LAKE SHORE COMPANY WILL EXPEND 1,000,0M ON TIIE ROAD. The I'rnnvbnniii AVIII Hold In Honerte ."MNHMMM of It New Roml Imhi- of lH,(MiO,40. The Lake Shore Railroad Company, owner of the Lake Erie &. Western, has decided to expend on the property in round numbers Jl,xX).0o0, bringing the roadbed ind Its equipment up to the high standard of the Lake yhorc. the track of which is hocond to none. The main line will bo laid entirely with new heavier rail, 150 miles having already been purchased, and tne rails taken up on the main line will be placed on the less important division lrom Fort Wayne south. The Lake Krie 6c Weptern has lilted up a train of f'.x cars, including a dining car, one for a kitchen and four cabin cars?, for use by one hund rd or more Roumanians who have been employed to relay the track between San dusky and Lafayette. The rails have al ready been put down a portion of the distance. Several construction trains are distributing rails and gravel ballast, as the improvements contemplate ballasting the entire line with gravel, a considerable per cent, of it new being only a dirt foundation, and in wet weather the track becomes rough. Thi done, the road will be equipped with new power, some of which is now building, and as soon as the improvements are completed fast line passenger trains will be placed in service. P. S. IJlodgett, the general superintendent, thinks there is an opportunity to greatly develop this property, and as he is well backed financially his predictions will doubtless materialize. Will Iluve n Lnrgc Resjerve. The most important feature of the stock holders' meeting of the Pennsylvania was the adoption of a resolution on the allot ment of the new stock under the increase of S100,0oO,(nO authorized. Under this action stock of the par value of JÖO.SOOXK) may be issued on subscriptions filed between June 1 and June 13, and nearly half of the Pennsylvania's new issue will be held in reserve to be allotted at such time .as the company may need money. It is not expected it will be required for years, as the first $5tf.Qu0.uv0 will meet the needs of the corporation in its expansion policy. An official of the road says the resolution provides for the issuance of stock to holders of record on April L'G at $00 for 33 1-3 per cent, of their holdings. For the first time in its history the Pennsylvania Railroad Company has adopted such policy. Ileretoiorc stockholders have had the privilege ot subscribing for new Issues of stock at par. The privilege of subscribing may be sold by any stockholders; the warrants to have thereon a form of assignment of the privilege; the treasurer to issue to stockholders on payment for the subscriptions temporary receipts, which will be assignable and will be exchanged for stock certificates on and after Sept. 20. 1101: the said stock to carry dividends that may be de clared on and after Nov. 1. The treasurer's temporary receipts issued for fractions of shares will not carry any divi dend, but will be convertible into 5tock when the fractions presented make whola shares, provided such conversion is made on or before Nov. 1, Ofllelut Hoard to He Reconstructed. The New York Evening Post yesterday had the following: "President Rurt, of the Union Pacific, and President Hays, of the Southern Pacific, together with Secretary Miller, of the Union Pacific, who have been traveling together from the far West, were at their offices in this city to-day. Both officers have bd?en inspecting the Central Pacific and 'other divisions of the Southern Pacific, and will submit their recommendations for improvements and means of operation. Doth oflicers will remain here at least until after the annual meeting of the Southern Pacific Company, which will be held in New York on April 2. Union Pacific officials will be elected Into the Southern Pacific board at this meeting. The present board consists of eleven members, with one vacancy, and it is probable the new directors to be elected will constitute a majority of the board. Since the last annual meeting of Southern Pacific shareholders the board has been entirely reconstructed. August lielmont, D. O. Mills, John ". Mackey and J. li. Haggin going into the board last summer, at the request of C 1. Huntington, not long before his death, together with C. JI. Tweed. E. Hawley and J. D. Probst. President Hayes and James Speyer were elected in the fall. Besides Chairman Harrlman, of the Union Pacific, it is probable that Otto Kuhn, of Kuhn. Loeo & Co.. President fleorge Could, of the Missouri. Pacific, and James Stillwell will go into the Southern Pacific board." Personal, Local und (ieiieral Noten. Cross earnings of the Wabash for the third week in March show an increase of over the corresponding week of 1100. For some days past the Pig Four' has been handling 5,j00 or more loaded cars daily, exceeding all former records in March. The earnings" of the Louisville & Nashville the last two weeks were the largest of any fourteen days in the history of the company. Traffic of the Wabash at Peru has so increased that the company will lay several additional tracks and improve conditions generally at that point. Robert M. Hemphill, who died at an advanced age, in Peoria, last week, was, for many years, master car builder of the Toledo, Peoria c Western road. The new Liographical Directory of Railway Officials of America, now being distributed by the Railway Age, publishers of the book, contains 613 pages. The Pullman company has delivered to the New York Central three new dining cars, the most complete in every respect the works have ever turned out. The Wabash has put on a number of construction trains improving the main line. Iletween Danville and Fort Wayne there are seven construction trains in service. F. S. Hunt, of Dubuque, la., has been appointed chief engineer of the St. Joseph oi Orand Inland Railway, succeeding H. Fernvtorn, who goes to the New York Central. David Clark, who died at Hazleton. It Is stated that the powers that be of the Union Pacific will create three new offices a consulting engineer, general superintendent of purchases and supplies and a traffic manager, to be located in New York. The Southern Picitie gives notice that the Monday and Saturday departures of the Sunset Limited from New Orleans will be discontinued to-day and the service will be weeklv, leaving next month on the 4th, 11th, lth and -th. Arthur (J. C. E. Schaff, general manager of the Dig Four lines, accompanied by his wife, will sail from New York. April 6, for Europe, to be absent six weeks. President Ingalls has sent out invitations to a number of railroad officials and business men to a dinner which he will give Mr. Schaft in Cincinnati on Tuesday. It is stated that one financial house in New York city control oil the floating pre
ferred stock of the Cincinnati. Hamilton & Dayton in the East and is at the bottom of the manipulation of the stock of this class. Efforts have been made by a number of speculators to purchase stock, but they have made very little progress. E. R. Day, of Hannibal. Mo., Is soon to be made first assistant engineer of the Darlington Railway, according to the statement of an official of that road. Mr. Day will succeed S. S. Combs, who has become chief engineer of the Southern Missouri & Arkansas Railway. The Lake Shore & Michigan Southern has granted its firemen the Increase In wages demanded some time ago. Freight firemen will get per hundred miles instead of J-MO; firemen on heavy passenger trains $ Lift, instead of J1.S5. and the firemen on smaller passenger trains will be paid fl.W instead of J1.SÖ. as formerly. For overtime the scale has been Increased from ls'2 to 20 cents an hour. Chauncey Fisher, of Anderson, Ind.. who f itched for Chicago, in the American .eague, last season, has signed with NewYork. In the National League, and will soon join the team. Fisher has been in form all winter, playing polo, and while at his home indulging in basket ball. His younger brother, Tom Fisher, has gone to Shreveport, La., to join the team in that city. James J. Hill and his son. James N. Hill, were at the office of the Great Northern in New York yesterday, but they refused to give any information regarding the reported purchase of the Burdngton. At the office of J. Plerpont Morgan i:o information was obtainable. President Mellen, of the Northern Pacific, said he knew nothing about a proposed consolidation involving his line. He said it might be put through by the largest holders of Northern Pacific stock and the stock of the other roads without his knowledge. The Chesapeake & Ohio has just placed in service three of the largest passenger engines in the world, and their use obviates the running of double-headers on the steep grades on that line. These engines, with the tank, weigh 2S7,Ooo pounds, the engine proper, 173..fj pounds; weight on driving wheels, 1X220 pounds; cylinders. 22 by 2S inches; engine has 3u0 boiler tubes two inches in diameter and fifteen feet long; heating surface of firebox, 3.0f square feet. These engines are guaranteed to haul a train weighing 4h) tons up a grade of eighty-four feet to the mile, with a curavture of four degrees, at a speed of twenty-live miles an hour. Benjamin Norton, who has been brought into prominence through his election as president of the Toledo, St. Louis & Western, is a comparatively young man. He entered railroad service in 1S77 as a clerk of the Delaware & Hudson. Later he came to Indianapolis and accepted a position with the Indiana, Dloomington & Western. In 11 he was appointed purchasing agent of the Long Island Railway, then traffic manager, then general manager and sec ond vice president. He came West again, in 19o0, as general manr.ger of the Ohio Southern line, remaining with that road until a few months ago. when he was elected president of the Clover Leaf. INDIANA FAIR DATES.
