McKernan, of this c ity, has recelv ed intelligence from Memphis of the death of one of hU sisters, by the dread yellow Bcourge that is carrying sadness and mourning into so many Southern homes. The letter bears date of the Sth inst,, and says 81ster Mary Josephine, an inmate of the con--vent of St. Agnes, where Slater Mary Joseph -McKernan was engaged in pious minlstrattons to the sick she having gone over Iro m Nashville to Mumphls, in company with ano ther 6ister, to nurse the sick and attend te the dying. The other sister had been tricen by the disease, and may be now ' either dead or in a dying conditt on. The first Intelligence Mr. McKernan received of any trouble, was the annoucement of .his sister's death. She was fifty-two years of ae, and her sister fifty. PERSONAL. Octo ber 8:h, from Galveston for New York, reports that during a severe huiricane on the CA.'Captain Cole, the second ottcer, the chief engineer, and one seaman were washed overboard and drowned. Buddington lasted five hours, and related particularly to his relations with Capt. Hall, he declaring there was not the slightest foundation for any report of difterence between him and Hall. Petroit, MiC3., October 11. A fire com menced this evening, at 5:10. In the sasb. door and blind factory of J. F. Weber As Co., on Sherman street, which rapidly spread, and in a tew minutes several buildings were In Dimes, a strong northwest wind was blowing at the tine, and a great conflagration was imminent. Through great exertion ths fire was stayed, at tit twelve buildings were de stroyed, wnlch were moety frame dwellings. Among the buudlngs destroyad was J. W. Weber Sc Co's sash, door and blind factory, and Jacob Mann's brewery. Total loss, f5O,U0O; insurance trifling - BETRAYED BY HIS DOG. At DsrJinjfJon on Saturday, September 18, Charles Dawgon, an Iron worker, who bad left his wife and live with a young woman named Margaret Addison, attacked the latter in the house with a coal rake, beating her on tbe head and body. The ruffian then, as his victim screamed, pre ssed her neck down on the floor with one of his heavy boots, while with the other he kicked hr. He jumped on her abdomen, and finally seized a large earthen pan and dashed It upon her head, killing her on the spot. The whole el . the affair was witnessed by a man who was dstarred from Interfering by a loaded revolver, which Dawson held. Dawson decamped. Stroar bodies of police guarded the different roads from the town, and searched several of his haunts. At three o'clock on Sunday morning a dog, recognized to be Dawson's, was -fallowed, and Sergeant Cuthbert broke open a door at which the anl-f mal waa scratching tqebtaln admission, and captured Dawson, who was sitting on a chair. The murderer, although armed with a loaded revolver, offered bo resistance.

About midnight last nleht, at a boarding house at 81 Butterfled street, in the extreme southern part of the city, Patrick Lawless was stabbed so that ha died In an hour afterwards by James Walsh. who, with two companions had forced an en trance into the house, with the design of at tacking the keeper of the house, who had expelled him for non-payment of board. The Intransigents fleet has been defeated by the national squadron. The fight took plaee Saturday, near Cartagena, and lasted two hours. Tbe insurgent vessels were considerably injured and were compelled to return to the Cartagena harbor. The Government squadron consisted of the Alamansa, Victoria, Carmen, and two smaller vessels. There Is a rumor that the Titnon has been captured, but the Government has received no such intelligence. There is great rejoicing over the victory. CINCINNATI. AID FOR MEMPHIS. CINCINNATI. O.. A DISCOVERT. A rather astonishing bit of chemical news ap pears In a Paris letter to the Turf, Field and Farm. It describes a dln-overv related at a secret session of tbe Paris Academy of Science. June 13. This discovery is tbat hydrogen, hith erto considered an element, is in reality a combU nation of two elements, one of which Is nine times as light as hydrogen, and twenty-five times as light as ordinary illuminating gas. Tbe new element is called abaron, meaning weightless. It will not burn, extinguishes flame, is rithout odor, taste or color. Tbe discoverer Is M. Leharre, a well-known French chemist, and nis discovery waa not an accident, but tbe re sult of a series of successful experiments. The Influence of the discovery, should it be substan tiated, upon ballooning, will be manifest?? The tremendous lifting power of abanon will render capable of resisting all strains and shocks, and aiso or preventing tne escape oi tne gas by exoeaaesia. A FEMALE MILL A Birmingham. England, paper describes a scandalous pugilistic encounter which took place between two women in Glover street, Birmingham. Kate Dowell and Ann Maria Morgan were the combatants (says the paper ia uestlon.) There were twenty or thirty rouuds lasting as many minutes which shows that both sides "went in for business" and that the women an seconds, who "kneed" them, as in a regular prize fight, between the rounds. Mrs. Morgan's second was her husband, who exhorted her to 'go for her antagonist in these words: "If yer don't light. I'll five ver what for. Pull yer Jacket off, aud fight like a man." And In tbe course of the tight he "went to the tap and got some water to rub her face with." These facts were stated at tbe police court. where Dowell was charged by Morgan with an assault. The conclusion of the case is almost incredible "The evidence showing that there were faults on both sides, prisoner was discharged." ' in -Dr. James Jones, one of tho original nrn feasors of th Uciversily of Louisiana, died to-day, aged 66. The National Bank Examiner reports th loss to tbe Merchants' National Bank of Lowell, by the defalcation of the cashier, at 103,701, with a possible liability of f 31,000 more. There were three death from yellow fever' at Montgomery, Ala., within the past twentyfour hours, Tbe deaths to-day and Friday are the only cases, and are attributed to cold weather. Tnree fatal cases of yellow fever were reSorted yesterday, in Argenta, opposite Little ock, being men employed on the Memphis and Little Hock Railroad, who contracted the disease in Memphis.
