Cliairman Walker May Ketirc from tho Western Traffic Association. IWiMHtr that tfce Advfrory Beard May Let tin Present Salary of $25,000 & Tear Remain Mors Freight Can Seeded. Chairman 'Walker and Commissioner Midgley; of the Western TraQio Association, are both in Xew York, where they will remain until after the meeting of the fcJvisory board, to beneld in that city next Tceaday. Mr. Walker is especially interested in the forthcoming meeting. His contract with tho preaidenta of the Western roads whereby he was to receive a salary of $25,000 a year expires this month. When the new agreement was adopted a year ago It provided for the election of six commissioners, fixing the salary of the chairman at $12,000, and that of the other live at $10. COO each per annum. Furthermore, it provided that commissioners should be chosen for one year only, and that an election most be held at the first quarterly meeting of each year. It appears, therefore, that the most important business before the advisory board at its meeting next week will be the election of the commissioners.: Even if Chairman Walker is reelected, bis salary, by terms of the presidents' agreement, will be less than half what it has heretofore been, and there is a euestion as to whether be will accept it. According to general report he has a good ofter from a large railroad corporation which desires his services as general counsel of the company, and there is little doubt that each a position would be more lucrative, and fully as much to bis likmg. lint there is anothti reason why ilr. Walker might decline the chairmanship at the salary fixed for that oflice. AlthonKb it was decided that the J alary of the other five commissioners should e but $10,000 each, it will be remembered that Commissioner Faithorn. as chairman of the bouthwestern Hallway bystera Steamship Association, has a contract with that organization by which he received $15. tOO per annum and will continue to do so for some years to come. Commissioner. Midgley, whether by contract or not, ia aliowed $12,500 by the Western Freight Association. If these two men are retained, and certainlv Mr. Faithorn must bs in crier to keep'his organization in the Western Train c Association, Chairman Walker caunot accept a re-election at $12,000 a year without being placed in the position of receiving a lower salary than two of his subordinates. This matter is just now causing some speculation in Western railroad circles. Jir. Walker is popular with the presidents of the roads, and it is generally predicted that they will solve tho probism by allowing him a much higher salary than that provided by the agreement. It is even believed in some quarters that the 2o,000 contract will be renewed, if necessary, to keep Mr. Walter at the head of the association. No doubt is expressed of the reelection of Midgley, Finley, Faithorn and Yinnin?. Whether James Smith will be returned aa chirman of the Transmissouri Association is supposed to depend somewhat on the strength of the Gould in tinence. CoIIIilons Becoming Too Frequent. The Railroad Gazette, in its last issue, cakes its monthly re-port of accidents occurring on American railways for November, and this itatemtnt shows that daring the montr there were 226 accidents, in which sixty persons were killed and 107 injured, it being the worst record shown in any month for years. The worst f eatnre of the statement is that 112 of these accidents resulted from collisions. A superintendent, yesterday, in speaking of this, said that something must be done to check the reckless manner of railroading which is now seemingly on the increase. The business in November was heavy, and more trains were run than ordinarily, but this is no excuse, aa the more trains the greater the care shoula be in moving thsm; at any rate, there is no rt ason for such a number of collisions in thirty days, and ' it shows a recklessness somewhere which should be severely pnnished. A few good examples in this direction wonld do much to check this haphazard way of railroading. The fault for accidents of this character lies somewhere, and it ia the duty of the general managers and general superintendents to investigate and see that the train-dispatchers or those Id charge of trains are severely punished when such accidents are the results of their carelessness, as is tho case ninety -nine times out of a hundred. Charges Against the Alton. A meeting of the general paasenger agents of the Transmissouri Association Las been called to consider charges of rate manipulation against the Chicago & Alton road. The charges are made by Chairman Smythe himself, who says that the Alton, by selling its orders in Denver to passengers going to St. Louis and Chicago, effects a reduction in the rate east of Kansas City. It does not seem to be o! any consequence to Mr. Smith that the alleged redaction is in territory over which he has no jurisdiction. But he goes farther, and suggests to the lines m his association that tho only way to properly punish the Alton is to take its tickets off sal In other words, he proposes a boycott against the Alton by the roads west of tci Missouri river. General Passenger Agent Charlton has written a tcathing letter to.Chairman Smythe. advising him to look after the roads in his own association which are jnstnow accusing one another of cutting rates between DonTr and Chicago. It ia not believed that any attempt will beinade by the interested roads to boycott the Alton as suggested by Mr. Siuytbe sine sn.cn an aDoertaking could scarcely fail to precipitate a ruinous rate war. Not Enough Frelgbt Cars. It Is a common remark of railroad officials who should bo better posted that there are a safticitnt ncmler of freight cars to move all the business if they were moved as promptly as they should be. This is not true, and statistics rscently prepared will demonstrate it Then, the car-service associations have brought about aa prompt a movement of cars as could well bo accomplished. Still all roads are unable to fnrninh cars. Statistics just published show that in the period from 1SS2 to 1SSS the tonnage increased 110 per csut. and the freight equipment but 45 percent. Since lSS larger cars have been built and the capacity increased in that direction as well as in number of cars, yet late reports show that the tonnage since lfcSi has increased 21 per cent., while the carrying capacity has been incre'sed but 11 per cent. The foregoing statements can be relied on as correct, and no to prove that the number of cars on the through lines of this country can yet be largely increased without overreaching in this direction. That Mooon MlVreck. General Manager McDoel, of the Blonon railroad, says that the New Albany correspondent of the Journal was misinformed as to the extent of the injuries received by the passengers in the wreck at Salt-creek bridge Thursday evening. Mr. McDoel reorts that at a point one mile 6outhof .ogan the engine and four coaches were derailed, but he says that none was hnrt, and that the damage will not exceed $1,000 all told. Tho correspondent has explained by saying the first reports made out five people killed, aud that his story was gathered from overhearing employes of the road discussing the wreck. The othcials refus-. ing either to attirxn or deny the report, he was forced to rely on rumor for details. ltatt-s for Politician. Lines in tho Western Passenger Association have agreed to make a rate of one fare for the round trip from points in the territory of the association to Minneapolis and return for the national Republican convention. On the application of the Chicago, St. 1'aul & Kansas City road these rates axe not only made available over all lines
between Chicago and St. Paul, but the ad- J visory board of the "blind" passenger pool
will be divested temporarily of Its authority to divert business so that competition will be unrestricted while those rates prevail. Persona!, Local and General Notes. Conductor May, of the Feoria & Eastern, is laid up with grip. J. H. Sutor, of Zanesville, O.. has been appointed general manager of the Zanesville tic Ohio road, dating from Jan. 6. J. A. Barnard, general manager of the Peoria &. Eastern, who has been ill several days, is improving, and expects to be out by Monday next. Eight hundred men are employed at the shops of the Pennsylvania Company at Fort Wayne, Ind..and in some departments the men are working overtimo, so crowded are the shops with work. The management of the Kansas City. Fort Scott & Memphis road is boasting that the road has been in operation since lacs and has never killed a passenger nor had a head-end collision. Charles Neilson, general superintendent of the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton lines, has recommended to President Woodford that he purchase for the company twelve or fifteen more heavy engines. The Chicago, Milwaukee fc St. Paul earned nearly $)O.00O.COO in 1S91. In December the earnings were (033,770 more than in December, 1&00, and the increase of earnings for tho year was over $2,000,000. The Chicago, Burlington & Quinoy road is receiving new freight equipment at the rate of forty box cars a day. The general freight agent says there is business enough in sight to keep every wheel turning for a year. It is stated officially that the annual report of the Baltimore & Ohio Southwestern road, for its present fiscal year, will show the largest business and earnings which the road has had in its history. Both the pasaengerandfreightdepartments show handsome gains. Many of the bridges on the Whitewater road are being replaced with new ones. One was completed this week over Cedar Grove creek, and oontracts have been let for new bridges over Garrison creek, Williams creek and Simonds creek. Two of them are long structures. John Newell, president of the Lake Shore road, has so far recovered from his recent illness as to be on duty again. Mr. Newell is credited with traveling more miles annually than any railway magnate in the country, and he seldom rides over other than roads under his supervision. President Ingalls contemplates making f the new world's fair trains, which will be put on in a few weeks between Chicago and Cincinnati, leaving each termini at midday, solid trains through to Washington, D. C, running over the Chesapeake & Ohio between Cincinnati and Washington. Since the first of the month the Lake Erie fc Western has' received five of the twelve new engines which the Brooks locomotive-works are building for the company. The engine proper weighs 106,000 pounds, has a boiler fifty-eight inches in diameter and eighteen by twenty-four-inch cylinders. Under the time-table which went into ef. feet on the Cincinnati, Wabash & Michigan road on Monday last three trains are run daily, except Sunday, between North Vernon and Benton Harbor, most of them so sohednled as to make very unsatisfactory connections with roads which the C W. & M. crosses. Prospeots are favorable to extending the long-talked-of Mahoning road, now under another name. A report comes from Findlay, O., that the company has secured the right of way at several points where trouble has been experienced, and will now complete the road to Fort Wayne and to Greenwich. O., where connection is made with the Big Four. George B. Dnnbar. assistant general passenger agent of the Burlington road in Missouri, has resigned and accepted a position in the East. Southwestern Passenger and Ticket Agent Orr, with headquarters at Kansas City, will take his position, and B. John, Kansas City passenger and, ticket agent, will fill the place made vacant by Mr. Orra promotion. President Thomas, of the Louisville, New Albany & Chicago company, has authorized General Manager McDoel to at once replace every Lridje on the Indianapolis division, between Indianapolis and Mooon, with new iron structures, and yesterday the chief engineer, with his force, begun making measurements preparatory to letting the contracts. It is stated that the recently elected directors of the Louisville, New Albany & Chicago road and their followers have bought the unsold stock. President Thomas is quoted as saying that the new equipments and improvements to be supplied from the proceeds of the new stock will enable tho company to increase its earnings Sl.000.0o0 the present year. It is stated that in the year 1801 mere firemen were promoted to the position of locomotive engineers than in any former year. This is due to several causes; first, the heavy business the roads have been doing required the manning of more locomotives; second, an nnnsually large number of veteran engineers left the footboard, giving place to younger men. II. M. Bronion, assistant general passenger acent of the Big Four lines, returned yesterday from an extended Western business trip, and is of opinion that passenger business will be good the present year. He states that he was struck: with the good name Indianapolis is getting as a business center, it standing among the foremost of Western cities in the opinion of business men at prominent points. General Managsr Josaph Wood and John F. Miller, general superintendent of the Southwestern division of the Pennsylvania lines, spent yesterday in the city looking through the shoDs, the freight depots and the yards, which, in each cast, need enlarging, bo rapidly is the business of the company increasing at this point. This morning, in company with Harry Miller, superintendent of the Louisville division, they will go to Louisville to inspect terminals there. John Lazarns. traffic manager of the Indianapolis, Decatur & Western road, states that should thfe earnings of the road the last six months o, the fiscal year, which ends Jane SO, Ib'Ji, be as good as inlSOl, and they are likely to be much larger, tho increa of the brat half of the year will bring tho easing of tho I., D. & W. road for the present fiscal year np to over a half million dollars, which will be a large increase oyer aqt former jear unco tho road was opened for business. The Ives-Staynor deal is again brought to the front through a suit against the Cincinnati. Hamilton &, Dayton company, brought by J. B. banning to enforce the payment of a dividend en four hundred shares of C. II. & U. preferred stock. The company's defense is that the stock is part of the spurious stock issued by 11. S. Ives and was purchased by the present holder after warning of its spurious eharaotsr. It is stated that all the Ives stock has been canceled except 1.500 shares, of which this four hundred is a part. The Vandalia will spend 200,000 this year in improving its dock facilities at St. Joseph. The recent purchase of river front made by the company is looked upon by those who understand the situation as a master stroke. When the Vandalia proposed to establish good dock facilities at that point the river-front property was placed at such exborbitant figures as to make it impracticable to make any1 move in that direction, but eighteen months of indifi'erence on the part of the Vandalia management so mellowed the views of the owners of such property that it was finally secured on very reasonable terms. The directors of the Indianapolis. Rockport & Chattanooga road met yesterdav aud elected as president D. P. Erwin, of this city, and Gen. K. B. Cowan, of Cincinnati, secretary and treasurer. On the first Tuesday in February they will hold another meeting, and if the weather is suitable will make a trip over the line between Mitchell and Kockport. where the grading for the road has already been commenced. Steps are to be taken at ence to have electionsordered in townshipsnorthof Mitchell, where it is proposed to locate the line. Tho friends of the project grow more aud more sanguine that the road will be built, and no one questions that it would be a vainable road for Indianapolis. The employing of Western railroad talent on the Fitchburg road is proving of great advantage to the property. Its business was never heavier, and the road was never before operated on so business-like a basis. A. S. Crane, general freight acsnt of the Chicago A. Atlantic road, was the ti rat man secured, and the results of his labors are apparent in tho large increase in earnings since he took charge. C. S. Anthony, auditor, was the next man. being from the Lake Erie & Western, sod be has brought j about reforms which have surprised the
directory. Moro recently Wra. D. Ewing, who for years was with the Maokey lines, was taken into their employ, and he is reported as making an excellent business record. . Chairman Finley has been notified by General Passenger Agent Teasdale, of the Omaha line, that be has discontinued the sale of St. Louis tickets via all routes through Sioux City and issued a new tariff with a raise of rates from Mankato and eliminating rates from St. Paul via Sioux City, to take effect Jan. & On recetpt cf this notice the chairman withdrew the authority granted by him toother roads to make a rat of 17. Co from St. Paul to St. Louis, via Kansas City. The Wabash people says that it does not make any particular difference whether the Toledo. St. Lou:s & Kansas City railroad pulls out of the joint agreement of the Trunk-line and Central Trafiio associations or not. The Wabash people say that the Clover Leaf haa not lived np to the terms of the egreement entered into a year ago. and so far as standing by the agreement ia concerned, they claim it makes very little ditterence. Those two roads are bitter rivals, and both are trying to get all they can of the passenger and freight traliic between St. Louis and Toledo. Both roads are doing an immense grain business at present, and there is quite a struggle to secure a full share of the passenger business, .. . m m m Will Address the Salesmen. Rev. Frank N. Dexter will talk on the Sunday closing movement at the Peoples' Congregational Church, Michigan and Blackford streets, Sunday evening. Clerks' Union. No. 1, and Dry-goods Employes' Union, No. 42. will attend in a body. Tuey will meet at True Friend Hall, When Block, at 7 o'clock sharp. All unions of organized labor, as well as all friends of Sunday rest, are invited by C. S. Darnell, presideur, and C. P. Hoover, secretary of Salesmen's Union. Article of Incorporation. The Indiana Wall-plaster Company, of this city, capital $25,000, filed its incorporation papers with the Secretary of State yesterday. The Creamer fc Scott Company has increased its capital from $00,000 to 575,000, and will move its place of business from this city to Milton.
