FLURRY IN CALL MONEY
IT ALMOST I'HIXIIMTATIIS A I'AMC I WALL STHGliT. SliHre llreiik, I nder Pressure to Sell, n lliiny tin Ten Point Good Tone to Locnl Trade. At New York yesterday money on call w-as tirm at 51i7 per cent.; last loan, 6 per cent.; ruling rate, 6 per cent. Prime mercantile paper. .".UtVi per cent. Sterling exchange was easier, with actual business in bankers' bills at $4.S for demand and $I..Sl;fi4.S4si for sixty days: posted rates, $4.S3Wfl.S6 and $i.SfJ; cumrrereial bills. $4.S4TT4.S1U. Silver certificates were 60c; bar silver, 5r-x4c; lexican dollars, 4S-c. Silver bars e losed at 27i.d an ounce in London. Friday afternoon's setback in prices was the most violent whichhas occurred since tho present phase of the speculative movement began. It was absolutely without cause in news of anything that would do harm to intrinsic values of securities, commrce or industry. A Hurry in the money rate, coming em overextended speculative accounts, indicates the whole situation in a nutshell. It is characteristic of a boom that It should continue unabated Into the very teeth of such a situation, with every preliminary warning, but pushing recklessly onward until the actual event forcibly checks the advance. The eianger has been obvious that the speculation was everrunning the bounds of reason ajid safety. The buying) was admittedly without motive or information beyond the hope and belief that there would be enough future buyers to lift prices to a higher plane, and so offer profits. Increasing trepidation has been telt among commission brokers and lenders oi' money who assume responsibilities for speculative buyers that many of this class were stretching their resources unduTy, dependent as they are on the maintenance of the price of securities to keep their credit good. As a consequence there has been Increasing pressure frem commission houses upon their customers to take their profits and lighten the load. Uut the buying demand has been constantly reinforced by newcomers and the inroads upon tne moneymarket extended. The preliminary figures of to-daj 's bank statement made it clear that only a werk showing can be hoped for, and the bankers began calling loans to recuperate their position. The call loan rate ran up in e-onsequence to 7 per cent., and the speculators began to manifest acute distress as they found themselves compelled to look about for new accommoelations. The extreme sensitiveness of the situation was manifest , In the violence of the reaction by what was really a modcrate hardening in the money rate. Tht? delicacy of the situation was enhanced by the furious speculation in the morning in Atchison, St. Paul. Rock Island. IX O.. Missouri Pacific and a number of stocks inlluencecAby these movements. Advances of 34 to 7? had resulted during the morning, among these stecks St. Paul being particularly buoyant. When the pressure came upon the market these stocks were among those which were most affected oy the selling. Knormous blocks were unloaded on the decline at successive elrops of ife to 1 point, through many points of loss. The drop in Atchison reached St. Paul rM. Hook Island S. Northern Pacific S. Ilaltimore &r Ohio 7li. Union Pacitic 7?. Missouri Pacific, 6l4. New York Central. 0, Illinois Central 3. Wabash preferred 5!4, Kansas & Texas preferred -4. Atchison preferred 4, Sugar 4i, and a large numler o other stocks between 1 and 4 points. The bears were so eager to take profits aftr their long abstinence that their demand to cover caused rallies among these stocks of from 2 to 3-V IJut the rallies were not well hf Id, and prices went off aain In some cases to the lowest. The closing was feverish and unsettled and the tone continued weak. Hor.ds gave way In sympathy with stocks, but there was no great activity In the general liM. Total sales at par value were Jv,755.no0. Cnlted States threes and lives declined ! and the new four and refunding twos and new coupon U per 'ct nt. on the last call.
