HONOLULU, Hawaiian Islands, Jan. 30, via San Francisco, Feb. 9. Many Japanese andiatlve workmen on the island of Maul have formed an association on the lines of rcmo American unions and they have Etartc-d a sarioe of strikes. The plantation managers have anticipated trouble among the Japanese for some months, and arc anxious to supersede them with other labor erders. Japanese who are strikers are usually very promptly discharged. The twenty-three Tennessee negroes recently brought here have become dissatisfied and have left their work. They are raid to be city men, of an undesirable cla&3, and have proved an undesirable importation. Many of them are making: their way to Honolulu. They claim $23 a month with charters, fuel, etc., free. The last lot of negroes and Porto Ricar.s nave proved a better class and are working ?atifrfactor11y. Sixty Portuguese who came here from New England are also well liked by their employers. The steamship Zealandla on her next trip will bring about 700 of these. She will go south after leaving San Francisco, and take them direct from L04 Angeles.
THE REAL ESTATE FIELD
AX UNUSUAL ACTIVITY SHOWN FOR THE TIMH OF YEAR. Sereral Notable Tranafers of Property Made Mr. Lewis's Plans for Fl at a Permits and Trnnsfers. The prospects for an exceptionally busy building season are particularly bright. Architects say they are burdened with inquiries as to cost of plans for all classes of buildings and that many are now being designed Indicating a large expenditure from March until the end of fall. The fact that Indianapols is forging ahead and that real estate Is In better shape and moving more readily than in years past is shown on all hands. That . ever progressive city of Chicago fell behind in the real estate transfers and building last month while Indianapolis forged ahead and the outlook Is very promising indeed. Another fact worth the consideration of every one Is that Indianapolis out of twenty leading cities in the United States made the largest increase In construction in the month of January a total of, 314.26 per cent, over the same period of 1000. The increase for the year of 1900 over 1S39 was $606,000. XXX One of the largest sales of the week was that from the Lilly heirs of property on Capitol avenue to Charles S. Lewis for a consideration of $25,000. The land has a frontage of 249 feet and a depth of 165. It Is located on the west: . side between Eleventh and Twelfth streets, and has a history worth repeating here. Mr. John Lilly says: "It was originally owned by James P. Drake who sold It in 1S54 to Allen S. Mays, who lived in Coone county and moved to Indianapolis for residence. At that time the ground covered an entire block that is between what was known as Second and Third streets and Tennessee and Mississippi streets. There was a homo located In the center, the front being about 150 feet from the street. It was an odd looking structure, having a broad front with a narrow rear extension beginning in the center and running back many feet. Mr. Maya became involved financially and mortgaged the property. "When the obligation became due it was foreclosed without due notice to Mr. Mays and as a result there was litigation that was not settled for many years. In 15s63 J. O. D. Lilly bought the property.; from Lewis Jordan, who represented tho Insurance company that foreclosed the mortgage. Maya asserted that he had not teen notified of the foreclosing, and Indeed he- established tho fact. For sixteen years the Supreme Court decided at different tlmea in similar cac that an Innocent holder was not responsible to the original owner and the property remained in the peaceful possession of Mr. Lilly. After a lapue of another year and a change in the personnel of the court, politically or otherwise, a case of like character was reversed and the innocent holder was held to be liable. Mr. Mays then entered proceedings but Mr. Lilly, in order to eni the anxiety and turmoil and get a ctear title, paid Mays $10,000 and he gave a quit claim deed whioh settled all further question of tho ownership." The first part of the block that possod from Mr. Lilly's hands was sold a few years later, when Indianapolis began to thrive and grow and new homes were being erected. This tale was for a rpace tho entire length of the block and for a width of 120 feet on the west sid; then a corner lot at Capitol avenue and Twelfth street was sold to Mary E. Lilly and a well-built brick home now ornaments that part of the tract. An alley was run between the weat eection sold and the remainder of the block between Eleventh and Twelfth street and later, after other lots with frontage on Eleventh and Twtlfth streets had been disposed of another alley was cut running from Eleventh to Twelfth, and another from the east side of the first piece sold to the section bought by Mr. Lewis and forming a figure 11. The purchase of the ground by Mr. Charles 8. Lewis was for the purpose of erecting an ideal building or rather buildings for flats that will excell any in this or any other city. A close study of the architecture of similar structures in different cities was made and these houses will be unique as having a distinctiveness that will attract much attention and be admired by the people. The plans call for two fiat buildings, three stories, of pressed brick and stone,' and plato glass fronts, thirty suites each. The space occupied by each building will be 102 front feet by 165 feet, divided aa follows: One structure beginning thirty feet from the south line and the other twenty feet from the north line. Between the two buildings will be a terrace forty-five feet wide, wider than tho usual street, and extending the whole distance of the lot or 165 feet. This v111 be closed by a brick wall twenty feet high. Midway at the front will be a stone arch beautifully carved, carrying a swinging gate and the name, "The Lexington," engraved thereon. On either side of the entrance will be an iron fence to keep out wagons and intruders. Occupants will be provided with absolute privacy. The terrace will be beautiful with lawns, fountains and beds of flowers. The buildings are so constructed that every flat affords a splendid view, direct light and air. Those on the north and south corners will have a rear view as well as on the north and south, respectively. The entrance hall will be handsome and beautifully decorated, and will be equipped with ppeaking tubes, mail boxes and electric buttons controlling entrance doors from flats and letter boxes. Among especially desirable features are electric and gas lighting, gas ranges, refrigerators, buffets, toilet cabinet, mantel and china shelves. In the basement are store rooms for each tenant. One important feature is the great care used in making the building absolutely fire proof. Each flat is encased in brick walls and each section of two flats Is encased In Are walls. The cornices will be of stone. Tho electric light wiring is In Iron conduits. There will be steam heat, hot and cold water and baths in every suite. A steam plant will be operated In each building. Mr. Lewis says it is the purpose to make the rent as reasonable as possible and solicit the best clas3 of tenants. Work on the foundation will begin to-morrow If the weather permits. xxx The building which will be erected tor the Indianapolis Sentinel Company, at the corner of Illinois and Pearl streets, will have a sixty-foot front and a depth of sixtyseven feet on Pearl, running back to the Pres3 building. It will be almost square and built according to the plans of the architect employed by the company, though the structure will be the property of Sterling R. Holt. It Is Intended to make a newspaper plant that will be modern in every respect, departments being arranged so as to facilitate dispatch In the publishing of the morning and afternoon issues, the purpose of Mr. Morss being to establish the latter as soon as Installed in the new quarters. The building will be four stories, devoted entirely to the editorial, composing, press, mall and business departments, with suitable quarters for a library. It will be of brick, with very strong stone fourrdatlons to hold the tonnage which, with the presses, typesetting machines and stereotyping apparatus, will be very large. Demolition of the bulldlng3 on the site will be begun on Feb. 15. XXX Mrs. Sallle P. Qrubbs will erect, on the northwest corner of East and St. Clair streets, a block of nine brick houses. The plans for these were made by Architect H. C. Hendrickson, and axe now In the hands of the contractors, aa work will be bogin at once. The?e dwellings will be two etories and modern in all respects, containing seven to nine rooms, and will be heated by steam and have hot and cold water. The cost will be J1S.000 to $20.000. Mrs. Grubbs gold the six brick dwellings at Michigan and East straets a few weeks ago for a consideration of 121,009, a" previously mentioned. xxx Mrs. Ada W. Robinson has let the contract and work has begun on a frame residence at "NVoodrunT Place, the cost to bo $,000. xxx Another piece of property sold early in the week was the land fronting north on Washington street. Just west of Senate avenue, having a frontage of 43.6 feet and a depth of $5 feet, This abuts the eighteenfoot lot that Is on the corner of the two streets mtntloned. Dr. Lyman Abbott made some startling statements on the rights of the negro in the South during his eighth lecture on "A Study in the Problems of Democracy" last night. Ke said he applauded the attempt in recent years to have the best elements govern in the South. His lecture opened with a discussion of tne Indian question, In which he said: "Barbarians have rignts which civilization must respect; but barbarism has no rights in a civilized community. The wall which has been erected around barbarism in the form of Indian reservations should be taken down and the Indians thrown cut Into the activities of civilized life to take care of themselves. The negro problem is more difficult, but can be solved by the same law by a reversal on the one hand of the supreme and unreasonable cenfidence in the ignorant negro and on the other of the supreme and unreasonaoi distrust of the slaveholder. It is a mistake to believe every' people can vote. I do not wish to justfy the methods, but I do arplaud the attempt In recent years to have the best elements govern in the South. There should be drawn, not a color or race line, but a character line. Booker T. Washington should not be refused a ballot because his face Is black, when an ignorant, Incompetent, drunken white man Is allowed the right of suffrage. Manhood must come first, suffrage aiterwards. I regret tho recrudescence of barbarism in the operation of lynch law, but with lynchings in Ohio, with a Kansas woman smashing saloons In Topeka and another woman derollshing drug stores in Chicago, we must realize that this evil Is not distinctly Scuthern." N. K. Fnlrbank to Retire. CHICAGO, Feb. 9. A morning paper states that S. K.
