AFFAIRS OF TITd RAILWAYS. Freight Traffic Continue Heavy. . The train records show that the movement of car over Indianapolis lines last week was unusually heavy, and limited, it is stated, jnst now, by tha ears which can be commanded,, there being a call in all directions for cars, both for local and for through business. The train records show that seven more loaded cars were received and forwarded at Indianapolis last week than in the week preceding, 409 more than In the corresponding week in 1S8G, and three more than in the corresponding week in 1885. Shipments east-bonnd are not as heavy as in the corresponding we.ek last year, there being less grain going to interior points. Export business, however, is up to the usual average, and promises to be heavier the present month than in September. The West-bound tonnage is heavy beyond parallel, and seems to be increasing; at least, the demand for cars is so ereat that the roads are even sending empty ears East to load with west-bound freights. The shipments of anthracite coals are becoming heavy, as well as of merchandise. It is noticeable that the tonnage of railroad supplies west bound is sot as heavy as a few weeks ago. Nortb-and-south roads are doing an excellent business, the J., M. & L last week handling more loaded ears than in any week in the last four years. Traffic over the G, L, St L & C. is exceedingly heavy both ways, the movement of empties over the line being unusually light. With all roads local business is good and above the usual average at this season of the year. The shipments of live stock are increasing, and a heavy fall traffic is looked for of this character. Below is given the number of cars received and forwarded at this point in the week endine October 1 as compared with the corresponding weeks in 1886 and 1885:

Alleged Discrimination. Under the provisions of the Inter State law Wilson & Boyd, of this city, who handle large quantities of grain, have brought suit . in the United States District Court against the Indianapolis. Decatur & Springfield railroad company for $6,000 which tbey claim they have i lost through an order issued by the general freizhtaeent of said road to bis agents one year ago, in which he instructed them to ferward no grain to this firm from their respective stations unless, the charges were prepaid to Indianapolis. This order they state in their complaint so
iiscriminates against them that it has practi
cally driven them off of this road. They further
ask that the court issue an order compelling the
general freight aeent to rescind the instruction to his agents above alluded to, as it discriminates gainst them and forces them if they do any business on the road to do it under an assumed name, which is injurious to their business and to their credit. Judge Wood basset Oct. 10 as the day on which he will hear the case. Wilson & Boyd allege that they are thus discriminated against out of spite on the part of the officials sf that road, who also operate the L, D. & S.

Coaches. F. E. Hayne has been appointed cashier of the Chicago & Rock Island road, vice J. F. Phillips, promoted to the position of assistant secretary and treasurer ot the company. D. R Patterson has been appointed assistant general manager of the Chicago & Eastern Illinois road. Robert Spencer succeeds him as purchasing agent of the road. On the first of this month Mr. Iglehart severed his connection with the Chicago & Northwestern, and will to-day assume the duties of tommissioner of the Chicago freight bureau. The management ef the Chicago & Indiana eoal road has purchased the sole right to operate in the United States the Carpenter Electrie Brake, a European invention which is used extensively in foreign conn tries. The Northwestern lines are now just in the fix that the Eastern trunk lines werea fewyearsago, cpoiling for a fight, and if there is not an ugly rate war it will be because the roads have grown wiser as they have grown older. West-bound business over all lines is simply immense. Last week the Bee-line brought went 1,105 loaded cars, and the C, St. L & p. 1,126, and the west-bound movement over the other lines was proportionately heavy. A large per cent, of the men discharged from the shops of the L., N. & A.C. road, on the first ot last month will resume work to-day. The company proposing to build some new works as well as make general repairs to their entire equipment. Riehmond mourns the collapse of the IvesSraynor syndicate more than does Terre Haute or Cincinnati, as it was expected that Richmond was to have another railroad, the C, II. & D. building to Jonesboro, there connecting with the G, W. & -M. The western division of the Indianapolis & St. Louis road will show an increase in earnings of 15 per cent, last month, when compared with the earnings of the corresponding period of 1886. It now looks as if the C. C. C & L would not be called upon to pay any deficit. The lines of the Pennsylvania Company west of Pittsburg continue to show very handsome earnings, and for the eight months ending Aug. SO. 1887. show a surplus above all liabilities of $779,947, being a gain over corresponding period of 1886 of $953,711, or nearly one million dollars. It is quite evident that the Southern roads are to make a fight for some of the pleasure travel the coming winter, being determined that the transcontinental lines shall not get all. The shortening up of the time of the Queen & Crescent route is a preliminary step, and doubtless rates will soon receive some' attention When the L.. N. A. & C. complete their extension from Bainbridge to Brazil they will have as short a route between the block coal mines and Chicago as has the Chicago & Indiana eoal road, and will at once become a sharp competitor for the coal traffic which goes from the Clay county mines to Northwestern points. There were transferred over the Belt road in September 56.706 cars, against 40.011 the corresponding month in 1886, against 53 875 in 1SS5, against 38.391 in 1884, against 32.181 in 18S3 and 24.989 in 1882. From the above statement it will be seen that the traffic over the Belt road has more than doubled in the last five years. There is official authority for saying that there is not the least grounds for the rumors afloat in New York to the effect that the C, I. St. L. & C. road is to be leased to the Illinois Central with a guarantee of 5 per cent, on the stock. The fact is that the Big Four next year will take its place among the 6 per cent, per annum dividend-paying roads. The monthly report of J. B. E. Eckroan for September shows that he weighed 3.117 cars, Which were supposed to be overloaded, the actvat weight being 103,551.850; weight given by shippers, 94,526,375 pounds, a gain to the railroad companies by reweighine of 9.025.476. during the month there was 4.716,261 pounds of platform freights weighed on which the shippers' weight was 3,839,738. a gain to the railroad sompaniet through reweighing of 876,523 founds. The fact that the Wabssh Western has wheeled into line on the parznent-of-commis-sions question makes it the more probable that an ogly rate-war will be inaugurated by the roads between Chicago and Kansas City, and in the end further west It is evident that the Missouri Pacific and the Wabah'Westrn are inclined to turn the cold shoulder on the Chicago A Alton road, and, if they do so, the latter in turn will open a rate-war. as General Passenger-agent Charlton is said to be more 'in ever determined that the Ciiicago & Alton ,
shall have its full abate of the businees, by fair
means, if possible; if not, he will resort to rate-
cutting, both deep and in earnest.
It is said that coaches of more roads were
handled at the Union Depot on Saturday last
than in anv day in the history of the depot.
Coaches belonging to the Boston & Albany, the Lake Shore, the New York Central, the Penn
sylvania road nroner. the N. Y.. P. & O.. the
N. Y. C. & St. It., the Hocking Valley, the Chi
cago & Atlantic were among the number. 1 rinse
coaches were run through for the veterans at St.
Louis, and Friday and Saturday were coming
bacK.
The fact that the railroads era striving for busiuess at half rates, or even less, to the utter
disregard of tariff sheets, suggests that tae way
to give these tariffs value and permanence is to
reduce the regular rates to a level more nearly approximating the figures at which the railroads
are striving to get business, lt is suggestea that if the roads would make two cents per mile
their passenger rate in all directions and any distance, the results might be more satisfactory
to them and the public as well.
The C. H. & I. train which on Saturday
brought the Duckworth Club up from Cincinnati,
although delayed by the engine of an east-bound
train breaking down, madela run which will ao
to go on record as hard to beat, engine No. 3 hauling five passenger cars and a parlor car
from Liberty to the Union Depot, Indianapolis, in eighty-two minuies, stopping at two railroad crossings and once to take water, which reduces
the actual running time down to about a mile a minute the entire distance outside the city
limits. The lumber men are complaining of the diffi
culty to get cars to handle their business promptlr. Doubtless there is no class of busi
ness men that suffers more than the buyers and
sellers of lumber from anything that happens to
create a scarcity of railway cars. Their busi
ness is such that it must be done, if done at all
by rail, as most of it is, in car-load lots, and un
like many other large shippers, they can do nothing in the way of filling their orders until
the cars which are to carry the lumber are "set in" on their own side tracks. In a quiet manner a general movement is
making to do away with a large per cent of wortt on railroads on the Sabbath. A number
of roads have expressed a desire to take a firm stand in this matter if competing lines will favor such a movement. The Bee-line eiehteen
months ago issued an order to the effect that as
little work should be done as possible on the Sabbath, especially in yards, and it has an excellent effect on their men and their business
has not Buffered thereby. General-manager
Beckley, on the Cincinnati, Wabash & Michigan, does not allow a wheel to turn on that road on Sunday, and when the Ives-Staynor syndicate
proposed to take control of the road he distinctly gave them to nnderstand that should he con
tinue general manager of the property the Sabbath must be observed. The Weekly Tele
grapher says: From straws which we have
been able to see firing about in the air, and
from a positive Knowledge we have of the right and public favor of the proposition, we believe that Sunday labor will soon be relegated to the rear. The running of Sunday trains, we be
lieve, in ordinary cases, is a useless expense, and an injustice to employes, that is fast being
found out and abandoned.
THE CROP ESTIMATE. Probable Yield of Corn and Other Cereals In the West and Northwest. . Chicago, Oct, 2. The following crop sum
mary will appear in this week's issue of the
Farmers' Review: The reports of our crop cor-
resnondents this week, summarized, give the
following averages: v Illinois Twenty-three counties report an estimated yield ot corn of 1S bushels per acre; of oats, 30 1-3 bushels; of potatoes, 33 J bushels, with only 7 per cent, of old corn on band.
Indiana Ten counties estimate the yield of
corn at 21 bushels per acre; yield of oats, 32J bushels; potatoes, 19 bushels, with 8 per cent, of old corn on hand.
Ohio Sixteen counties estimate the yield of
corn at 32 bushels per acre: average yield of
oats, 34 bushels; potatoes, 41 busbals, with 8 2-3
per cent, ot old corn on nana. Missouri Fourteen counties estimate the ties that need forcing may be trained upon yield of corn at 36 bushels per acre; oats, 36 bushels; potatoes, 59 bushels, with 5 per cent, of old corn on hand. Iowa Eighteen counties estimate the yield of corn at 30 bushels per acre; spring wheat. 12 bushels: oats. 33 bushels: potatoes, 54 bushels, with only 3i per cent, of old corn on hand. Kansas Ten counties estimate the yield of corn at 13 13 bushels per acre: oats, 28 bushels; potatoes, 47 bushels, with 5 1-3 per cent, of old corn on band. Nebraska Seven counties estimate the yield ef corn at 20 bushels per acre; spring wheat, 12 bushels; oats, 33 i bnshel-s; potatoes, 68 bushels, with 7 per cent, of old corn on hand. Minnesota Nine counties estimate the yield of corn at 25 bushels per acre; spring wheat, 10 2 3 bushels; oats, 31 bushels; potatoes, 92 bushels. Dakota Sixteen counties estimate the yield of corn at 50 bushels per acre; spring wheat, 14 bushels; oats, 31 3-5 bushels, and potatoes 109 "bushels. No old corn. Kentucky Twelve counties estimate the yield of corn at i9 bushels, and report other crops as fallows: Oats, 22 bushels; potatoes, 19 bushels; 8 per cent, of old corn on hand. Copious and general rains during the week have generally improved the fall feed and put the ground in fine condition for the fall plowing and seeding. . Last Weekly Report or the Signal Office. Washington, Oct 2. The Signal Office today issued its last weekly crop bulletin until the beginning of the next crop year. The bulletin issued to-day says of last week's weather: During the week ending Oct. 1 the weather has been cooler than nsual in all agricultural districts east of the Rocicy mountains, the average daily temperature ranging from three to six degrees below the normal in the central valleys, except from Virginia to Florida, where the temperature was but slightly below the normal. The temperature for the season from June 1 to Oct, 1 was slightly below the normal on the Atlantic coast, and from New England westward to the Missouri valley; and it was slightly warmer than usual in the Ohio and central Mississippi valleys, and generally throughout the Southern States, the average daily excess or deficiency generally amounting to less than two degrees. The rain fall for the week has been in excess throughout the greater portions of the cotton and tobacco regions, and over the winter wheat regions, from Ohio westward to Missouri and Iowa. In the regions that have suffered most from drought, covering the greater portion of Illinois, Southern Indiana, eastern Iowa and the greater portion of Missouri, the rain-fall for the week has been largely in excess. Less than the usual amount of rain fell along the south Atlantic coast, in northern New England, western New York. Nebraska and the northwestern portion of low a. The large deficiency In the rainfall for the season continues in the central valley, but this deficiency has been reduced during the week in the wheat and corn regions of the Northern States. Over the greater portion of the region the deficiency has exceeded ten inches. In the tobacco regions of Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee, the deficiency in rain-fall for the season generally amounts to less tbon five inches, except in the extreme west portions of Tennessee and Kentucky, where the deficiency in rain-fall for the season exceeds ten inches. The only States reporting an excess of ram-fall for the season are Pennsylvania, Maine. Southern New York, the west portions of Kansas and Nebraska, northern Texas and eastern Colorado. During the week the weather has been favorable for the harvesting' of cotton in the States west of the Mississippi and in the States in the extreme eastern portion of the cotton regions, while cool wetitiier has injured cotton and other growing crops in Mississippi Frost occurred in the northern portion or the tobacco region of the Ohio Valley, and along the Atlantic coast as far south as Virginia, which probably resulted in some injury to the crops. These frosts were anticipated and warnings were issued by this office giving timely notice of the occurrence. The rains which have occurred during the week in the winter-wheat regions will Drove of especial value, as the sewing of wheat has been delayed in that section owing to the continuance
of te drought.
