THE INDIANAPOLIS JOUENAL, SUNDAY, DECEMBER 2. 1888-TWEI-VE PAGES.
PECSOXAL AND SOCIETY.
; Ko one can justly complain that Indianapolis society U not gay just at present. Everybody Is entertaining, and everbody is coin. There is an nxuaually largo number of visitor in tba city, frota all part of the country, and beside the numerous louche. tea and receptions for them, thera any camber of persons entertaining who have no especial suhI The old clubs hare reorganized, and easy tew ones bay been started, so that elab nights with many are frequent. Dancing nevtr had a greater popularity, and all tbe girls are belles and ail the rnea are beaux. Tbe largest and most elegant raxty of this and other seasons was that given by Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Martmdale, at the New Denison Ilotel. oo last Wednesday evening, and everything that could contribute to the beauty cf the party or entertainment of the gnesta waa done. Tbe arrangements were perfect to tbe minutest detail. Dinners are crowing in faror, and the week records many of them. The. family of General Harrison are abowered with Invitation?, and an assembly where their presence eaa be secured is anra to be a great success. Plans are being perfected for two, and perhaps three assemblies, and tbe cumber of partiea to be given are so many that it is doubtful if the winter will be hall long enooch to have them alt, unless gueita resort to the Washington style of going to more than one in an evening. It is considered quite an fait for ladies calling to send io cue card for each lady called upon. It ao happened one day last week that four ladies took a carriage and went calling. At one bouse where they stopped there were three in the family and two Tiaitors. Four, calling on fiVe xn&de twenty. Each contributed five cards, and the poor footman went io to inquire for the ladies and sent in twenty cards. Just think of it! At another tircs four went oat calling and at a bouse where there were three to call upoa. each sent !n one card, bat three corners of each card were turned down. If there had been fire io the family the question is, what would bare to be done, as long as there are not Ave cornera to a card? Personal Mention. lira. C B. wide attention long before they were collected io the pule volume which lies before roe, and which is called, from the initial selection, Afierwhiles. The volume contains by no means all cf his poems in fact, it does not contain some of those which have been most admired. A judgment, therefore, based solely on this on volume, would not be entirely accurate. But those which it does contain are characteristic, and from them some i !ei of the nature of his renins can be obtained. It ' said that the poems of James Whitcomb Kiley h.ve become in Indiana almost as familiar as household words. Tbe statement can easily be believed. The home-like theme, the quaint turns of erpretaion, the peculiar humor, the absolute fidelity to nature, all five them a marked local coloring, well calculated to please those whose life is there depicted. But their popularity is not eonfned to the author's native State. The local conditions cf life there are similar to those of the wol Northwest, and in reflecting the varying phases of that life truthfully and with unquestioned power ou? poet is gaining wide celebrity, and promises soon to become the chief creative genius in our literature."
