THE INDIANAPOLIS JOURNAL SATURDAY, AUGUST 17, 1889.
AFFAIKS OF THE RAILWAYS. An Old .Kallroati Project ReTlTed. An important meeting of men of enterprise and capital was Leld in Logansport yesterday to take the initial steps to organize a company to build a road from Logansport to Indianapolis, taking as their route ne of the lines over which the Pennsylvania Company once proposed to build. The road will be sixty-two miles in length, p gainst seventy-five miles, the shortest route now operated between the two points. Tho panics to the enterprise etato that they have been oflered ample aid to carry through their project should they take hold of it. It' is proposed to make it the Iniianapolis division of the TVire Haute &, logansport road, or of the Vaudalia lrom the north. It would make the short line "between South liend and this city, and also the mo!t direct line from the lumber regions of north Michigan, through a connection with the Vandalia. President McKean and others interested in the Vandalia express themselves as pleased with the project, but have not as yet promised any linancial backing to tho enterprise, bnt express a willinpness to work with them after the road is completed. One who attended the meetine was at the Pates House last
evening, and said that there was no question as to the road being built and trains running over it within the next fourteen months. The Period of llapid Construction. New York, Aug. 16. At the end of according to advance sheets of Foor's Manual for 1SS', the aggregate length of all lines in the county was 156,03 miles, all built in sixty years, the average mileage per year being nearly 2,G00. The same authority, referring to tho railroad construction wave of 16S6-8, saya the chief feature of that period has been the extraordinary activity displayed by the older and more powerful corporations of the Northwest and Southwest in the extension of their lines, with the apparent purpose of securing a firm foothold upon every available foot of territory contiguous to their several eystems. The result of this policy has proved in many instances unwise, if not disastrous. In 1888, J07,1U4.2W of interest was paid, an Increase; and of dividends $807,343,041, a dexrease. This conclusion is arrived at: In early days of railroads in this country, their profits reached ref pectable proportions. But the days of large profits appear to have passed. A railroad which, In the luture. can pay regular rtlvldends of 5 per cent. per annum, will be regarded in much the same Ifjrht as those, which formerly paid 8 and 10 per tent, without intertnUsion, for years. Northwestern Tariff. Chicago, Aug. 16. The general freight . agents of the Western and Northwestern roads met to-day, and began the work of revising the commodity tariff between Chicago and St. Paul. This tariff, which reduced rates on commodities in car-loads from 40 to 50 per cent., was adopted in order to enable the Chicago lines to meet the competition of the Northern routes, but Jndgt Cooley gave it as his opinion that the tariff was illegal, for tho reason that the difference between car-load and less than car-load lots was too great. The freight agents accordingly addressed themselves to the task of bringing ratos to a basis in conformity with tho law, and n greed npon an average advance amounting to about 0 per cent. Some commodities wero restored to the regular tariff, while others were advanced to such an extent that the discrepancy between car-load and less than car-load lots should not be so marked. Exposition Hates. Chicago, Aug. 18. At a meeting of tho Western States Passenger Association, today, the rates for the Chicaeo, the Omaha nnd St. Louis expositions were fixed at one fare and one-third for the round trip, except for two Thursdays, when it will be one fare for the round trip. Will Itesume Faj ment of Commissions. Boston, Aug. 16. The Pitchburg railroad has made the rate for Grand Army delegates from Boston to Milwaukee and retnrn 21.5.. The company has given notice that it will resume the payment of commissions to ticket agents on Ang. 31. Personal, Local and General Notes. It is stated that twenty-six of the locomotive engineers on the Chicago, Burlington & Quiucy road are now running on the Illinois Central road. It is stated that 53 per cent, of the gross earnings of the Cincinnati. Wabash Sj Michigan the last four months have been derived from passeuger business. The Chesapeake & Ohio management has ordered several teu-wheel passenger engines built, much of the same pattern of the one on the Erie road described in the Journal u few mornings ago. T. W, Burrows, late superintendent of tho Indianapolis & St. Louis road, has been appointed by General Manager Thomas superintendent of tho Mahoning division of tho N. YM P. & 0. road. Y. Eli, chief clerk of General Agent Helm, who was left out in the cold through the Bee-line-Big Four deal, will leave the city in a day or two. having secured a good position at St. Paul, Minn. General Passenger Agent Fisher, of the Fort Wayne, Cincinnati &- Louisville road, is, in connection with the general manager, liguring to 8erure through car service between Fort Wayne and Louisville. The Indianapolis fc Vincennes people are arranging to carry 1,500 persons from Indianapolis ana points east of Bethany Park to tho camp meeting to-morrow, nnd 1,000 people from the west end of the road. Six engines off'of tho Cincinnati division of the Big Four are now in tho Brightwood shops nmlerifoing general repairs. Engines Nos. 73 and 74 havo just come out thoroughly overhauled and renumbered 173 and 171. Thomas Doyle has been appointed General yardmaster of all the yards of the C., C, C. V St. L. and tho Chesapeake & Ohio roads at Cincinnati, and will have three assistants. The appointment took effect yesterday. Geueral Superintendents Miller, of the Pennsylvania liues, and Blee, of tho Big Four, will hold a conference at Anderson to-day regarding some proposed improvements which will be of benelit to both roads nt this crossing point. Tho Pennsylvania .people aro hauling dining cars airam on most of their fast trains, tho Union Pacitie is putting them on, and much less pretentious roads, such as tho Big Four and tho L.. N. A. & C, are arranging to haul thoin. Several hundred of the cars of the Kanawha Despatch, which runs over the Biff I'ourand the Chesapeake & Ohio roads, are to bo equipped with air-brakes, it being tho purpose of the management of the line to put on some fast freight trains. President Mackey. of tho Louisville, Kvansville & St. Louis consolidated lines, lias instructed his surveying corps to make new survey so as to hav the Centralia division of tho road strike the Illinois St. Louis division at Ward Station. Mis Emma Conkling, who, for several years, has been telegraph operator at the liee-line city freight depot, has been appointed chief operator of the C, C. c. &. Fit. I, at tho city freight depot, having under her immediate charge ix Hues of wires. C. J. S ted well, in connection with his duties as superintendent of the Cleveland and Cincinnati division of the liie Four, will havo direct supervision over the terminals of the U.t C. C. V Sf. L. at Cincinnati, including tho Biverside yards of tho Chicago division. Hereafter the heavy repairs to locomotive and cars on tho Cincinnati and Chicago division of the C. C, C, fc St. L. (Big Four) are to be made at Brightwood, which will necessitate a further Increase of the force, lu the freight-car repairing department twenty-tive men are to be added at once. In Georgia there is a railroad with-its rolling-stock idle, in which condition it lias been for years. Tho rond is twelve miles long, and could be put in good running order, it is stated, in a week. The road runs to Ducktown. an abandoned mining town, which had once 7.000 population, but now has not tif ty persons. General Passenger Agent Edwards, of tho Qui-en &, Crescent route, is making a great ertort to accommodato satisfactorily those who wish to attend the meeting of tho Army of the Cumberland ;t Chattanooga FepL IS and B. Present indications' are that it will require all the equipment of tho , road to cany tho yetcra-s. Ticket vrill hj
sold at on fare for the round trip Sept. 12 to 16, good to return until Oct 10. Trains will bo run through from Cincinnati to Chattanooga without change, except of locomotives. Thoso who are posted as to the affairs of the Ohio. Indiana tfc Western road say that were the road properly provided with freight cars, tho line would, with ease, earn its operating expenses and its lixed charges. The company has locomotive Cower to do four times the business it has een doing at any time in the last four years. V. T. Malott, receiver of the Chicago &. Atlantic, has published in pamphlet form his report of receipts and disbursements from May 19 to July SI. which shows receipts to have beau $7s9.42.54. Of this amount 661,524.91 was from the operation of the road. The disbursements during that period were $090,19.54. leaving a balance of cash on hand July 31 of $93,543. The Cairo fc Vincennes is said to bo well equipped with engines; there are twentylive of them, most of which are either McQueen or Baldwin build, and have been placed on the road since 18&4. Hereafter therepairiugof the equipments of this road will be largely done at tho Mattoon shops of the Big Four. In these shops 206 men are now employed, and the number is to be increased to 'J0o on the first of next month. Tho comini? annnal convention of the Lo
comotive Brotherhood is beginning to be of interest. The principal business will bo the election of a successor to Grand Chief Arthur. There is an earnest canvass going on over it. borne of the younger members of the brotherhood want to elect a new and younger man, but the prevailing opinion among the conservative members of the organization is that the "old man" will pull through all right. The following general passenger agents are having a good time this week at Cape May, mingling business with pleasure: Boyd, of the Pennsylvania; Scull, of the B. O.; Lambert, of the West Shore: Farmer, of tho Erie; Daniels, of the New York Central; Snow, of the Wabash; Wren, of the E. T.. G. &, V; Hancock, of the Beading; Holmes, of tho Lackawanna; Byiugtou, of tho Lehigh Valley, and Tuttle, of tho Trunk-line Passenger Committee. The net earnings of the Union Pacific proper must be very gratifying to the friends of the property. An official statement just made public shows that the gross earnings of the main line were for June &VJ05,i'.S: increase over the same month last year, $41,117. net earnings, $1.42S,!M: increase, $HM),S07. For tho six mouths to June 30: Gross earnings, $16,354,593; decrease from same period last year, $883,214; net earnings, S5,508,o,2; decrease. $500,967. Lines in which Union Pacitie has a half interest show a net deticit for tho Uuion Pacific for the six months of $57,796. On the Indianapolis, Decatur & Western road, for a j'ear past, two of its passenger engines, which haul the night express trains, have been equipped with an electric headlight, which has given perfect satisfaction. Never have they gone out, and the engineers of the locomotives have experienced no trouble in caring for them. Master Mechanic McKenna is of "the opinion that the question of a reliable electric headlight is settled, and were the I., D. W. road in shape financially to eouip its freight engines, as well as its other passenger engines, with this light, he would insist on the company's so doing. By the use of this headlight he thinks several accidents have been averted, where tho damages might have been serious. The circulars sent ont to the millers of Indiana, Ohioand Illinoisby Hervey Bates, of this city, and addressed to the managers of tho roads engaged in seaboard traffic, is creating considerable of a stir, and will likely come before the Interstate-commerce Commission. In this circular Mr. Bates takes the position that in making the rate on com from Chicago to New York 20 cents per 100 pounds, whilo on corn products, such as corn-meal, feed-meal, hominy, grists, and corn Hour in bajss or barrels, it is ii cents per loo pounds or 50 cents per barrel, is discrimination such as the commission was appointed to prevent. When competition is so close. Mr. Bates says that this 5-cent per hundred pounds discrimination gives the Eastern manufacturers of the articles named much the advautage. Eastern railroad men aro amusing themselves over a blunder of tho lost-car tracer of the Chicago te Northwestern road. A short time aco he wrote a sham letter to the superintendent of the Nantucket road, a little narrow-guage atlair, eleven miles long, demanding the immediate return of one of the freight cars of the C. CSc N. W., which had strayed on to that road. To get there it would havo to be carried by boat forty miles. This is little less of a blunder than that of the Railroad Commission of Massachusetts, which wrote a peremptory letter to the same superintendent requiring him to at once report the method of heating trains on that road. As it is operated 011I3in July and August, and to accommodnte persons who wish to ride on the island md cool oil', no heating apparatus is required. MINOR CITY MATTERS. To-Day Doing. The clearness of plate-glass windows is impaired by washing them with soap containing resin, which always leaves a thin, semi-transparent coating over the surface. Ivory Soap contains no resin, and if used with tepid water, a sponge to apply the soap and water with, and a chamois to rub the window-pane dry, your windows will prove the truth of the saying: "Clear glass is to a house what beautiful eyes are to a woman." A WORD OF WARNING. There art many white soaps, each represented to be " just as good as the ' Ivory j " they ARE NOT, but like all counterfeits, lack the peculiar and remarkable qualities of the genuine. Ask for "Ivory" Soap and insist upon getting it. Copyright. 1S6. by Procter & Gamble.

Dr. Chambers, who has during the past five years applied himself day and night to his profession, has broken down at his work, and is f orced to take rest in order to repair a severe strain upon his nervous system. His Iriends are hopeful that a few mouths' absolute rest and freedom from tho cares of a burdensome practice may thoroughly restore him.
