THE INDIANAPOLIS JOURNAL,! SUNDAY JULY 20, 1890.
PERSONAL AND SOCIETY.
All tonetyaiuT prrtoiuu noies for the Sunday iweoft Jonrnrt. to secure publication, mutt he stnl to the cu'y editor by Saturday noon.
The usual midsummer quiet, in a social yraj, denotes that a majority of the people trho entertain are seeking their pleasure elsewhere than at home. The society notes irom the watering places are numerous, and rageafter page of the Eastern journals are given up to the records of tho social -world at .Newport, narragansett, Lenox, jlount Desert and the hundred other charming resorts on tho sea-coast and in the mountains, lcdianapolitans can get their whiffs of fresh water and a walk through the glens, but salt water and high peaks have to bo sought for miles away. There are hundreds who have to stay at tome for the lack of someplace to go that does not take hours and dollars to reach. The remark is frequently heard, "1 would go away tor a fortnight or three weeks, if it did not take so much to get anywhere." Much, of coarse, means tuonev. Peopie of this inland city would patronize a resort near the city, if they had it. and that they would do so is shown by the numerous parties that go to Fairview Park each day and take their lunches. Every renin thecars are crowded with gay parties that have been out on excursions. There cannot be hereabouts the temptation of a clam dinner, hut there might be something equally as enticing arranged by some enterprising individual. What Indianapolis has needed for years is a place for an outing, and slowly bat - surely places for outings there win oc. nere mere is a demand there will .be a supply. After a piano has been purchased, one of the Questions is, "What shall we have for a cover." Often the dealer settles that matter by "throwing in" a cover with the instrument, and it frequently hastens the sale. The. common plash arrangement, with its applique of tinsel, and silk, and chenille, is an abomination, created ordinarily by some apprentice who has no more eye for color or harmony of tints than a person born blind. The most gaudy shades glare at each other like cats at doga, and pink leaves and green roses with cold stems, reverse the order of nature with brilliant variations. The discord of color vies with the efforts of the embryo artist. The old-fashioned wool squares with an embroidered border were marvels of good taste beside this style. The throws and drapes of china silk and some of tho exquisite embroidered materials which are being introduced are as much of an improvement as one could dsire in this day of decorative art work, and ther i cause for thankfulness. One of the most unique, appropriate and artistio covers for an upright piano is the original design of the lady in this city who had part of it made by a famons designer, after her own order. 1 he combination the owner, made herself. There is a cover of satin, which falls n tout two-thirds of a yard over the front and sides of the piano, and it is slashed at the corners, leaving the sides to fall smoothly down. The front is draped np at each corner and tied with ribbon, and bordering the whole is a handsome fringe. Across the front is a band of piush, and, on it is a 'stalP made of gold thread. Signature and time-mark are embroidered on it with the notes to the words There's no place like home." The notes are the artistic achievement. They are of bolting cloth daintily painted, fashioned like angels. The head and wings make the body of the note and the flowing draperies its stem. No two are alike and yet there is such a similarity, that there is not the slightest incongruity of outline. - The tine embroidery which unites the whole is quite as admirable as the design.
