In a New York society column appeared the following recently: "Newest 0f the professional entertainers Is a young girl who plays the banjo and sings plantation songs in a room adjoining where a fashionable company is dining. It is said the 'novelty' has taken." If a like announcement had been made about diners-oat having to be entertained in a like manner in this part of the country it is probable there would have been some so-callfcd witticism about tne wild West in some Eastern journals. The wedding of Miss Era Austin and Mr. Edward S. K. Sequin, Wednesday afternoon, was the social event of the week. Among the other gatherings was the card party, Monday .evening, given by Mr. and lira. Dewitt Griffith, to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their marriage, and a like entertainment for ladies, by the same hostess. Tuesday afternoon. Monday evening Miss Katharine Malott gave a tea to the Seguln-Austin bridal party, and Tuesday evening there was a theater party for the same guest. Tuesday afternoon Mrs. Charles F. Kobbins had a chocolate, the decorations for which were pink and green.' On Wednesday occurred the marriage of Miss Rose M. Carrand Mr. P. J. Freaney and the first meeting of the Matinee Musical since the holidays. Thursday Mrs. John Ingram entertained a few friends informally for her niece, Mrs. Cameron, of Sidney, Australia. Miss Helen Frettyman gave a small dinner party for her guest, Mies Bookmaker, of Syringtield, . O., and Mrs. John 11. liolliday held an elegant reception for her guest. Miss Early, of Baltimore. Friday there were several informal companies. Mrs. II. IT. Fried ley entertained, Mrs. T. O. Morris invited a few friends to , meet her guest, Mrs. Hopkins, of Buffalo, and Dr. and Mrs. Frederick C. Woodburn fave an impromptu xnusicale for their guest, liss Campbell, of Louisville, who is a fine vocalist. The Arlington Club had a fulldress party at Brenneke's academy, and the Free Kindergarten and Children's Aid Society gave a diamond tea at Mrs. Arthur Jordan's, which as a very successful affair. The regular meeting of the Woman's Club was also held. While there was comparatively little going on socially, those ladies who have visitors from abroad have found many interesting things and places for their guests to see. Williams gave a party last Friday evening, at their home near Irvington, In honor of Miss DeXalb, of New York city. The members of the Venus Club will entertain their friend at the nfth reception of their series, at Mason to Hail, next Wednesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Moras entertained a few friends very handsomely at dinner Wednesday evening, In honor of ex-Uovernor and Mrs. L P. Gray. Miss Beulah Moore entertained a few young friends, at her home on lie Ilefontalne street, last Friday evening, with a "spider-web" party, and there was aleo music and danoing. A very pleasant evening was spent, Thursday, at the home of Miss Carrie Rea, No. 169 Clifford avenue. The hostess was assisted by her brother Albert in entertaining her friends. The hall will seat six hundred and each parlor two hundred persons, so that with the extra vestibule and hall room at least one thousand can be accommodated. But as the reception will continue from 8 to 12 o'clock, it is doubtful if that large a number will be present at any one time. For companies of all sizes, from fifty to five hundred, more or less, the parlors or hall are most desirable.
