Special meeting of
next Monday afternoon. The -first sale of lots in Indianapolis took place fifty-two years ago yesterfay. After to-morrow the Judges of the Supreme Court win take a week's vacation. Mrs. Ellen 8. Tupper has recently purchased the National Bee Journal, published in this city. Tha weather is as delightful as a May morn, and suspicions of the spproach of Indian, summer are afloat. Some thievinj; Bcoundrel took $100 from the pocket of Elder P. M. Blankenship, of Martinsville, as he was boarding the Vincennes train last night. The, Dean Brothers' machine works gives employment to thirty -one men. Neither wages
nor time have been cut down in this shop. The proprietors say that they have enough -work already in the shop to keep them going all winter. The tree on which the man Conner hung himself some days since, was yesterday made a further instrument of mischief. It was cut down and thrown on the Peru tracks, and came near demolishing an incoming freight train. 8ome ot the branches struck a watchman, knock'ng him down, and bruising him considerably. A railway engineer has been visiting our city, whose funeral sermon was preached many years ago. It was preached under the Impression that the engineer had been killed in a collision on the old Madison Road; and when the mistake vas ascertained, the house of mourn, ing became the house of feasting. That engineer's name is Jim Campbell. Sam. Perkins and Tom. Barber were thrown over tbe dashboard of a buggy in which they
were riding on West street, last evening, and badly bruised. The accident occurred from an insane attempt on the part of the horse to leap a chasm made by the sinking of the earthwhere gas mains had been recently put down. The horse ran a couple of rquares, demolished the buL'sy and stopped. Mr. A. O. Pope, accompanied by his wife and a Miss Trimble, were riding in a buggy down Delaware street, last evening.and getting into the throng of vehicles, struck a coal cart, upsetting axd demolishing the vehicle. The inmates were thrown cut, and Mrs. Pope received, as she stated, some injuries of an internal nature. Dr. Harvey, near whose residence the accident occurred, attended to the lady's injuries. The promised attraction at tho Fair and Exposition for yesterday was the free-for-all trot for a purse of $350-f 200 to Hn horse; $100 to second, and 50 to third. The crowd was simply immense pot less than 25.C00 persons witnessed the sport, and they were not only packed in tbe amphitheatre and along the quarter stretch, but every available tree, fence, the patent hay presses and gates, were loaded wtVa them, and they were 6trong round the entire length of the track , to say nothing ot the many hundreds that occupied vehicles alon g tbe pike on the outside of the grounds. A close race was anticipated by many between two of the contestants Red Cloud and Kate Bennet as tho latter has trotted fast for a five year old, and it was mysteriously hinted that she was capable of eclipsing aiy time she has ever publicly displayed? but the result of yesterday's race dis appointed her friends, and strengthened the toni'ideece of the many admirers of te gallant little bay gelding. WHAT MR. GEORGE WILKES HAS DONE. ISpirit of the Times. As an amusing exhibition of the puerility cf these Braces and Busby and their auxiliary B's, we will state what their accusations were. They charged us, first, with having once' made war upon General McClellan becauso he would not give us a beef contract, or some other favor; and, next, with having vilified General Grant, because he would not confer upon us the Mexican mission. They then denounced us as having defamed that exemplary wife and mother. Queen Victoria, because she would not receive us at Court; and at this opportunity accused us of having been the referee, within her Majesty's dominions, of "a brutal Diize fight."
These people are unfortunate in every thing. They do not lie with any ingenuity; and they are too lazy and too incompetent to make np a plausible or decent case. Tbe connI try knows that it was the fnrce of our articles which removed General McCleUan from the
command of the Army of the Potomac; and that not all the inspiration of revenge could affix a stain upon our motives. The country knows, also, that we personally efiected a reconciliation between Gen. Grant and Gen. Butler; but it does not know, though we may as well now tell it for the first time, that Gen. Butler, after this reconciliation, telegraphed to us from Washington to know if we would like to have the missien to Brazil, and subsequently asked if it would be agreeable to us to fill vacancy which would be created for ns in the Navy Agency bv the removal of Moses H. Grinnell both which suggestions we declined. As to her much respected Majesty Victoria the First, we had the honor of being presented to her, at the June levee ot 1800 by the then American Minister, Geo. M. Dallas. The record of that presentation will be found in the London Tune of that period, which is
