The face that stands out upon its surface is the most faithful likeness extant of the immortal President The poise of the head is magnificent The wind has blown the hair roughly over the left ear, and a forelock across a portion of the
left aide of the forehead, but the latter, loft
proportions appear fully on tno ngnt inereisi a solemn look In the eyes, and a dignified air to I I iue waoie race mat reioiten a sense ot grave reeponsibilitv. ' The chin is firm, and there is a droop to the lower lip-, bnt it does not detract from the countenance, as in most of tne photo graphs that have been taken of Lincoln. Altogether the picture adds to one's sense of the greatness of the man. Mms photograph was taken under circum stances of peculiar interest. Ptesident Lincoln was passing through New York on his way to his inauguration. Accompanied by three gen tlemen, the barouche in which the party rode was making its way slowly down 13 roadway. The crowds packed the streets as far as the eye could reach, When the barouche reached the building at Nos. 501 and 563 Broadway, near Prince streets, then occupied by the Merchants' and Manufacturers Bank, the crowd became so dense that the horses carae to a full stop. Mr. Lincoln rose to his feet to respond to the acclamations of the multitude. The pause was only for a moment, hut that precious moment was seized by a Dhotographer named Saunders. A large camera, thrust quickly out from an upper window, bore squarely upon the Presidents face, and the likeness was secured. The camera was a large one used for taking views of buildings. Saunders was an odd char acter, and 6aems to have thrown the photograph away, as D'Orsay, who succeeded to his apart ments, afterwards found it while raking in a heap of rubbish. He has preserved it jealously ever since. It is pronounced by good judges the most faithful picture of Lincoln they have ever seen. Especially does it bring out the solemn earnestness of the great President. This photo graph is tacked to the wall. Close by the side of it is one of Sartain's steel engravings of Dan lei Webster, which Mr. DUrsay bought as a memorial of a funny adventure he had, in 1852, with the great statesman. In the spring of that year Mr. D'Orsay'eJduties had taken him to Duxbury, Mass.. to decorate the Congregational Church there. Finding himself out of chalk he sent his boy after a piece. While his hoy was absent a man of swarthy com plexion entered. He wore his pantaloons in his boots, and his general appearance suggested he had been at work in a garden. He asked so many questions about the work that D'Orsay felt bothered, but he was struck by the intelh gence displayed and wondered at it, as it was out of keeping with his visitor's general ap pearance. Finally, in response to a question of Mr. Webster, he said he was waiting for" his boy's return, as he wanted him to hold his chalk line. "Oh, I will hold it for yon," said the unknown, and suiting the action to the word, be took bold of one end of it and went the rounds of the building, snapping it obediently wherever D'Orsay desired him. After they had made the rounds one of the church committee came in. Seeing Mr. Webster, his hat was off in a second, and addressing him, he asked him when he returned from Washington. It had not before occurred to Mr. D'Orsay that Web ster worshiped in the Duxbury Church, and when he realized that he had had the great ex pounder of the Constitution as an assistant ia snapping a chalk line he felt small. Threatened witb a Coal Famine. New York, Jan. 8. The situation in regard to tne coal-handlers strike is gradually growing worse, and the outlook is serious. L. R. Bar rett, agent for the Lehigh Valley Coal Com pany, said this afternoon that no business is being done by his company, and that if the strike continues a week or ten days there will be a coal famine. He said that the companies did cot propose to give in to the strikers, and as to wages, the men have been able to make from $65 to $110 a month. When asked if, by the transfer of cars on floats, something of a supply could be furnished the city, he shook his head and said there were not, probably, twenty-five floats in the harbor of the kind necessary, and that their capacity was only three hundred tons each, Eet&il dealers in the city have advanced the price fifty cents a ton, and the coal-yards are, as a rule, only scantily supplied and some of them empty. The wholesale dealers have not advanced prices, however. Jeweler. Bangles and badges made to order. We beat the world on fine engraving. , Don't forget The Soap Store, " No. 6 Circle. DIED.
