The statement in the Morning Journal that Mr. W. H. Enelish wae appointed on the Committee on Resolution, at the meeting of bu- iness men, last night, to consider matters touching the monetary crisis, is an error. M r. E. desires us to say that he is not on that Committee. The nineteenth aoniversay of the Y. M. C. A , at Meridian 8treet church last evening, was well attended. Preident Sedgwick's address was quite lesgthy, going over the whole ground. The Association is now reported out of debt, with a small balance in the treasury. Dr. Naylor, Dr. Withrow and C. P. Jacobs addressed the meeting, while the choir furnished excellent music. The exercises were interesting throughout, and long to be remembered. The year opens with bright prospects for doing good.

As an evidence of the benefits of life insurance, we may state that Mr. Means had $18,000 on his life, $3,000 of whica was in the Masonic Mutual. ABOUT THE COURTS. The trial of Lorenzo Kemp, as accessory after the fact to the murder of Captain Jacks, is still on trial in the Criminal Cpurt. This morning, C. E. Pettitt, formerly boss trickmason on the government building, was called by the State and questioned concerning the relative ages of Cope and Wilson, the murderers, and the defendant, Kemp. He stated that he did not think there were five years' difference in their ages. He was then asked whether any of the parties named bore toward each other the relations of grandfather and grandson, orof father and son, tie object being, on the part of the State, to preclude the defense of consanguinity. The admission of the evider.ee was strongly contested by the defense, the witness not being aware, of his own knowledge, that any such relationship existed, aid otjictiocs being urged to questions upon presumption of fact. The matter wes argued until the noon recess, when the Court took the matter under advisement, promising a decision upon the re-assembling of Court at 2 p. m. Judge Perkins in Room No. 1, of the Superior Court, rendered the followiag judgments: Woollen & Ruddell vs. John Belo-, et a'. tttO 62. Adam Hereth, et al. vs. Win. M. Jones, $317 83. David A. Ireland, et ai. vs. James McClellan, $S2 55. Elizabeth Denny vs. Julia A. McUrday, et al., $443 20. And the following cases were dismissad: Robert Johnson vs. J. M. fc I. R. Co., et aL Indianapolis Sentinel Company vs. Louis Lang. In Judge Newcomb's Room, No. 2, the case of James H. Tomlinson, et al. vs. The Indianapolis, Bloomington and Western Kailway, for damages sustained upon said read, is on trial before a jury. This case was decided some time 6lnce, with a verdict for plaintiffs, but a new trial was granted by Judge Newcomb, in consideration of the heavy damages assessed. In Judge Blair's Room, No. 3, the case of R. J. Bright vs. the Indianapolis Sentinel Company is still on trial. Ia the Civil Circuit Cour the case of Ell W. Farmer vs. the city of Indianapolis, for damages sustained by failing istothe Illinois street tunnel several months ego, is on trial before a jury. n THE MEETING LAST NIGHT. The second adjourned meeting of business men last night, at the Criminal Court room, was numerously attended, and all seemed to have a realising sense of the importance of doing something to relieve, if possible, the present monetary troubles. There were about as many different opinions in regard to the best plan for doing so as there were persons present. James Buchanan, Erq , and Mr. David Gibson each presented a series of resolutions, wklch were discussed at length by a number of persons. A committee on res olutions was finally appointed, and the meeting adjourned to meet again this evening, at the same place, at 7 o'clock. THE VIRTUES OF OIL OP VITRIOL. Some learned pundit recommended Will Mason, of the Po6t-office, whose favorite dog was afflicted with some kind of disease of the cuticle, to try the effects of an external appli cation of oil of vitriol and lard mixed. Will tried it; but either the substances were not al lowed to become thoroughly mixed, or the oil of vitriol was "powerful strong," for in an in. credibly short time, the poor animal was baked to a consistency that would baye made a halfstarved Greenlander's mouth water. In a word, the unfortunate dog was burnt to a crisp, and poor Will is grieving for his untimely death, and regretting the expenditure of stamps for fiery liquid. SEEING THE ELEPHANT. A young man from Eel River Township, Hendricks County, drove into the city yester day afternoon with a load of apples. After selling out to good advantage, he concluded he would remain in the city all night and see what was to be seen. He did so, and the result was plainly visible upon his face this morning. From appearances he ha seen a great deal more than he at first anticipated. Besides be ing fearfully bruised and battered, his clothing soiled and torn, his eyes bloodshot, and his nose flattened out like a flapjack, he was minus just eleven dollars and fifty cents which had been stolen over and above the total expenses of his spree. WORK OF THB " FIRK BUGS " The stables of Mr. Schutzen and Dr. B. Wood were set on fire last night, but, luckily, the damage was slight in both cases, the Fire Depsrtment soon extinguishing the flames. The first named was on East, just south of South street; the other, on the allev north of Washington, between East and Libeity streets. It is a pity these incendiary villians cannot get the fullest measure of 'condign,' aa old Recorder Ricker used to say. DOGORAMA. Considerable excitement prevailed in the neighborhood of Ohio and Missouri streets, yesterday afternooa. Nine dogs, belonging to one house, which have heretofore lived in a peaceable, quiet way, disagreed, among themselves, and there is n telling what the result would have been had not the landlady come to the rescue. The way she slashed dogs about was astonishing. "Tail holts" were as good aa any, and for about five minutes the air wai black with d?gs.
TOE TRICKS OF TOE INTELLIGENT COM POSITOR,
This illustrious individual Is responsible for a good deal of superlative deviltry, but if he has the proper degree of ambition, and is more over indoctrinated with a leaning toward woman's rights, he can raise a muss in the reportorial camp by leaving "out" anything that gives prominence to his own sex. Yesterday, for example, in a notice of a proposed enter tainment for the benefit of the poor, we wrote "appeals to the heart of every good man and woman in the community;" but the compositor wasn't to be fooled Into recognizing the existence of such an institution as a heart in any other than the softer sex, so he let the women carry off all the glory. Fully sympathizing with his admiration for the feminine portion of cre ation, we must say that he gives evidence of being cruelly prejudiced against his own sex. MAYOR'S COURT. Charles A. Colley was adjudged a vagrant, and recognized to the Criminal Court Andrew J. Sloan was dismissed from a charge of provoke. Wm. C. Dailey and Joseph Hughes were assessed for drunkenness, and William Morrison and Jehn Murphy dismissed. The tnal of Bud Stewart, the drunken rowdy, who assisted in battering and bloodying Robert Andrews so badly, yesterday, and that of Robert himself, on charges of assault and battery and drunkenness, were deferred until tomorrow.
