PEBSOSAL AND SOCIETY. Among' the many social gatherings of the past week hare been the card parties of Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Heck, Mr. and Mrs. George Catterson. Mr. and Mrs. William Griffith, and Mr. -nd Mrs. E. S. Walker, receptions by Mrs. Henry S. Fraser, Miss Julia Brown. Mrs. Henry rieverin and Mrs. C. I. Fletcher, Mrs. W. J. Craig, Mrs. 'Alexander Spruance; dancing rarties given by Mr. and Mrs. John Koberts and daughters, Mr. and 3Irs. L. S. Ayres and daughter; a dinner by Mr. and Mrs. Noble C. Batlen luncheon by Mrs. Charles 8. Millard: several club meetings; an exhibit of Mr. William Forsythe'a pictures by the Art Association- Musically, there was Mrs. Flora M. Hunter's recital, assisted by Mrs. Anderson and Miss Thompson of Crawfordsville, Misses Doiiens, TVhittier, Stowell and Hunter; Mr. Clarence- A. Hongh's entertainment of leadings and music, at the First Baptist Church; a programme of music, at the Central Christian Church, Yankee supper, the Matinee Musicals concert, and the LyraCasino concert. There are a few invitations out for the coming week, and it is said there are eighteen rarties on the tapis, to take place between now and the 4tn of March. So much has been said about acknowledging invitations that a lady, who has given several large entertainments, has kept an account of the number of invitations sent out; the number of those who tent regrets or acceptance; those who sent neither and came, and those who did not attend. Three-fourths attended. Of those who did not go, 15 ner cent, did not send regrets or make any acknowledgment of the favor. Of this number, a few might have been out of town, and as this was about the same for each entertainment a fair estimate of the politeness of polite society may be made. Within the past few mnths there have ben more elegant dinner parties than for a number of years past. The presence of the Freaident-elect as well as the distinguished author General Lew Wallace has been the chief reason for the entertainments, and jet there have been quite a number of dinners where neither gentleman was a guest. Compare these magnificently appointed repasts, with fine linen, china, silver and cut glass, and a variety of - elaborate dishes eerved m courses, with the fourteenth-century table, when the guests ate off trenchers or flat pieces of .bread, or when eoups and sauces were served in hollow vessels and two perrons used the same dish the use of hollow plates for each person was rare in. the days of Lpnis XIV or compare the modern caterer or tine cook with the time when milady prepared the food for the household and took great pride in doing it. What a poverty of service that seems, when placed peside a modern dinner-table, where ach cover is not complete without two or three knives, several forks and a spoon for every dish, glasses for each kind of linuid refreshment. The changing of cloths during a dinner is rarely done in this country, though it is said that Queen Victoria originated that scheme . and now for a state dinner has three separate changes. She commences her dinner on a cloth of Saxony linen, continues it on an embroidered cambric cloth, and finishes on a paneled Russian table-cover, beautifully trimmed with lace. Luncheons here are sometimes served with the lace or drawn work covers, but rarely a dinner. It is also said that the changes of the cloth are so accomplished that they are not noticed, and for this the decorations are so arranged that they do not touch the table, but axe suspended from the chandelier. How goon such a sleight-of-hand performance will be attempted here remains to be seen. Among the elegant entertainers who have given dinners or luncheons during the week were Mr. and Mrs. Noble Butler and Mr. and Mrs. C. S.Millard, Ir. and Mrs. L. S. Avers, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Gates, Mr, and Mrs. Aaron Blair, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Stewart, Dr. and Mrs. Allen and others are among the list who eerved their friends to the best in the land. .Rubbers are something that it would seem every person would know if they were on the feet or not, and yet at a recent party a charming belle in a party-gown descended to the parlor witn hers on over a dainty pair of slippers, and she wondered what kind of' carpets thero were on the floor that would make it feel so neavy, and looking down beheld her feet. That can hardly be as bad as the first brides-maid at a wedding, who was dressed in the finest of tulle and all the paraphernalia that bridesmaids should
wear, who aiscovereo, wnen nan-way up the aisle, that she had forgotten to take off her rubbers, and, of course, she could not stop and take them off before the eyes of . that vast assemblage, and people who criticised her walk did not know for 6ome time the agony she endured trying to look her sweetest and endeavoring to walk and keep her feet well under her skirts. Mr. Bok 8svn,in his Literary leaves, published in the New York Daily Graphic, that an editor of one of the great magazines said to him, in reply to his qnestions, "Are personal introductions helpful to young authorsP , . "Don't go to a friend who knows the edj itor nnd get a letter of introduction; it will bore the friend, the editor, and eventually yourself. If you 6nggt the value of 'friend at court,' remember that the editorhas met this scheme a thousand times. 1. means that you ask him to make an exception of your case against hi judgment and this annovs him to begin with, it you want to sell a'iirxu a bill of goods you da not feel that you need a letter of introduction to the buyer, and an editor ii in ex actly this position of one who is alwayg buviug what he thinks is salable." There is a, good deal of truth in this ad vice of the magazine editor. The author'l best friend or his worst enemy is his manu script.
