AFFAIRS OF THE RAILWAYS. Consolidation of Wabash Interests Meeting of Stockholders. A meeting of the stockholders of the Wabasfii Eastern Railway Company of Indiana was hold at lfcSO o'clock yester

day, at the New tho purpose of cles of consolidation "Western Railroad Denison Hotel, for Toting upon artibctween the Toledo Company, the Deroit &, State Line Wabash Railroad panv. the Wabash Eastern Railway Coin-Com-pany of Indiana, the Wabash Eastern Railway Company of Illinois, and the Wabash Western Railway Company, under tne naraeof the Wabash Railroad Company. All the stock of the Indiana corporation, amounting to $9,000,000, was represented, and the articles of consolidation previously adopted and recommended by the directors of the company, were unanimously approved by the stockholders. It was further voted that a meeting be held at Toledo, on thenrst day of August, to elect directors of the consolidated corporation The Wabash Railroad Company. General George W. Smith, of Chicago, president of the Indiana corporation, and John Maynnrrl Knrlan. ox Chicaco. secretarv. were present at the meeting and held the proxies of all tho stockholders not personally present. , The meeting of the stockholders of the Wabash Eastern Railway Company of Illinois will be held to-day at Chicago, for the purpose of voting upon the articles of consolidation. Tho new company has a capital stock of 52,000,000, and its main line extends from Toledo to Kansas City, with branch lines, bringing its total mileage up to 3,700 miles. As soon as the consolidation is completed, tirst-mortgage bonds to the amount of $34,000,000 will be issued, besides 814.000,000 of second-mortgage bonds, and &X), 000,000 of debenture bonds. Personal and General Notes. Division Superintendent Bender, of tha Big Four, who went East some days ago with his family, is expected home to-day or to-morrow. Superintendent of Telegraph Higgins, of the Big Four, whose office is in Cleveland, O., was in the city, yesterday, on business connected with his department. An increased force of track-layers has been put to work on the Louisville Southern road, between Frankfort and Versailles, and it is thought theroad will be completed within ten days. The Big Four up-town ticket-office will remain at the corner of Meridian and Washington streets. This arrangement is in deference to the wishes of Division Passenger Agent Martin. The famous Chickasaw Guards, of Memphis, will start on the 1st prox. (two hundred strong) for their encampment at Oconoraowoc, Wis. They will cross Indiana by the Monon route. The gross earnings of the Cincinnati, Washington & Baltimore road for the third week iu July show a loss, as compared with ' the corresponding week last year of $1,2C3. For the the tirst three weeks of the month a decrease of $1,73) is shown, and for the year, to date, a decrease of $1,999. A coolness exists between the Louisville, New Albany & Chicago and the Louisville & Nashville, and the former road has withdrawn its ticket from the offices of the latter. The L., N. A. & C. will place its own issue throughout the South. There is reason to fear this, course will ultimately result in au open tight between the two hues. The Pennsylvania lines announce a reduction of first-class rates both ways as follows: Cincinnati, Louisville and New Alb.iny, to Chicago. $5; Indianapolis to Chicago, $3.50. This is a cut of $2 between Indianapolis and Chicago, and of $2.50 between the greater distances. The new rates will be in eiiect July 27, and until further notice. A wreck occurred at Frankfort, Thursday morning, by a "Clover-leaF' freight running into an open ewitch at the yards, by which the engine nnd rive cars were broken up. Engineer Green, on realizing the danger, threw his son fourteen years old out of the cab window and then jumped himself. Tho damage to property was about $8,000. In answer to the questions of a reporter B. W. Vedder, chairman of the Southwestern grievance committee of the B. of L. E., said the Burlington is represented at the Kansas City meeting of that order as it was before the strike; not as it is now." lie declined to answer a question as to whether all tho Burlington engineers wero not now members of the order. The Railroad Commissioners of Missouri and the railroads have at last agreed upon a schedule of rates for general freights in that State. It makes a reduction of about 10 per cent, on all local grain rates. From Kansas City cast live-stock rates will be reduced an average of 15 per cent. The reduction in coal rates, which is of only local importance, embraces a haul of tif ty-five miles east of Kansas City, and shows a cut ot 15 per cent The Brotherhood of Railway Brakemen, in session at Ottawa. Ont., were banqueted last evening by tho local brakemen. In the order are 316 lodges, making over 15,000 members. Although called the Brotherhood of Brakemen, any person in the railway business can join the society if he has served one year as a brakeman. There are more than 5,000 conductors in the society, the majority of whom joined while they were working as brakemen. It is reported from Denver that the Denver, Texas fc Fort Worth has made a reduction of eighteen cents on tirst-class freight from Denver to New York and Atlantic coast points Tia Galveston and the Gulf, and that a further reduction of four cents will soon follow. Arrangements are also making, it is said, to extend the operations of this cut to Utah. Montana and all Northwestern points. The Western trunk lines are said to be anxiously speculating as to the ellect this cut will have upon Western traffic, especially upon the lake and canal rates. The executive committee of the Transcontinental Railway Association, in session at Chicago, to consider the question of differentials on California business and to arbitrate between the Canadian Pacitlo and the Southern Pacitic, is not making much progress. It was intimated yesterday afternoon that tho Canadian Pacitic wonld submit a proposition to accept, as a compromise, a differential of about one-half that previously demanded, and members of the committee are of opinion that saob a proposition would be acceptable to the Southern Pacitic. By decree of the Superior Court of Cincinnati, at the suit of the Farmers' Loan and Trust Company, of New York (trustees). Receivers Smith and Yergason will, on the 19tb prox.. at Cincinnati, sell the main line and branches of the Cincinnati, Washington A, Baltimore Railroad Company, with i ilts rancuisc8 and appurtenances, including its rolling-stock, equipraeuts, lease, real estate, etc. There is no appraisement on the property, but bidders are required to deposit ."i0,000 cash or $100,000, par value, of hrst mortgage bonds of tho road as a guarantee that the bid will bo made good if accepted, and the right to resell within twenty days is reserved, in case the successful bidder fails within that time to perfect his purchase. The Terminal Railroad Association, of St Louis, formed last Wednesday, will purchase the properties of the Union Railway and Transit Company, the Terminal Railroad Company nnd the Union Depot Comfauy, and will lease the bridge and tunnel, t will issue $7,000,000 of four-per-cent. bonds,of the proceedsof which it will reserve $2,000,000 for the erection of a new union depot. The roads immediately concerned are the Missouri Pacitic, the Iron Mountaiu, the Vandalia. the Indianapolis & St. Louis, the Ohio & Mississippi, the Wabash, and the Louisville & Nashville, each holding a one-seventh interest. One effect of the new arrangement will be to abolish the bridge aibitrarv. and make St. Louis tho terminus of tho Eastern roads instead of East St. Louis. Solicitor Peck, of the Atchison. Topeka k Santa Fe, a lawyer of reputation, indorse the ruling of tho Interstate-commerce Commission m regard to the uao or attempted use of passes granted by railroad companies to others than their employes. 1 his ruling is to the effect that if the holder of a pnss of that character, having ridden to the State lino on it, attempts tocontinue Iiih journey beyond it on tho same train, it wl become the duty of the conductor to collect fare from him. not only for tho remainder of his journey, but also from the point from which he started. This may be good law. but it falls far short of being equity or common sense. Under this ruling. BDould a person desire to go to Springfield. O.. by the Panhandle, if he rode from Indianapolis to Richmond on his pass,

and then purchased a ticket for tho remainder 'of the distance, it would be the duty of the conductor, on presentatiou of such ticket, to aemand full fare from in dianapolis; and if the passenger refused to pay it, it would be the conductor's duty to eject him from the train. In that event, according to this ruling, the injured party would have no recourse. It is not likely that any case will arise under this interpretation of the ihteA-state-commerce law in our courts, but if one should ever reach an Indiana jury the plaintiff could count pretty confidently on damages of an exemplary character. As a rule, a pass is not given as a gratuity, but for some valuable consideration. The Pasting of the Flannel Shirt. Bochester Morning Herald. The flannel shirt is a great institution. When it is brought home a proud husband and father dons it and goes forth to defy the sweltering heat of a July day. The next week it is washed, and then it is just about the size for the twelve-year-old son. Another week rolls round, and it is a perfect fit for the baby. The fourth week it descends to Betsy's doll, and tne fifth week it vanishes altogether; disappears mysteriously. It was seen to go into the washtub, but that was the last of it. It never came out. A Baggy Side, Indeed. Learenworta Times. A young lady was riding on a street-car on Fifth street yesterday afternoon. The insects of all sizes, shapes, colors and species, which are so numerous at this season of the year, were making themselves exceedingly numerous and feelable. A gentleman friend got on the car at Delaware street, and accosting the young lady said: "Yon are taking a car ride, are youT" The young lady made a vicious pass at a big June bug and responded, grimly: "No; I'm taking a very buggy ride. ' A Spook on Suicide Bent. Sacramento Union. The West Virginia sensation just now is a ghost who goes about in airy costume o' nights smoking cigarettes. That is all right. If the epook sticks to cigarettes his fate is determined.
