THE INDIANAPOLIS JOURNAL MONDAY, JULY 22, 1889.

AFFAIRS OF THE RAILWAYS. Personal and General "ote. .Travel in all directions was unusually heavy on Saturday. Tho C, W. &, M. had a car full of Indiannnapolis reoplo for Turkey lako on Saturday moruiiig. General Manager Beach, of the Atlantic k Pacific, has removed his family from Cleveland to Chicago. Tho Terre Hante &. Indianapolis m directors have declared a semi-annual dividend of 3 per cent., payable to stockholders of registeron the books of tho company at tho close of business tho lSth. . The I.. 11. &. V. has put on a through car between Indianapolis and Lincoln, Neb., leaving hero at 7:45 a. M., and arriving at Lincoln at 10 a.m. next day. Una will be a great convenience to travelers to Nebraska points. Henry Hartman, a Pittsburg steel manufacturer, ban purchased the Heaver Falls road, with all its franchises, and it has been incorporated with tho Kochester, Beaver Falls &. Western, and will bo extended to Wnrtemburg, on the IMttsbunr fc Western, thus securing a connection with theB.&O. Work has been going on at Ilrightwood during all the past week in tho way of preparing the foundations for the lathes and other heavy machinery that 19 to be removed to the shops there from the Big Four shops at Cincinnati. Just how much the "working force there will bo increased has not been determined, but it will be sntlicient increase to put additional life into that thriving suburb. The Railroad Gazette is of the opinion that the action of the Indian government, in rejecting the Westinghouse air-brake for the automatic vacuum, was a prodigious blunder. It holds that as against the recent severe tests at Carlsruhe and the continuous years of actual use in this country, under all conceivable ciicuni- . stances and conditions, the Indian experiments were trilling and the result absurd. Mention was made in the Journal of the 12th of the number of trains arriving daily at the principal ntations in the country, in "which it was shown that tho Union Station 'at Indianapolis led. with 134 trains, followed next by the Urand Central, at New York, with 110 daily trains. In this statement the Jersey City station of tho Erie railroad was overlooked. From this sta

tion 133 trains arrive and depart daily, only one less than the number at tho Indian- I 'apolis Union Station. The nrospects for tho success of the several Niagara Falls excursions are very flattering, inquiries by letter and personally being made by the hundreds. Notwithstanding this fact, however, there is an impression in the minds of some of the city '.ticket agents that this season will witness the last of these cheap excursions. There isnoprotit in them to the railroad companies, even as an advertisement, and the better class of travel is beginning to avoid them, preferring to pay full faro and avoid the crowd. A summary of the train accidents during Jnne Bhows that there were thirtythree collisions, forty-two derailments and four other accidents a total of seventynine in which thirty-live persons were killed and one hundred and two injured. There were fifteen rear, collisions, eleven butting and three crossing. , Ot the derailments, four were on account of broken bridge or trestle, four on account of misplaced switch, six from cattle on track and twenty unexplained. But one was from malicious obstruction. The Philadelphia &. Heading continues its struggle for an elevated way into the heart cf Philadelphia. The latest phase is shown by its having secured building jcrmits for the erection of a viaduct between Willow, Division, Callowhill and Carlton and Eleventh streetj. These permits do not allow bridging of the streets. It is not thought that the company will be permitted to cross the streets without further authority. The latest information concerning the matter is that the Heading ironworks will bo put to work on the structural luaterial for this improvement. The Baltimore & Ohio ha9 "organized a storekeeper's department, to include tho care of all materials and stores on tho entire system, and G, W. Valiant, formerly chief clerk of the machinery department, Jias been appointed general storekeeper, reporting to the general manager. The materials and stores of the company have heretofore been in charge of the machinery department, but the new department will be distinct from all others. A new system of accounts for the operating departments ?.s also being introduced by this company, with the advice and under direction of Mnj. II. 1). Bulkier, an expert accountant, who has been employed by the board of directors for over a year in going over the entire records of tho company and adjusting the accounts. Tho rumors about an issue of a 100-year consolidated mortgage 4-per-cent. bond, to take up the higher rate bonds of the Chicago, Milwaukee &. St. Paul Kail way Company, continue to circulate, without any apparent authority. It is said the plan originated among bnglisu security holders. and was suggested as a refunding measure lor high-rate outstanding bonds as they mature. Tho bonds of the road maturing. up to and including 1810. aggregate $12,51U.00U, or wnmn tf-JTa.OOU bear a per cent,, fc,w,UW G per cent., S,oX3,lX)0 7 per cent, and SvJ.G74.OuO 8 per cent. This out of a total bonded indebtness of $U9,9S,000. But there are $23,514,00 of the sevens of 10O. vet unissued, and the mort gage not only provides for the issue of these bonds, but compels it. ice-presidentBond, of the St. Paul company, who was inter viewed on the subject, went no further than to declare that the company had not issued tneone-liundred-year four-per-cent. mortgage. The following extract and comment we clip from the Kauroad Gazette of tho 19th: A superintendent says the employes who are the most interest do not ask for any im proved car-couplers. This seems to be l a. a. mi , . aoout correct. ne oraKemen who are killed should be the oiks the most inter ested. No one ever heard of a dead brakoman asking for au improved coupler! The loic of this superintendent is very convincing. Kailway Service Gazette. The application of the above lies in the truth of it. 'That superintendent is, unfortunately, numerous. Nothing is more familiar among railroad men than that such and such men who made a false motion or a misstep, and lost hands or legs. were old and experienced, and reputed to be the best men in the service; and yet tnese men s opinions, before they are hurt, are accepted as incontrovertible truth. They know that they have become very dextrous in tho use of link and pin coup lers, and they, therefore, compare such couplers with those- which require no man ipulation whatever, and their decisions are accepted by the superintendent. In point of fact there can be no real comparison whatever on the lines adopted by the brakeman. It is just as senseless as tho stand taken by the hand laborer who com bines with his fellows to destroy a laborsaving machine, and the actual grounds of comparison are about as fallacious in ono case as the other. For sometime past tho management of tho Atchison, lopeka & JSanta Ye has been conspicuous lor metlicieucy. but it is claimed tor tne new directorate that it combines a great deal of experience, good judgment, and administrative skill, which will enable the company to pull out of the rut in which it has been running, and get upon a good, paying basis. A prominent member of the house of Kidder, Peabody tSc Co., in a recent interview said if all tho capital of the country were back of the A.. i. ku c r., it nuuiu not neip it ns much ns an improvement in the management. and the latter. he claimed. very positively had been secured. Considering Governor Ames's proposition to rc- . A . ' . v luna tne outsranuing coupons, tne same gentleman said he thought there was a good deal of practical business sense m it, but the subject had not been discussed bv the board, and probably would not be until the earning capacity of the road for the year was shown. . If it was found necessary to scale tho bonds or 'luiid any of the coupons, it would bo done in a way that would be iut ami satisfactory to seenrity holdtTs. With reference to tho rumored dilliciilty between his house and that of Morgan, Drexel A: Co., touching the attairs of thj A., T. V S. F., tho geurteman said there wa no ground for such statement that their relations were and always had been pleasant. .Morgan. Drexel &. Co. had been invited to name a member of the board of directors of tho road, and to take an active interest in its attaint, but had de clined, in is, however, caused no ill feel ing whatever.
