Baltimore, Oct. 3, It can be stated autnoriiively that tbo Baltimore & Obio railroad people have at last refused to put up any more money to run the telegraph company, and Fii4ay saw the last financial connection between thm two concerns. The railroad people have formally notified the officials of the telegraph company that on and after Oct. 1 they need not expect ny assistance from them. Some weeks ago, and just before the culmination of the syndicate scheme for the tranfer of the railroad franchise, k meeting of the higber officials of the telegraph company was held in Baltimore, with closed doors. The speculative world was all agog abont the matter, but nothing definite ever leaked out of what transpired on that occasion, tt is now alleged that this meeting was called to Jiscuss the manner of disposing1 of the telegraph lines, and it was then that President Bates conceived the idea of securing enough capital to purchase a controlling interest, and, with the system retained under his management, make it a formidable and at the sam time a profitable rival of the Western Union. To purchase it outright would require $3,500,000. while a controlling interest would cost $2,000,000. It is asserted that Mr. Bates secured the co-operation of several large capitalists in his scheme, and to prove to them that the expenses could be materially reduced without interfering with the efficiency of the service throughout the country, a generat pruning of salaries was inaugurated. The whole situation is an interesting one. and puts a new phase on the telegraph, and, in fact, the entire Baltimore & Obio deal. Aagnst Accidents. The official statement of the accidents oc--enrring on railroads in the United States in the month of August, published in the Iiailroad Gazette of Sept. SO, shows that the accidents were alarmingly nu merons and the loss of life serious, the record showing a total of 137 accidents, in which 129 persons were killed and 23 injured. Sixty-five of these accidents .were caused through collisions, sixty-four from derailment of trains and eight from causes unknown. The Gazette says: "Bad as was July, August exceeds it, the Chatswortb disaster swelling the number killed to almost double the July record, while the injured are nearly a fourth ' more numerous. Unquestionably the widespread activity in business, making traffic everywhere heavy, is fully evidenced on the dark side of the picture as well as on the bright. It is noticeable .though, that the passengers killed were all th victiixa -f nna wrck. that at Ohatsworth. ' In fact, the accidents fo passenger trains on rood track are few indeed, and what there are, largely the. result of 'negligence in operating, thus confirming the well-known fact that in track and rolling stock our best lines have reached a very high state of perfection. This should not be forgotten in considering the records of the country as a whole, which show up our deficiencies so vividly." ' Throws Down the liars. The general passenger agents of Indianapolis roads yesterday received the following notice from the vice-chairman of the Central Traffic Association "It having transpired that notwithstanding the prohibition to the contrary, a number of lines in this association have either ' accepted the tickets or orders of their Eastern connections for the harvest excursions of Ang. B0 and Sept. 20. such lines claiming to be unable to control the matter, this is to empower all lines in the association to accept the tickets or orders of their connections for the harvest excursion starting from initial association noints on Oct. 11, proximo, subject to the conditions prescribed by the association as to rates, destination, form of ticket, and limitations for going and returning passage." . Accepting th Conditions. Pittsburg, Oct 3. The Wabash Western and Wisconsin Central lines have accepted the contitions of the trunk lines and the roads in the Central Traffic Association as to the exchange of passenger business. The only important lines which hsve not yet accepted the conditions referred to are the Atchison. Topeks & Santa Fe, Chicago, Bock Island & Pacific, and the Chicago & Alton. T.ocat and Stats Nates. Thomas Peek, district passenger agent of the Bee-line, is so ill as to be confined to bis bed. f The Evansville & Terr Haute stockholders will, on the 17th of this month, be paid a quarterly dividend of 1 per cent. The stockholders of the Lake "Erie & Western road hold their annual meeting in Bloomington to-morrow for the election of officers. The Bee-line and the Pennsylvania line to-day restore the unlimited rate from Indiananolis to New York to $19, the ten-days' notice of an advance expiring yesterday. C. A. Allen, train-master of the B-line, Indianapolis division, will, on the loth of this month, retire from that position. Who is to Pe his successor has not been definitely decided upon. The Indianapolis, Decatur & Springfield management annonnew that, beeinning with to-day, they will sell 1,000 mile tickets at $20. This road has until now been selling 1,000-mile tickets at $25. E. W. Sloane. general agent of the American Exnress Company, yesterday went to Turkey Lake on a fishing expedition, and F. C. Fargo, superintendent, went to Kankakee on the same mission. The impression prevails with those who understands the eitnation as regards a receivership for the C H. & D.. that the court will appoint one, and that John Carlisle, Cincinnati, will be the receiver. There is the best official authority for stating that the President pays a round sum for his Pullman service on his trip, making the same arrangement that Raymond or any other tourist party does for the service. The heavy traffic over the C, I., St. L. & C. road is highly satisfactory to the train-men, who are paid on the mileage basis. Freight eorductors, most of them, last month, made $110; the brakemen. $33. D. T. Bacon. Western superintendent of the Baltimore & Ohio Telegraph Company, yesterday turned the office over to his successor, L. Lemon. On the 1st of this month a general cutting down of wages took effect. ' . The roads over which the B. & O. Kankakee Dispatch operates are so pleased with the work the line is doing that they will at once bnild 1.000 cars to put into the line of the Baltimore & Ohio: standard, 45.000 pounds capacity. M. E. In galls, president of the C I. St. L. & C, is in the city. He is accompanied by Wm. Oreen, whose title is assistant to the president His duties will be to examine vouchers and purchase eqnipment.supplies, etc. for the company. A. T. Thomas, treasurer of the Lake Erie & Western road, was in the city yesterday. He states that the general officers are in hope that their new building will be so far advanced that they can remove their headquarters to Indianapolis about the 15tb of next month. Will French, who. five years ago, left the position of telegraph operator at a country station, on the C. I.. St. L. & C. road, to go to the Pacific slope, has made over $100,000 in real estate speculations, that sum being deposited to bis credit in the banks of California. 4 The Ohio Southern road is hauling four 'indred car-loads of Jackson coal out of the luines daily, and the number would reach six hundred per day could the cars be had. General Manager Henderson is looking around for more cars to handle this rapidly-increasing business. In the month of September there was received and forwarded at Indiananolis over the several roads centering here a total of 100.731 cars, of which number 77.515 were loaded ears. The - corresponding month. 1S8G, a total of 94.4S7 ear were bandied, of which number 74,959 were loaded cars. In the month of September there were handled at the city freight depots of the Pennsvlvania lines a tonnage of 27,023,294 pounds, representing 2,853 cars; against 25.012 643 pounds in the Corresponding month in 1886. representing 2.627 rare. Increase in number of pounds handled this year, 2.610.645 pounds; increase in number of ears loaded and unloaded this year, 226 cars. All roads in this territory yesterday resumed saie or tickets reading over the vv abash & Western road. The Chicago & Alton is the only road outside of the non-commission-paying lines this side of the river. This road virtually declares that it will look: out for itself, as heretofore. The report that the Eastern lines yielded several points to induce the Wabash Western to fall into line is flatly denied. The receipts from sales of tickets at the Union Depot last month exceeded those of the corresponding month, laSG, $11,643.65. ana at all the outside offices there was a marked increase in receipts from sales of tickets this rar, as ompared with those of September, 1886. the Pennsvlvania lines at their up town office telling 5.230 more of tickets, and at their South Illinois-street office nearly $2,000 more. ents, in New York city; Oct 11, the Roadmaster's Association of America, at Cleveland, O.; Oct. 12. general time convention in New York city; Oct 19, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, in Chicago, and on the same date the Brotherhood of Railway Brakemen, in Binghamton. N. Y. At all these conventions Indianapolis roads will be well represented. Competition for the lumber traffic out of Michigan City is very sharp between the Lake Erie & Western and the L. N., A. & C. roads. In the month of September the former hauled out of there for Indianapolis and other southern points 364 cars, the L., N. that unless they put a stop to their ticket agents cutting rates between the points named there will be a rate war which will cut to the quick, the Bie Four being determined to hold the business which rightfully belongs to it General passenger agents were greatly surprised yesterday over the announcement that the Wisconsin Central and the Milwaukee & Northern roads had wheeled into line on the non-payment-of-commissions question. The two roads, especially the former, have been the most bitter opponents of the movement in the past What has been done to effect such a change is a problem in passengermen's circles. In the month of September there arrived and departed at the Union Depot 3,281 trains, 223 of them special trains. On these trains were hauled 25.840 ctts. This is one of the largest month's business done in the Union Depot since records have been kept of the train movement, which has been for some years. Of the 1.529 regular trains which arrived, but thirty-four were late during the month, which is a remark able record. V. T. Malott, general manager of the Union Railway Company, so appreciated the excellent work done by Snperintendent Whitcorab. Marshal Manning and their assistants, at the Union depot, during the immense travel occasioned by me &tate fair, the Grand Army of the Republic movement and the Presidential reception, that on behalf of the company he returned them thanks for their untiring and vigilant efforts, whicb was evidenced in the fact that not a person was injured, even scratched by the numerous trains moving to and fro in the midst of the large crowds of people, and there was no detention of trains. The comic papers are lending a hand in favor an early solution of the car-coupler problem. The main cartoon in a recent issue of the Judge was a picture of an alleged meeting of railway presidents, in which an imaginarv resolution was adopted approving the action of the Master Car Builders' Association for "the abandonment of the deadly link and pin," As the car-builders themselves have not yet formally voted on this matter bv letter-ballot, the announcement is a little premature. It is stated that the vote of the Master Car Builders, so far as received, indicate the adoption of the late convention's action by at least'a two-thirds vote on the coupler question. General and Miscellaneous. The real object of President Pullman's visit East is said to be to gather in the Baltimore & Ohio line of sleeping cars. Last week nine miles of track was laid on th Dulnth & Manitoba extension of the Northern Pacific road in thirty-four hours. It is claimed that the railway now . building across the Andes to connect Buenos Ayres and Valparaiso will shorten the journev between England and Australia fully two week?. Owing to the possibility that the air brake will cot operate promptly in cases of emergency, the Boston & Albany road is equipping its passenger engines with steam driver brakes as well, thinking it a further safeguard against accidents. Massachusetts roads, most of them, on Oct. 1 closed their fiscal year, and all lines show a handsome increase in earnings this year except the Boston & Providence, which suffered through its bridge accident, and the Fitchburg road, which had bad times with the floods on its western division. The chief surgeon of tha Missouri Pacific road reports that he has upwards of 20.000 cases a year on the Missouri Pacific system which require medical or surgical aid. He has a perfect system of making reports by which the details of every ease treated is made known. About 25 per cent of the accidents come from employes making car couplings. The A., T. & S. F., last Saturday, drove -the last spike in their track, which gives them aline into Denver of their own. The New York financial pipers shpw a disposition to bar the A., T. & S. F. on its aggressive policy. The Indicator says. "The. Atchison people have tickled the vanity of Boston by promising it a big railroad system which should dwarf other systems in extent and capitalization Millions of dollars have been put into the enterprise blindly, and without consideration of what might be the natural outcdme of the Atchison policy." Yesterday the trains oo the St Paul, Minneapolis & Manitoba railway commenced running from St. Paul, the head of navigation on the Mississippi river, to Fort Benton, the head of navigation on the Missouri river, distance 1.030 miles. This brings the track to within about fortv miles of the Great Fall3 of the Missouri River, which will be reached in a few davs more. The one hundred miles between Great Falls and Helena will soon be covered, when the Manitoba company will own s.n unbroken line from St Paul to Helena, nearly 1,200 miles, the construction ot which has been pushed at a rate unparalleled in the history of railways.
