- AFFAIRS OF THE RAILWAYS. FrHght Itusiness Improving. Tho train records show that there tvere received and forwarded at Indianapolis last week l more loaded cars than in the week, ending July f, and the entire increase is shown to have been in the last three days of tho week, which leads freight men to "believe that for some weeks to come through business is to be in excess of that cf some weeks past, both east and westlound. Eastward tho shipments of livo fctock are unusually heavy, in fact, heavier than ever before known in July. Then, cereals are moving east ward more freely.and ehipments of hard-wood lumber, heading end staves are on the increase. Westward, tho tonnage of first-class freight is large for so early in the season, which shows that tho merchants over the West, tho Southwest and the Northwest are anticipating an excellent fall trade. Shipments f anthracite coals to Western points, up to the present time, havo amounted to but little. It will be noticed that all the north- and-south lines show a handsome increase in movement of loaded cars over either of the years with which comparisons are made. Without question, north-and-south lines nre doing a heavier traftic this summer than in any former year. Shipments of grain, provisions, ice and machinery southward are nausually large, and tho products of the South, such as watermelons, vegetables and fruits, are coining north In large quantities. Local business, more noticeably inbound, is heavy; it consists largely of grain, building material, timber in the rough, and Jive stock. In some of the citv depots the
tnen are working over-time, which is rather unusual in July. Freight men, without exception, are looking for a heavy fall traflic of a local character, and considerable imnrovement in throuch business also, so promising are the crops along the roads crossing the State, in all directions. Some freight men, however, fear that the present disturbance in rates will temporarily check business, as shim;:r3 mav think that bot tom rates have hot been touched. Ohio company, which appropriates mnnpi nnninlli' tn mm. port of the employes' library, will herenci istsseacu employe ii cents per annum to support the institution, and all the money that the company contributes vill be used id purchasing new books. It js feared that tho Niagara Falls excursions will demoralize rates this year to ft greater ex tent than in any former year. Itia alleged that two of the roads which propose to run them nre giving twenty to thirty days for persons to return, the tickets to be good on any regular trains for returning. For one hour and thirty minntes yesterday there was not a train moving on the C, St. L. ami P. road between Indianapolis nnd Columbus, which. Superintendent Miller says, is the first time such a thing has occured in the history of the road, nnd is due to the abandoning of freight trains on Sunday. President In calls has asked tho managers of all ro. ids centering here to attend the meeting on Wednesday r.ud vote who shall be superintendent. Several other important matters are coming up for consideration. One is the adoption of some uniform method of checking and charging for excess baggage; another is tho question of Belt road engines doing switching on the Union tracks and at tho Union Station. Kobert Blee, general superintendent of C, C, C. &, St. L., (Big Four) has gained an enviable reputation as an arbitrator of questions in dispute between railroad companies, but his duties are now so increased that he will give this usually charitable "work the go-by. His reputation has been won on tho lair manner hescttles questions in dispute. Recently he was called upon to arbitrate a caho between the Chicago & Alton and tho Indianapolis &, :t. Louis companies. T. W. Burrows was at the timo superintendent ol the road. The Chicago k Alton selected Mr. Bice as arbitrator, and Mr. Burrows was greatly T'sed to accept him on tho part of the I. tiU L Alter hearing thu atoriea d1 botk"

The Kansas Citv naners have taken no the cause of the Chicago & Alton and the Wabash, demanding that Kansas City be a transfer point for everything, as Chir 3go is, practically. Indianapolis be made a point of transfer of everything. It is fast becoming little else than a good-sized way-station. The more the election of M. E. Ingalls. president, and William R. McKeen, vicepresident and general manager of the Union Railway Company, is thought of, the better is it liked. Said an observing business man, and one who has had more or less to do with railroads: "Some things will nowbo done, one of the most important or which is the building of the viaduct on Meridian street. Mr. Ingalls," said he, is not afraid of litigation. He will build the viaduct and then tight the damage suits in the courts if the city gives him half a show. w nat he has accomplished at Cincinnati at lirst met "with much more opposition than have any of the enterprises which the Union Railway Company , has undertaken here, and in every case where the questions in dispute went to the courts Mr. Ingalls came out the winner. The viaduct is an improvement needed, and when it is done it will be ap preciated, and those who have the most ob jected to it will be among those most pieasea alter its completion. The fact is, Mr. Ingall likes Indianapolis, and is dis posed to neip Doom it if the city authorities will back him in anything which is reasonable, and he never asks anything more, as is shown in his movements in Cincinnati. His worst enemies there admit that he has done more to keep Cincinnati within distance of other cities than has any other man residing there. The Grand Central depot and the new Chesapeake & Ohio bridge are both striking examples of what one man can do who has an aggressive, bold way of doing things." The Modern Minotaur. New York Telegram. Verily, there is nothing new under the sun. In the days of long ago they kept a monster in the Island of Crete, a combination of man and bull, called the Minotaur. Because of an early indiscretion of tho Athenians, in killing a member of the royal family of Crete, Athens sent seven choice maidens, once every nino years, to be devoured by tho M inotaur. Mr. Theseus finally knocked out the insatiate monster, but there must be such a thing as transmigration of souls, or there is a modern Minotaur now living in Europe. Like his venerable namesake, he is only half man, and he lives in a labyrinth, too a labyrinth of decayed titles, unpaid mortgages and ramshackle respectability. Not onco in nine years, but several times each year. America sends over her choice young maidens to be sacrificed to this titled European Minotaur. He must bo fed and sustained, somehow, and our gilt-edged girls appear doomed to appease the monster's appetite and raise the mortgages on his family estates. Some da perhaps, our girls will wish Mr. Theseus would come along and lay the monster out. - -. Chasing: Rainbows In the Northwest. TJtlca Morning Herald. Democratic papers are breaking out with lad exclamations at learning that "the democratic national committee does not intend to let the election in the four new northwest States go by default, but has decided to make a vigorous light in all four of the States." The English of which is that Colonel Brice has discovered more rainbows in the Northwest, and will chase them. The Court Record. SUPERIOR COURT. New Suits Filed. Henry G.
