NEW YORK STORE. (ESTABLISHED 1853 J •- HOLIDAY GOODS! STORE WILL BE OPEN SATURDAY EVENING, MONDAY, TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY EVENINGS. PETTIS. BASSETT i CO. A REDUCTION OF FEES. A Verdant Legislator's Virtuons Intentions Concerning County Officers’ Salaries. It is said that a bill will be introduced at the forthcoming session of the Legislature by anew member of good intentions providing for a reduction of fees and salaries in some of the county and State offices, but is altogether likely that it will meet the fate of all such previous measures. It is reported that the bill contemplates a material reduction of the fees of county sheriffs, and some new provisions for regulating the manner in which the affairs of county treasurers shall be conducted. The office of Reporter of the Supreme Court will probably be trimmed of much of its “phat.” The income of tne Reporter, since the work of the Supreme Court commission begun, lias been, it is estimated, from $12,000 to $15,000 a year, and there is a popular feeling in favor of reducing the revenue of the office to within a reasonable remuneration for the services required. The price of the reports is $3.50 per copy, and there is a howling demand from the lawyers for a reduction. It is said that one of the petitions for reducing the price, circulated two years asm, was signed by Mr. Kern, the newly elected Reporter, and it is stated that Reporter Martin, the predecessor of Mr. Dice, prior to his becoming a candidate for the office, was also a petitioner for cheaper reports. _ A Sermon for Commercial Travelers, Some months ago the Rev. R. V. Hunter, of the Seventh Presbyterian Church, of this city, preached a sermon to tho “traveling salesmen.” Quite a number of the traveling men have united in signing a paper requesting Mr. Hunter to repeat this sermon. He has consented to do go, Sabbath evening, Dec. 21. Ail traveling ajen are cordiaily invited. Office Furniture at King & Elder’s.

A DISASTROUS FIRE. The Hardware Store of Yajen .t New Damaged to the Extent of $S,l)yO. Tile hardware store of Vajen & New was badly damaged by fire early yesterday morning. The manner in which the fire originated is unknown, but it began in the basement of the building and was discovered in the rear shortly before 4 o'clock. The fire departm responded promptly to the alarm, but owing to the donse smoke which pervaded the entire building, there was a delay of nearly twenty minutes before any effective work could be done. The smoke was suffocating and extinguished the light of the torches carried by the firemen. The flames, however, wore confined to the rubbish and the boxes stored away in the basement, and they were soon extinguished, with the use of little water, the chemical eugine aloue furnishing a sufficient stream. The floor of the store-room was burned in a few places and was more or less damaged, but the loss on the building will not exceed SI,OOO. However, the stock, which is valued at $50,000, was badly damaged by the dense smoke, which marred the appearance of all the polished goods ami will, in consequence, prevent their sale at the usual prices, although the quality of the material remains perfectly good. There is an insurance of $15,000 on the building, placed in the Sun, National and North British companies. On the stock of the firm tliore is an insurance of $20,000, divided among the companies named as follows: North British and Mercantile, $1,500; London, Liverpool & Globe, $4,500; Royal, $3,000; .Etna, $3,000; Westchester, $3,000; Commercial Union, $2,000; Hartford, of Connecticut, $3,600; Home, of New York. $0,500; American, of New York, $2,500, Scottish Union, $2,500: Guardian, $2,500. Messrs. Ya.ien & New will not know the ex lent of the damage to their stock until after a thorough examination and invoice can be made, but it is estimated at about SB,OOO. Although occurring at a particularly unfortunate season, the damage of the fire will not prevent the firm from continuing business. The careful work of the firemen in the use of water will save what might have caused a great loss. Several members of the department suffered from the smoke, one, Joe Gasper, becoming ill from the effects of if. The roof of H. P. Wetsell's stable, No. 739 Delaware street, was burned yesterday morning. The loss is about $l5O, covered by insurance. The department was again called out about 7 o’clock last night, but had a useless run. A Coming Event. S. L. Clemens (Mark Twain) and George W. Cable are to appear together at Plymouth Church, on Wednesday evening, Jan. 7. What the entertainment will be no one yet knows. Whether Mark Twain will give an account of his experiences in the West, “Roughing It,” or as an “Innocent Abroad,” or as a “Tramp Abroad” endeavoring to learn the German lan-. guage, is as yet unannounced. That it will be a unique entertainment goes without question. Mr. Cable is now the ftdus Achates, which is, being interpreted, soul-brother of Mark Twain. Casts of the faces of the two are on exhibition in the windows of the book stores.
