Wheat Weaker on More Favorable Report of the Crops iu the Northwest. Corn Easier and Lower, with a Moderate Business in a Lower Kange Oat Slow and Easier Ho? Products Fairly Active. JIOXY, STOCKS AND BOXDS. Considerable IrrejrularUj in the Market xrith Declines the Most Numerous. NEW YORK, July 5. Money on call was easy at 37 percent, the last loan being made at 3. Prime mercantile paper, 4S53-i per cent. Sterling exchange quiet but steady at H6I for sixty-day bills, and H8?34 for demand. ' The total sales of stocks to-day were 275, .. shares, including tho following: Atchison, 43,100; Delaware, Lackawanna & Western, 8.500; Erie. 8,610; Lake Shore, 12,bTjQi Missouri Pacific, 11,2S0; Northwestern, 15,430;' Heading. 50,133; St. Paul, 44.C20; Union Pacific, 7,840. The stock market was again moderately active to-day, with the great hulk of the business done confined to tho granger stocks, and tho trusts were more auiet than at any time since their activity began, only Lead showing any special animation. There was a weak tone almost throughout the entire day, however, and prices to-night are generally lower than on Wednesday. The prices from London this morning were materially higher than our closing figures of Wednesday, showing that that center was not in sympathy with tho downward movement here, and it was reported that large lots of St. Paul had been bonght in thatmarket for American account. .This gave a better tone to the opening dealings, and first figures, while quite irregular, were generally higher, and the advances extended to i2 per cent, in the general list, while Jersey Central was exceptional with a gain of 1 per cent., at 111. which advantage it afterward increased a like amount. The Western railroad situation showed no improvement, however, and with littlo or nothing doing by commission people on the long side, and the temper of the room decidedly bearish, the advocates of lower prices were encourad to make another demonstration against the list. The leading "bear" was on the street, although he denied giving out any selling orders. Atchison was selected as the special point of attack, and the pressure against thestock was increased by liberal selling orders from Boston. The decline iu the stock did not cease until a loss of 2 per cent, had been scored, and the movement iu it did much to shake out weak holders of other stocks. St. Paul, Northwestern & Missouri Pacific came next to Atchison in point of weakness, and all of the stocks mentioned dropped over 1 per cent, before thi decline was checked. The liquidation among the smaller 'bulls'' assumed large proportions, but the impression became general before delivery hour that large lines of 'shorts" had been covered, and there was a change in the temper of the speculation, and in the last hour there was good buying in all portions of the list. The close was quiet but steady at the improvement over the lower prices. There was considerable pressure also upon Heading, but tho impression made was small, notwithstanding that the stock was the most active on the list. Of the other coalers. Jersey was strong and Delaware fc Hudson weak. The other stocks on the regular list, however, were quiet to dull, and their movements comSaratively insignificant. In the unlisted epartment Lead was still active, but there 'was no movement except in Sugar, which opened up a fraction and then declined over 2 per cent., but recovered and closed only a fraction lower. The final changes show considerable irregularity, but declines aro more numerous, anu Atchison lost 14 and Delaware .t Hudson 1 percent., while Jersey Central is up 2 per cent. Railroad bonds were dull and as a rnlo fluctuated within the narrowest limits, marked changes in quotations being few in number. The sales wero only $1,005,000, and only Heading fours displayed any special animation, furnishing $257,000 to the total. Norfolic & Western, Clinch Valley, inse 3, to VI. Indianapolis, Decatur & Western firsts 3, to U7. Government bouds were dnll and steady, tttate bonds were entirely neglected. There was less doing in wheat, and tho market, ruled quiet within a lower range of prices. Fluctuations wero not severe. July ruled somewhat irregular within a range of 2c, and closed about lower than "Wednesday. Tho deferred futures opened 34C lower, thru advanced VS4C a?ain, cased oil', and closed -2;34C lower than Wednesday. The decline was attributed principally to the weakness iu St. Louis, which market predicted largo receipts of new wheat by Monday, and reported two-thirds of that arriving now as grading No. 2. Keports from the Northwest were more favorable iu rcpard to crop prospects, and thU wan a weaketii ti feature. Cablo adviccM, however, were favorable to holders. Only a moderate inisiinvsd was transacted in corn, the range iieini narrow and most of the trading conlinf d to local operators. Tho feeling around t lie opening was Koniewh.it easier, initial tr:u!-H being 4C lower than the c!udu notations of "Wednesday, but as the session advanced a better tone wan developed and prices advanced 'c, iutluenced to a considerable degree by the good shipping demand. The market thn became easier, cbsiu a shade lower than Wednesday. Oats were slow and a shudo easier. Trading was fairly active on the market
for mes pork, but the feeling was unsettled and nervons, and prices fluctuated considerably within a narrow range. Early prices receded 10a5l2ioc. Later prices wero yauccd l7Dtfi?c, but finally settled back ;,,LC an,i clonal steadv. Only a fair business iras reported in tho lanl market, and the feeling was easy. Early in tho day prices ruled .OS.OTJc lower, but during the latter part of the session nioro steadiness prevailed, and prices rallied .02 V&.05C and closed quiet. A moderate
trado was reported in the market for shortrib sides. Tho feeling was easier early, and nrices rrwlrd .ftiU.(rc. Later the dec lino was recovered. Tho leading futures ranged as follows:

Dun & Co.'s weekly review of trade says: Business has been fairly maintained in volume, and is gradually improving in prospects. June has been a month of exceptionally largo transactions. Prices of commodities, in spite of the rise in some speculative mar kets, have, on the whole, fallen during the month about 2 percent., and are now hardly 12 per cent, above the lowest average ever recorded. Hut there are signs of substan tial improvement in the most important branches of industry. The monetary sit uation remains undisturbed. Nevertheless, tho stock market, by many considered an indicator of the future, has been sinking. Tho wars of Western, and to some extent of Eastern railroads have disheartened many investors and caused much selling. It is felt, too, that the rise stimulated by 6udden advances in trust stocks was not of a sub stantial character. But thero has been much confidence that the enormous halfyearly disbursements by tho government and by corporations would cause a new demand and advance in better securities, and while tho movement thus far m July has not answered expectations, holders are still hopeful. Reports from interior points are generally favorable. Collections are 110wuere seriously disturbed. The half-yearly return of failures shows a relativist- lirr increaso in New England than in anv other section about 28 per cent. auu re xx in tne transmississippi regions this side of the Rocky mountains apouxujpcr cent. Jn the Middle States tho increase has been but 4i Tier rwit thence to the Mississippi about 5 per cent., and at tho South about 3 per cent. Against a general increase of 8 per cent. in numbers, there is a decreaso of 3I4 per cent, in agcregato liabilities. The markets have not changed irrt.iir during the broken week. Wheat is about ic nigner. owing to accounts of injury ifom lumiiKru urongui auu neat in Dakota .and Minnesota, where heavy rains nave juMt improveu tne outlook considerably. Other crop prospects conti nun fivnr. able. Fork products are weaker, and dairy jiiuuuviT uc twining jurwam iu immense tiuaiititicK. so that the nrices am im pressed. Leather does not change, but the revised quotations of wool for tho 1st of July show an average, advance of about 1 cent per pound, and it is becominir a, serious question whether tho hopes of improvement in tho manufacture mav not bo defeated by an advanco 111 tho materi.il which may keep many of th mill idle. The price of cotton has advanced 3-BR. iu part beennso of scanty supply of desirable grades. Tho iron market remains Ktrong iu tone. Southern iron is still otlered in large quantities at lo.50 for No. 1, and the de mand lor luanmacturcd iron Is h activo. Sales of about 10,000 tons steel rail appear to have been on a basis of 23 at Eastern in ill.. The monetary prospect is clouded bv the exports of S17,:07.;;i0 gold, aud &1.133.4t'i4 itilver from New York alono siiico.Iune 1. In cousrtpif nee, the circulation of ill kinds has be'en reduced $17,(HX).0)0 in June. and. though tho aggregate i even now $S,000.ouo larger than a year ago, it is felt that a continued outgo in July would bo ant to causo pressure iu September. banks reported last week a snrplus of only
7,500,000, and the. actual surplus probably was not over $0,000,000, which is not a largo proportion for an activo fall demand. Exports fcr live weeks past exceed last vear's by 17 per cent. at, New York, whilo tho imports show an increase of 4 per cent. Unless grain exCorts aro hastened by the cut in eastound railroad rates, or foreign holders cease to realize on securities, the outgo of Sold may continue. Thus far the treasury isburseinents for the week have exceeded receipts by only $300,000, but will bo much larger for the week to come. The business failures number 202, as compared with 213 last week and 220 tho week previous. For tho corresponding week of last year the figures were 214. TRADE TS GEXKKAX.
