THE DAY’S RAILWAY NEWS. Personal Matters—The 1., B. & \V. People Paying as They Go. Colonel ITervey’s Enterprise Progressing— The C., H. & I. Fight Likely to Lead to Extended Litigation. Personal Notice. Ballway superintendents uud other officials are requested to honor uo requests for passes, or other favors, save those directly from John C. Jfew Sc Son, from either the busiuess or editorial Gepat tments of the Journal. Personal Points. W. J. Williard bus bedu appointed general height agent of the Passumpsie road. Win. H. Catt, paymaster on the Columbus, Hocking Valley Sc Toledo road, is in tho city, visiting friends. Mr. Georeo M. Rogue has formally announced his intention of accepting the position of arbitrator offered biiu last week by tbo Western roads. E. B. Wingate, chief engineer of the Union Railway Company and Belt Road, has taken office room in the Union Block on West Maryland street. George A. Morton has been appointed general baggage master of the Boston Sc Albany, aud C. C. B. Swift to tho same position on ibe Vermont Central. Superintendent Ewan, of the Bee Line, will, Monday next, move into his now quarters on Alabama stnet, wblcb will be the pleasantest offices in the city. Edgar Hill, of Cleveland, assistant general freight agent ot the Bee Line system, who has been in the city for a day or two, left for LouisYllie last evening. Chief Ergineer Loren*, of the Philadelphia A Heading railroad, will retire from that position soon, on account of ill health, nud will be succeeded by il. K. Nichols, of Potraville. who has been engineer in charge ot lateral roads for several years. Will Rech, who for several years was telegraph operator at this point for the Vandalls, is mw chief traiu dispatcher on the Kansas City, Bt. Jo. Sc Council Bluff road, at a salary of sl2.> per mouth. Eighteen mouths ago he left a SOO position on the Vaudalia, John Miller, the engineer killed In the collision O’' the CiNtnnaatl, Hamilton Sc Dayton, near Sidney, had run on the road twenty-throe years, and this was his third accident. In the second accident he was so severely injured that for years he needed a cane to get about. Local Notes. Officials of the Pittsburg, Cincinnati Sc 6t. Louis road report trains moving with their usual promptness, and the oompauy Is taking all classes of freight offered. The cyclone express trains over the Vandalia came through yesterday promptly on time, -which is evidence that the road is cleared of wrecks and the high waters giving them no trouble. The Jeffersonville, Madison Sc IndiaDapolis read increased its gross enmincs in 1882 over those of 1881 nearly $150,000, notwithstanding the light traffic southward the Last three months of 1882. The Cincinnati, Hamilton Sc Dayton is receiving the new Consol engines for the Indianapolis division, bur, cannot run them over the road with safety until anew trestle 225 feet long is put in at Hurricane valley. Agents of the fast-freight lines at this point which send their cars East via Detroit report that their business is being seriously delayed at Detroit. So troublesome is the ice that the transfer boats can hardly be movod. Light earnings on all railways of thlsoountry tnay be expected for February, as there seems to be no section where snow, ice or high waters is not interfering with the movement of all classes of bur-dues*, while operating expenses arc heavy. The Union Railway Company hue Just expended some $9,000 in putting in a first-class flrty-flve-hors- power engine at the Belt road shops and building a largo water tank at Pleasant run and the putting in of anew stationary engine to work the pump. During the recent trouble from high‘waters, Superintendent Miller, of the P., C. Sc St. L„ gave orders that before a passenger train was hauled over any bridge or trestle the engine should first be detached from the train aud run over the structure to ste that It was safe. Paymaster Alien, of the Indiann, Bloomington & Western system, will nay the employes to-day at ibis point for January services, on the Peoria division Friday, fct. Louts division Saturday, middle division Monday next, Ohio division Tuesday, and the Ohio Southern Wednesday. The citizens of Liberty, Ind., are urging Vicepresident Waite, of the C., H. and 1., to build them anw depo; They offer to buy the ground needed and pay SI,OOO toward the depot, which, it Is estimated, will cost $3,000. Root Bros., manufacturers lu that city, offer to give SSOO toward the Improvement. The Indianapolis Sc Vincennes is running trams only between Spencer and Viucennes; yesterday afternoon the Stockyard traiu was abandoned. Ho much did running it over the J., M. Sc I. and Belt road interfere with moving trains on the latter that it was thought advisable to cease running it until the bridge over White river is in a condition to run over It safely. General News. The New York Central liudsou railroad last year transported 207,496 'through passengers, and 10,101,483 way passengers, an increase over 1881 of nearly 50,000 through aud 1,250, 000 way passengers. General Porter, president of the Buffalo & West Shore road, says the Albany division will be opened by the Ist of May. The distance is 138 miles. The Syracuse division is expected to be opened by May 15. Governor Evans, of the Denver & New Orleans road, who was reported in New York on a mission looking to peace with the Denver A Grande, Is now said to be organizing a syndicate of New York capitalists to build a road from Wichita Falls to Pueblo, to fill up the gap between the Fort Worth & Denver City and the Denver A New Orleans roads, giving a through Hue from Fort Worth to Denver. It Is said that Vanderbilt has no idea of attempting to control the Buffalo A West Shore road, and it might trouble him at best to raise tbo $30,000,000 needed to secure control of the property, hot he now- proposes to clip the wiugs of the West Shore by building an additional liuo from Byraeuse to Buffalo and Buapeusin Bridge, aud the work may be entered upon at an early date. The effect of this would be to out out the West Shore aud give the older road a valuable auxiliary. TIIE NEW FRISCO LINE. The Illinois Central people uow announce by pos* 4 *- that arrangements have been made to *an on© Line of sleeping coaches from Chicago to New Orleans, and another line from New Orleans to Sau Francisco, thus requiring but one change of cars between Chicago aud Han Francisco. Far' *ne same as by other routes. The ruiiuiiig ' .iie will besix (lays eighteen hours and ten minutes. A through freight traffic agreement is to be entered iuto as well. BOTH SPUNKY. As the Union Railway Company seem determined to press the question at issue between them and the Cincinnati, Hamilton A Dayton Railroad Company, the latter has asked a postponement of the hearing before the Superior Court, set for Monday next, until next mouth, which request has been granted. This indicates lengthy litigation, and quite effectually blights the prospects for anew Union Depot this year, ts the Union railway will not act iu the matter until this question is settled. THE PROGRAMME CARRIED OTTT. The reorganization of the Marrletta A Clnjin%ati Railroad Company, under the name of the Cincinnati, Washington A Baltimore, was effected yesterday at Ohllloothe, 0., and the following board of directors elected: Robert Garrett, T. Edward Hamilton, Samuel Spencer and J. Carroll Walsh, Bultiiuore; W. T. MrClintoek, Chlllcotlie, O.; Orlaud Smith, Columbus; George Headley, James I). Lelnner and J. L. Keck, Cincinnati, The board will meet in Oiueluuati lor organization to-day. A USELESS WASTE OF TIME. Another effort was made, Tuesday, to establish the eastdjonad pool at Peoria, and through it to brace up rates, but it proved abortive, some of the roads not being represented. The fact is that H. C. Diehl, general freight agent of the 1.. 25. A \\\, has become disoouraged in the attempt
to tone up and maintain rates at that, point, as the general managers and freight agents of some lines think it a sharp trick to sign an agreement, and theu break it within twenty-four hours. Within the lust four years the jjpol has been re-established four times, and an agreement to maintain rates has been signed by all parteis six times withiu the above mentioned period. STILL ENTHUSIASTIC. Colonel R. G. Ilervey, president, etc., of the Indianapolis Sc Evansville Straight Line, was in the city, yesterday, and has lost none of his enthusiasm about the enterprise. Monday next regular trains are to he put on between Washington, on the Ohio A Mississippi road, and Petersburg, and February 15 the United States mall and express go on. Regarding the road between Washington and Indianapolis, he states that Monday last the survey of the line, via Bloomington to Indianapolis, was sent on to the parties in the Hast who are ha king him for theirexainination. and also statements as to the country through which the road will pass, the character of its coal mines and Its stone quarries, and he expects before the close of this month a decision will bo reached whether It is advisable to push the road on to Indiananolis this season. Colonel Herve.v is rapidly liquidating all indebtedness incurred while the enterprise was under a financial cloud, aud will soon be able to present a clean record, which, when shown, will be highly complimentary to him, so great are tho obstacles which he overcome. GETTING INTO WORKING ORDER. After several years dilly dallying the railroad commission of New York has been constituted and will soon be in working order. Tho three members have been duly continued and have entered upon tho duties of their office. They have been chosen by the terms of the law, ono each respectively from the Democratic and the Republican party, and one has been named by two organizations {in which Mr. F. B. Thurber is the ruling spirit) known as the National Board of Trade and Transportation and the National Anti-monopoly League of New York. The New York Chamber of Commerce, which also cast a vote in the tripartite council, favored the Hon. A. B. Hepburn, who was the original mover in the matter of railway investigations several years since. The term of office is five years. A clerk and a marshal are allowed to the commission, to whom the duties ordinarily performed by such officers are assigned. These two subordinates shall hold no official relation* with auy railroad, shall own no railroad stork, and shall have no pecuniary interest in auy firm having business relations with railroads. The meetings of tue commission shall take place at leust ottoe a month. The salary of the commissioners is SB,OOO, of the chief clerk $3,000, and of the marshal $1,500, and the coinmission has the right to hire additional assistance, but the total expenses of the commission must not exceed $50,000 a year. There are many and various duties and powers delegated to tbe board. They are given ‘‘general supervision of all railroads ami rail ways, so far as is necessary to enable them to perforin the duties and exercise the powers imposed and conferred by law.” They must examine the roads and keep informed as to their condition, the way they treat the public, and how well they keep within the law. It is made their duty to investigate all Accidents on the roads resulting in less of life or damage to persons and property which they think it worth while to examine. The commission has the power to examine at all times tho books aud affairs of the roads, can compel the production or books and papers (copies). 6iibJXBii* witnesses, administer oaths, compel attendance, etc. A CLEAN RECORD. As the Indiana, Bloomingtou A Western is the only company which has its general offices at Indiauapolis, naturally Indianapolitans are muck interested in Its prosperity. From an official of the road it is learned that not a dollar of lndebtednes, unless it be some disputed claim, can be brought against the company dating back of Jan. 1, 1883. The earnings of the road, besides paying operating expenses in 1882, paid the interest on the bon*!* of the Peoria division—which was $50,000 in excess of that of any former year since the company was reorganized, the per ceut. of interest increasing year by year until 7 per oeut. is reaobed—paid $200,000 rental for the Indianapolis, Decatur A Springfield, also equipment bonds or the 1., D, AS., which the 1.. B. A W. assumed when leasing the lino; paid 33*3 percent., of gross earnings, as rental, ror the Cleveland, SamLisky A Columbus road—some $360,000; expended $150,000 in Improvement* at Sandusky aud on this division. as well paid iuterest on the bonds of the middle division after May 1, 1882. and paid out seine $30,000 in building stations anil other improvements to this division since the roudwaa received from the contractors—und still there iB a surplus in the treasury to pay interest on ail the bonded indebtedness and the rentul of leased lines for two months to come; ho that, financially speaking, but few roads m the country have a cleaner record. Regarding the rumor that the company were anxious to unload, Austin Corbin, president, says he will not sell his stock, nor will the capitalists interested with him, neither the securities they hold, at n resent prices or at a sharp advance on present* prices, and until they sell their holaiug is so large that no other party oau secure control of the property, which he looks upon as haviug a very promising future, and he predicts that, with average crops'Una year and the maintenance or rates, the earnings for the year 1883 will exceed an average of $300,000 per month. Since the present management took holdtbelst of last mouth an amount of money has been taken and forwarded to New York sufficient to pay iuterest and rentals, although due ouly every six months. Then auy surplus money has been expended in Improvements. Superior Court. Room No I—Hoo. Napoleon B. Taylor, Judge. John J. Murtin et ai. vs. E iza Blake et al ; foreclosure of tax lien.
