THE' INDIANAPOLIS JOURNAL, ' SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 1, 1889 -TWELVE PAGES.

PERSOXAL AND SOCIETY.

At a picnic civen riot many days ago, n young gentleman invited a young lady to A boat ride. In soiu way the boat wai npeet, and tho occupant bad a sudden and rcry wet bath. The young lady found her way to a farm-houso near by, and dofl'ed her garments, and borrowed soino dry ones. They wcro "miles too big." Tho young man etuck to his wet clothes, or, rather, they stuck to him, till dry. Tho accident is likely to hnvo a story-book result, and a wedding is booked for at a dato soin time In tho nineties, for the young man has noj. missed visiting her a' day since so tho neighbors say. The last weeks of cummer have followed all the others so far as social gayety is concerned. All summer tho people have been playing "follow my leader' more or less. They have rustsd to "West Baden and then to Martiu&villo or Turkey lake. Now ramping-out is the fashion, and if dono in an easy way it is delightfnl. With plenty of servants to'do all the work, a place near enoneh to a farmer for milk and vegetables, and near enongh to town for all other table luxuries, oiid with all the comforts otherwise possible, to bo obtained, camping becomes a pleasure. The all-absorMnt? talk everywhere is much the same, and fellow-men and women are the subjects. Nothing to thoroughly satisties the gossipy appetite as rnmors of an engagement. As a majority of those talked of a year ago have become marriages, fio it may prove that tho engagements announced this summer are irot all rumor. October, as usual, is the chosen month, and the list of weddings tor that month is equaE to those of any preceding year. Among tho events, of last week, were the marriage of Miss Louis Hibben and Mr. Kroest Wiles on Tuesdiy evening, several children's parties and tho card party- of Mrs. Henry C Roger for her guest. Miss Spencor, of Hichinond, and of Mrs. James McKcc. The opera parties nud street-car rides have been informal, though none the less enjoyable. The absence of people from town and the excessive heat, doubtless, aro tho chief causes why society remains so dull. Personal Mention. Miss Lola Gwlnn is visiting relatives In Kokomo.
