Active Easiness in Wheat, the General Situation ShowinjrNoMarkedChanjre. w 1 ConsideraLIe Activity in Corn, Accompanied fcj a Weaker Feeling Oit ActiYe PraTisions Qaiet, Irnil and Unchanged. JllOXEr, BONDS AND STOCKS. A Decrease of Activity at New York, Accompanied by m Weak Feeling?. NEW YORK, Sept. 21.-Odoney on call was ea?yatlls2 per cent., losing offered at 2 per cent Prime mercantile paper, 51 7i per cent. Sterling vicbacre was quiet but steady At $4.84 for sixty-day bills, and $1 S3 for demand. The total pales of stocks to-day were 232,245 shares, including the following Canada South" ern, 3,400; Delaware, Lackawanna & Western, 13,723; Erie, 7,723; Lake Shore, 29,500; Louisville & Nashville, 250; Missouri Pacific, 5,120; Northwestern, 9,200; Norfolk & Western preferred, G.C62; Northern Pacific preferred, 21,850; Oregon Transcontinental, 4,950; Reading, 14,100; Kichmoni & West Point, 4,300; St. Paul 27,004; Union PaciSc. 8,115; Western Union, 8,743. The stock market was much less active to-day, the sales being the smallest for more than two weeks, and the tone of the de alines was again feverish and woak, though the final changes are about equally divided between gains and losses. There was evidently disposition on the part of operators to await farther developments in several directions before entering into now ventures, and the day' transactions were entirely free from excitement of any kind. To many the dullness and apathy were quite as surprising as the wide and rapid fluctuations of a week aeo, the range of values being, in most of the list, within very narrow limits. The grangers took a secondary place in the speculation, while the- Vanderbilu were most conspicuous by rMrn ef .their activity and strength la the fa.ee of the wesk tone which characterized the general hat. The rie in those shares waa aided by the reports of the harmonious feeling at the trunk-lme meeting, but the street also believes that the purchases are largely for inside account The specially weak spots in the list to-oav were tho Southern stocks and Northern Pacific, and the "bears" used the reports of the spread cf yellow fever in that region against the stocks of the Southern roads. Louisville & Nashvilli being particularly vulnerable. Northern Pacific was sold by London, and in ail probability by the defeated party at the last election, though tho illness of Mr. Wright had a depressing influence upon the stocks. The coal stocks and the Gould stocks were quite dull throughout the day, but New England was feature, being aetive anl strong on buying for Boston account, the latest story being that there is to be ft contest At the next election, and the buying' is to obtain ilbe balance of power. The opening figures were rery little chsnjed either way, but Louisville & Nashville was down J per cent. The market made some alight advances in the first few minutes, but soon began to yield, and under the lead of St. Paul and Northern Paclfio preferred material declines were established in the first hour. - Lake Shore then eame to the front, and the market took on a better tone, recovering somewhat The movement was aided by the strength in New England, after noon, but culminated by 1 P. M. Louisville & Nashville again displayed marked weakness and rest of the l$X responded, losing all the prevlocs advantage. Miifonri Pacific became the special weak spot in the last hour, and the markes finally closed quiet but weak, and at irexeeet losses ul 1 in Louisviiie cc rtasnvme, and 1 per cent, in Northern Pacific, were for fractional amounts only. Transaction in railroad bonds were very small to-day, aggregating only &J24.0GO, and the tone was again heavy, though the final changes in Quotations are somewhat irregular. There was no feature whatever to the dealings, and no animation anywhere in the list. Government bonds were dull but firm. State bonds were dull and steady. Closing quotations were: Pour per ct bonds. -123 Kansas & Texss.... 124 Fonr rer cent. cour-12iJ78 Laiehr. 3s eta n 18 youraadah'f peret.107 1. Northwest furnishing toe principal "bull" material Early trading was at about yesterday's closing prices, and although Lirerpool quoted 4e Id wer prices for spot and futures tending down, operators were not disposed to jell on this news, those nayinr done eo tig past day or two tumor, in most instances, jeeu compelled to pay higher pricea to get the whest back. Later there was a sharp advance, infloeacad by rood buying, "bborta" coTered and prices gradually sold ud ljaljo abort the inside figurej. The advance brought out free off trine, which prevented the market from further adraoclng for the time being, at least, and the closing was about 1 3 Jo. higher than yosterday. Considerable interest was manifeste'd in corn, and trading was quit active at times, the feeling developed being tnuea weaker. October recaivad the most attention, a heavy pressure being brought te bear oa this month, and the foalm was weak witn tns exception of a short period after the opening. The market opened a shade under the dosing prices of yesterday, advaaced iic, became weaker and firradialiy sold oCflJ all, reacted ic, and closed with the near futures lalje lower. May delivery closed i&lc higher than yester day. Cables were dull, whish inspired a weaker realm r abroad, and in the home markets also, a prominent operator was reported as sailing free Jy, and this, together with the sales of the local cruvrd. in absence of any outside support, created weakness. Trading in oats was quite spirited; May delivery, especially, ruled un considerable activity. There were frequeol ales of September, and a fair business In Octo ber delivery ensued. Considerable increase in the offerings was witnessed, but they met with ?uite free buyine by local operators, and, though rom the start there were indications of weakness, a ood demand held priees very elose to yesterday's latest figures. There was some weakness in provisions on yellow fever, with the market, aside from this feature, quiet and dull most of the time. October pork opened IL'ic lower, which proved to be the lowest price of the day. It subsequently reacted to $14.70, elostng where it did last night. January closed 12Jc lower than yesterday.
