clerk of General Freight Agent Hill, will be promoted to the place. The desired extension in time on excursion tickets from all parts of the country to the Episcopal convention to be held at San Francisco Oct. 2 has been granted by the Transcontinental Passenger Association. The ministers asked that the tickets be good to return on until Nov. 15. The report that the owners of the Toledo, St. Louis & Western have purchased the Findlay, Fort Wayne & Western Is given some credence, as it would be a valuable acquisition to the Clover Leaf. Officials of the latter Inspected the Flndlay road last Friday, and this gives color to the rumor. The Panhandle now has eleven crews engaged at Hartford City and Dunkirk in the work of raising the grade at thoe points. Two big steam shovels are In service a::d the construction work Is being pushed as rapidly as? possible, but it will be far into the fall before It is completed. The Southern Indiana road has sixty men at work at Seymour laying track, ballasting, etc., under the supervision of Roadmaster Clark. The yards when completed will be the largest on that line, and excavations are now being made for a new passenger depot and a new freight depot at that point. Paymasters of the Pittsburg, Fort Wayne & Chicago on their trip last week, disbursed a large amount of gold, and for some time gold pieces of the denominations of $5, $10 and $20 will be plentiful on the line of the Fort Wayne. At Fort Wayne alone $125.000 of gold was disbursed. $54.000 of it going to men employed in the shops. On the first and third Tuesdays of August and September the Chicago. Burlington & Qulncy will run a Pullman tourist sleeping car from Chicago to Los Angeles. The route will be via Denver, thence by the Klo Grande system through Colorado and Salt Lake and over the Southern Pacific from Ogden. This service is in addition to the Burlington's regular personally conducttd excursion. President Underwood, of the Erie, in Introducing his policy of operating railways, is effecting great reforms. A good many years have passed since the Erie paid a dividend on any of Its stock, and that in the short time he has managed the property the company should be able to declare a dividend, although not a very large one. is looked upon as very creditable to President Underwood. It Is given out that the Association of American Locomotive Rullders will at once begin a war on the Baldwin locomotive works, which declines to become a member of the organization. W. T. Interviewing capitalists and officials of railways, taking with him on the trip an Interpreter. Edward II. McHenry, who has just, resigned as chief engineer of the Northern Pacific. In giving his reasons made a statement that tends to reveal just how much of i power James J. Hill has become in the affairs of that road. He says: "I do not resign to take a better position, nor for rest, nor because I was asked, nor for many other possible reasons. I resign because In trying to figure out the problem of grade reductions I found a hill which could not be overcome." K. A. Gould, superintendent of the eastern rllvision of the Wabash line, is sending out circulars relative to the delivery of orders without stopping trains by a new device by means of a staff and wire holder. A wire hoop is set In a socket In the staff, and as the train passes by the operator holds it up to the trainmen, who catch the wire or the holder and avoid the delay of stopping for train orders. But few roads have yet adopted the device, although it Is tald to be a success. The plan to have all roads centering In Chicago use one station has been abandoned, it being considered Impracticable. As a result the new union station planned by the Northwestern, the Rock Island ami the Lake Shore will be built and the Dearborn-street station, used by the Monon, the Wabash, the Grand Trunk and the Chicago & Eastern Illinois, will be remodeled and enlarged. When the former completes its station the Michigan Central, which for nearly fifty years has occupied the depot of the Illinois Central on the lake front, will move into the new station erected by the Lake Shore and Rock Isiaml. Smock, of 436 West Market street, who was kicked by a horte on Massachusetts avenue several days ago, Is at the City Hospital and it Is thought cannot live. The receipts of cattle this week show an increase of nearly 400 over last week, 2.200 over the same week a year ago and l,6u0 over the corresponding week two years ago. Thus far this year the receipts are nearly 27,K0 larger than the same period last year. The market the first half of the week was characterized by very liberal receipts of common stock and a limited demand. It was very difficult to effect sales and on Tuesday and Wednesday the lowest prices of the season thus far prevailed. More favorable weather conditions and an. increased demand for meat caused a rail in the market the last half of the week and 15j40c of the loss in prices recently was regained. At the-close of the week the market was in a comparatively satisfactory condition and no doubt a larger supply of choice stock could have been sold at current prices. The receipts to-day were larger than usual at this time in the week and different grades were very well represented.
