A musical and literary entertainment was given at the txmth-etreet Baptist Church cn last Tuesday , evening. The special features of the programme wera oolored pictures produced by Mr. C. P. Jacobs, with his magic lantern, the recitation "Night before Christmas," by Miss Amy Jacobs; the Quartette, "The Bridge that was Burned at Chats worth," and "Rock f Ages" by Fred Alsen and the recitation 'King Robert of Sicily." by Miss Katie Eden. The yonng ladies of the Second Presbyterian Church will tender a reception to Mr. Taiko-Hideyoshi. ft Japanese nobleman, at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Osgood, on North Meridian street, on Tuesday evening. The nobleman is accompanied by an interpreter and three attendant. The ladies will have tea-room, furnished in Japanese style, where the visitor may quaff the drink symbolic of the Orient, and a souvenir cup and saucer will be given to each. In order to meet the expense necessary to the reception, a number of fancy articles will be offered for sale. It is the intention to have the reception as handsome as any private one ever given here. The ladies of the Free Kindergarden and Children's Aid 8ociety will give their tea. which was postponed from last Thursday, on Friday afternoon and evening of this week, at th residence of Mrs. Charles E. Kregslo. on North Illinois street. A short musical and literary programme wiil be given, and there will . be candy aud fruit for all. The social event of the week was the party given on Wednesday evening bv Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. MoDonald, at their borne. No. 58-4 North Meridian street. The inclement weather which prevailed during the entire day cleared at night, and the full moon light made the evening most propitious. Tbore was a large attendance of representative people from the city and number of guests from abroad. The floors wera covers 1 with white, and the entire floral decorations were of green. The corners were filled with plants reaching nearly to the ceiling, and the pleasing arrangement made them visible even when tha ro ms were crowded to their utmost capacity. The mantels were banked with dedicate ferns of all varieties, and tha piano was decorated with small palms. In the library punch waa served all the evening from tha celebrated bowl, which waa presented to Mrs. McDonald by tha United States Senators, while Mr. MeDon&M was ft member of that body. The costumes were rich and elegant, that of , the hostess attracting particular attention. It was of mahogany red velvet, the skirt of striped brocade, and the waist and train of plain. Ornaments of gold bead passemen ttrie, with beads pendant, gave the costume its only decoration, except the rich lara at the n-ck and sleeves, and rare diamonds worn. She carried a bouquet of Marechal Neil roses. The attendance was characteristic of the gatherings held here some tea or fifteen years ago, when whole families were always invited, parents, sons and daughters enjoyine the same pleasure, and on that account the party of Wednesday was particularly enjoyed by the guests.
