PERSONAL AND SOCIETY. The first two weeks of October record tha opening of the club season and Indianapolis is blest with clubs. The person who does not belong to a clnb of some kind hero is a curiosity. Cards, dAncing, musical and literary clubs predominate. There are any quantity of regular private meetings lor cards, ranging from four members to twenty-four or more. There are more dancing clubs than ever, the Lancers and Arlington leading in point of numbers. The Cotillion lias both cards and dancing, enjoyed alter nately. The Gentlemen's Club and the Century lead the men's literary clubs, and the Woman's Club those for women. The Woman's Club and the Matinee Musicale were organized the same year. The former has seventy-nre members and the latter
titty active and more than tho same number of associate membera. The College Corner is the oldest club in the city and has both men and women members. The Clio is the re-named Historical Club. Then there are the Catharine Merrill and Fortnightly. The Tourists' Club has opened its year auspiciously and promises a continued existence. The Maennerchor and Lyra societies will continue to delight the people with their music, and clubs for out-door amusement are numerous. The Woman's Club began its season with an elegant reception on Friday afternoon to representatives from all the women's clubs of the State, the members, with forty visitors, making more than a hundred guests. The speeches of the delegates were bright and interesting, and the entertainment was one of the greatest treats the club has ever enjoyed. Club life in Indianapolis is a beneht and an improvement and never a dissipation, as the name "club life" so often gives the impression. Now that the wedding season is at hand, it has been suggested by one who has gone ovef the matrimonial road, that those who are about to undertake their travels together should consult an almanao before finally closing their dates. The wedding day is generally safely chosen, but the reception days are the ones where trouble is found. The difficulty with the persons in question was that the four weeks in a month led them to believe there were four sets of days. Their cards were sent ont for receptions on each of four Wednesdays in the month. It was intended that there should be four receptions. After the return of the bridal pair from their trip, and the time came, it was found there were five Wednesdays m the month, xnnch to their disgust Four days to formally receive their friends were considered, enough, but five was bad form. Last week was one of those which come every spring and fall when what weight of clothing to wear is an unanswered question. Almost any day down town mightbe seen a woman! with a sealskin or plush cloak, and next to her one with a sateen dress and bead mantle one was too warm and the other chilled through. Many an ilaster morning, when that festival falls early in the year, one sees lace shawls and fur sacques worn the same dav, and the variety is always amusing. When the lirst chili days of fall come the housewife is apt to think it is time to unpack her cedar chest, and then when a cold morning comes she puts on her heavy apparel. The middle of the day she is too warm, and niaht and morning too chill. The Boston fashion of always carrying a wrap would be a tiresome one, but on sucn changeable days it is necessary.
