JTLY 19. 1873 CITY BREVITIES. Regular meeting of Council to-niErht. Counterfeit twenties, of United States currency, are said to be in circulation. Deputy Clerk Smock proposes to start for Sr. Louis and Kansas City to-nigUt. A trial of the machinery of the Indianola elevator was to have been made to-day. I: has been fully determined to locate the Northwestern Chrisiian University at Irving, ton. A picnic, in honor of Frail Dotcon's reeert marrkfre, was participated in by his German fellow citizens at Crown Hill yesterday. Extensive chemical and pharmaceutic works are soon to be established in this city, by Dr. John F. Johnson and Colonel Ira Lilly. It is thought that the amphithertre in which Eirnum's great show will exhibit, will accommodate seventeen thousand 6ight-seers with seats. An attempt of the prisoners to escape from the big room of the Station House, Saturday night, was frustrated by the watchfulness tf Jailor Taffe. A sixteen-year-old son of J. Brooks, No. 20 West McCarty street, fell from a tree a distance of near thirty feet, yesterday afternoon, breaking his leg and suflVirin-j a concussion that rendered him insensible for some time. Drs. Fox andMcL-tin placed him in as comfortable a position as pos.iHe. SHAKP PRACTICE. A young nan, named John Martin, and a companion procured a horse and buggy from a West Washington street stable yesterday aftercoon, for the purpose of driving out to the piecic at Crown Hill grove. As they wire goiag along West street, near where the new school house is buildirg, the horse shied suddenly, partially overturniag the buggy and throwing the inmates out. The ani mal then ran to the Cottontown bridge when he was caught by a posse cf young men. Martin being considerably injured about the head, by the fall, his companion did not like to leave him to go af cer the hor3e, and serrt a boy to teM the captors to hitch the animal. The boy came back and st ited that the horse catchers had get in the buggy and driven off, seyiDg that they wanted to take a ride, and guessed they'd go oat to the picnic. As soon as Martin recovered from the t fleets cf the jar, he and his companion started afterthe purloiners, bvet at kst accounts they had not been successful. REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS. AT THE SEA SIDE. WOMAN'S r.EAUTT IX TUB BtTH SUKF AND SENTIMENT FKENCH ASH AMERICAN SWIMMERS COCKTSHIP A I.t MODE. To the Editor of the Daily Graphic Long Branch, July 14 If anything or anybody could digrify the forlorn spectacle of shivering humanity issuing from an ocean bath then the lamented Hulpine has done it in on? of those dainty bits of verse which have floated in and out of nearly every newspaper in the country, ms poetic soul tcus idealizes some sea-side belle: Her cheek hath caught a ruddier stain, And her tnull feet, in sand that sitk, Are marblt -white, wi'h many a v in Down to the slim nd rails of pink. The wave- that have shrined her radiant form Must be humanized by the eaintly touch. And will spare for her sake in the next great strm Some proud ship from their clutch. If Private Miss, instead of twanging the 'yre in praise o? his sea-side belle, had been writing of her with the journalistic quill, ho would have dropped sentimtnt and told us. probably, thut she wore a huge straw hat, tied down over her ears, and went into the water very warm an'' ui comfortable, and came out very white tnd diippy. WOMAN'S DRESS.
THE AMERICAN TENDENCY TO OVER DRESS THE ENOLIEU SIMPLICITY OP DRESS. Golden Age.l Our women do spend a gnat deal too much on dre-s and Other fanciful gewgaws.which tbe French know so well how to tempt a toiletteloving woman. Ia the first place, everything' seems so cheap to a shopper, for the enormous duties imposed by our customs raiRe the prices of laces, silks, cashmeres, and other expensive articles of dress to an almost unapproachable price for any but the wives of millionaires; and when the wile of a man not overburdened with this world's goodi finds that she can secure a lace shawl, ora cashmere or a velvet or silk dress for what seems to her about half its value, she would not. bfi a daughter of Eve If she did tot find it difficult to resist the temptation, and she often spends more than she ought to do in this way merely because it is such a bargain. But even this first yielding to over-indulgence in extravagant dressing in a snort time cures ltselL American ladies have good taste and a keen sense of the fitness of tbinus above all they hate'vulgarlty; and when they find, as they soon do. that it is ''not the thiog" to dress much at water placss or in the street, they quickly discard their extravagant finery and purchase more simple and inexpeneive arets lor ineir outfits. Tne English ladies of rank rather pride themselves on the simplicity, not to say tastelesness, of their wardrobes at the watering plac i, and they turn the cold shoulder with a "Brit 1th gorgon ftare" thrown in, to their American cons-ins who 11 innt in gorgeous apparel. An American lady, who chacced to trivel for several days with an English gentiem.in and l&dy, had been rather struck by the antiquity f the black silk and the coarseness of the limn collar and cutis worn by her traveling companions, but the con versa! im which naturally sprang up bttween the two parties showed our country woman that the English lady was indeed a lady of culture and gracious manner. She grew great'y interested in her, and on part ing, fortt e first time by an eschar ge of cr.-;s. sqb learned with whom she had been associated. It was Lady Augusts Stanley, the wife of Dtan Stanley, and Quetn Victoria's most irti mate friend. Yet cer traveling dress was fo simple, in fact so almost shabby, that the lady's maid of cur Araericaa tiif jrmant would have hesi at d to wear it. The newspaper correspondents gave ua recently another instance cf thi3 simplicity of toilette, in thtir description of the drets wo:n by the oldest daughter of Queen Victoria and tae future Empress of Gerinnny, on a tour through the Italian lakes. Toe costume oa this occisioa was a plain dress ot raw silK, with parasol and bat to match; anl this qul-t attire is unvariable among the ladies of nigh ratk in Europe when on a journey, or at places of public resort. Ooe except iou .to this lust statement must be made. At t e opira full dress is universal, worn to low-necked toreages for ancient dames ,-f dir, fat" and sixtj ! Englibb, F.ench and Russian wootcnareby no m ans given to economy iu dress, but they reserve their expefsiva array for Sta e occisions.and our American ladic6 are learning rapidly heu to wear thtir jewels and gaily ttiiutnd dresses, and wneu to robe theta-selrt-s simply. Tue European fashionables would be only horrified to see our young American girls dressed in point lace, diamonds and India SDaw.s, which with them no lady but a m-rricd one could wer.r without outraging evrr rule of propriety. Inexpensive and simple styles aloue belcngto oucg girls, and this lesson is a good one for our fond American motners to learn, chice they are apt to overload their youag daughters with fintry. A FORBEARING CLERGYMAN. A clergyman was recently aonjyed ry people talking and giggling. 1U paused, looked at the disturbers, and said: ' I am always efnid to reprove those who misbehave, for this reason: dome years since, as I was ;rachi;iw, a young man who sat before me was coestsn-ly laughing, talking and making uscou'h grim-at-HS. I paused and administered a severe rebuke. After the close of the service a gentleman sai 1 to me: 'Sir, you have made a mistakeTnat young man was an idiot ' Since then I have always been afraid to reprove those who mis'jchsve themselves in chapel lest I should repeat tnat mistake and reprove another idiot." During the rest of the service there was gocd order. THE EXCOMMUNICATION OF VICTOR EMMANUEL.
