PERSONAL AND SOCIETY. Church "weddings are, to a certain extent, public allairs. Tho invitations aro generally unlimited, both tho hride's and groom's families having tho privilege of sending cards to tjieir entire acquaintanceship. t In most cases the church is nearly, if not quite, filled "with invited guests, and whatever space there is left is occupied by the army of tho uninvited. In the Catholic churches the bishop will not allow invitations to be issued for a church wedding, givin? as his reason that the church belongs to the people, and they have a right there at all times, which would not "bo tho case if any could be barred from entering for anysuch reason as their not happening to be friends of tho couple about to be married. Protestants do cot regard it in the same light exactly, but however it is, one thing is certain that invitation or no invitation there are some peopl who will be. ure to go. There is something especially interesting about a wedding, and no matter how much one is like another, there are fewer regrets to a wedding than to almost any other form of entertainment. A curious incident happened not many days ago. It was announced in a morning ana an evening paper that a certain wedding was to occur at a prominen t church on succeeding evening. Of course, if one had an invitation the date was known, and, if not, one might fairly judge that if guesta appeared upon the scene they were not asked, when, as in this case, the invitations were not out, and the date announced was a fortnight too earlv. About 7 o'clock persons were seen walking and driving toward the church; Mine even went to tne gates, which were closed, and tried them. The havy doors were fast, and there was no sign of life within. A number of the 7 o'clock arrivals remained in tho vicinity for a half-hour. A few went across the street and stationed themselves on the steps of the church to . await developments, and after an hour of patient waiting, and still no bride and groom, they departed, talking and wondering what was the matter. But few invitations break the quiet of : society, and friends Yrho have guests com- ' plain that there is positively nothing going ,on to which they can tako them. A reception occurs about once a week, and the rest of the time is occupied in a way which : must bo decided by the one entertaining. So, if one takes her tfuest to a company, it 'will be one which she heTself has arranged. The picnic season has opened, and almost any day wagon-loads of old and young can La seen driving toward the familiar spot. Quite a number of parties of young people who are studying art go out each week sketching, but for any of the fashionable entertainments they are not found in lndi- , anapolia just at present.
