The week opened with an active trade In most departments, thecooler weather favorably affecting business. Sugars ana co flees were very firm and another advance in coflees would not be a surprise. There is little inquiry as yet for canned goods. The produce market showed a good deal of activity for Monday, Eggs advanced another cent, shippers paying 19 cents, the highest figure ever paid in October. Poultry la tending higher, with an improved Eastern market. Irish potatoes show no weakening in price, selling readily at 3 per barrel in large quantities. Some very good apples are now arriving and sell at 81 per barrel, while a very fair apnle Is selling at to $3 per barrel. Oranges and lemons are arriving more freely and prices rule easy at quotations. Only Jamaioa and Louisanna stock is vet on the marker. Cabbage, onions and other vegetables are in fair supply and prices rule steady at the quotations of some days past. The hido market is dull. The seed market is more active, clover weak and other seeds steady! Of the grain market little that is encouraging can be said. Wheat went oil another one-half cent, corn ruled easy at the range of prices of Saturday, while oats are in good request and advanced 1 cent en Saturday's prices. While Conditions Were Far from 'Bullish Wheat Was Easily Manipulated. Binrest Weekly Increase in the Vi-ible CcuUn't Prevent Wheat Irom Climtinz c Ccrn Gained lc in the Faca cf a Failure. TRADING AT CHICAGO. ProvUIons Were Stronger, but rroflt-Grab-bing lipid Them. Down. CHICAGO. Oct 21. Notwithstanding the biggest increase in tho visible supply of wheat over known in ono weok, the price to-day gained 4c. Corn advanced a full cent and more, in.the faoe ot the failure of one of tho best-known firms in tho trade. ' Provisions, too, were strong, but much profit-grabbing by tho bulls kept the quotations down at the close to about Saturday nignt'a figures. The conditions were in tho main far from bullish in wheat. Cables were lower, the local receipts about three hundred cars above the estimate, owing to liberal Snuday inspection, and the weather was rainy, just what it has been claimed the fall-sown wheat needed, but it was argued that the wet weather would cut oil receipts and there was pretty free covering on tho break which took place Saturday as well as rather generous investment bnyiug. An other strengthening factor was the contra- j diction of the reported big failuro in Paris Saturday. Mitchell, Logan. Lipn. Brosseau and others were good buyers, with Pardndge and Boyden leading the selling. Tho market weakened some during tho last hour, mainly on the big increase in tho visible, but tho close was withiu 44o of the top for the aay. The opening was about 'bo better than Saturday's clotting, and ruled firm, and prices wero advanced ab'04cmoro, then becamo easier and prices settled back 4c, held steady and the closing was about 3) 4c higher than Saturday. Corn was . fairly active and strong throughout most of the session. The weather was a considerable factor, as it was argued that the rain would cut off receipts, and the lirm feeling which ruled in the other pits also helped. The reeeipts were much larger than expected, but as this was due to Suuday inspection, it had but little effect. Shorts were good buyers, tnd there was some investment demand. looniV Cos'failnro seemed a nullity.owing. it is said, to tho general belief that when it occurred they were even in the pit Reports from tho country were mostly to tho etlect that the husking was very disappointing, both as to qnantity and quality. Initial trades were at H'a'io advance, and on covering by November shorts the price jumped up a full cent, the other futures sympathizing, but not to the same oxtenr. On realizing the market worked back 5sc, the action of wheat and tho prosoects of a liberal increase in tho visible assisting in tho break. Tho market afterward rallied :c on the smaller estimated receipts for to-morrow, changed some, ruled firm and closed with l214o gain for the day. Wet weather and the strength in corn was sufficient to scare eomo ottbe oats shorts into covering. May opened c higher and was quito excited for a short time. Much of the business clono consisted of changing November to December, at c difference. EQorts that proved futile were made to change October to November, at 4c difference. The close was at a not gain of The provision market opened strong and higher, and the advance was well maintained for a while. Wright and Cudahy kept testing the strength of tho market from time to time during tho forenoon by offering moderate quantities of pork, lard and ribs, and, judging from their subsequent proceedings, they 'appear to have conoludcd that it was strong enough to absorb more stuff without producing demoralization. They sold freely. Wright sold 2, COO. 000 pounds of ribs, it was said. Cudahy filled up the buyers of lard, and Steeves let them have all the January pork they wanted. The latter inoreased selling knocked oQ a considerable portion of tho early gain In pork and lard, and all of it in ribs. Freights wero slow, with ample offerings of vessel room at 2lio for wheat and 2c for corn to Buffalo. Estimated receipts for to-morrow are: Wheat, 545 cars; corn, 400 cars; oats, ICO cars; hogs, 19,000 head. Tho leading futures ranged as follows:
