WE hava several bargains In Business and Dwel ling pi operty which will repay examination by those wishing to Invest. In suburban property, the best and cheapest In market are the large and beautiful Lots In BR I GrHTW OOD. The numerous Manufactories, Depot, Double Tracks, Dwellings, fcc, that are already contracted for, assure a prosperous future for this suburb, and additions to the substantial mprovements will be made daily. CITY BREVITIES. The School Board will meet to-night. It Is said that the fatal cases of epizootic now amount to ten per day. Two-legged power now transports the mail wagon from the Postoffice to the depot. Mrs. Tyler and Mrs. Anderson are now wanting divorces from their liege lords. We thought the new prosecuting attorney's name was Parker, but a morning paper renders it "Griffin." There will be a meeting on Tuesday night next of the opponents of the coal road, at the Board of Trade rooms. The suit of Francis L. Farmnan against Architect Hod son has been dismissed at the instance of the plaintiS. Real estate agents are anxious that the epizootic should come to an end, as suburban property is selling slowy. The few days of fine weather have given a new impulse to house building, and in all directions new frames are springing up. Judge Howland wi 1 call through the docket of the Civil Circuit Court to-day and to morrow for motions and demurrers. Isaac Lang, coaterfeiter, and Charles Mar tin, mail-robber, have been sentenced by Judge Gresham to five years each in the penitentiary. At the request of eeveral persons we re publish some directions for treating sick horses which appeared in the columns of the Journal a short time since. The first annual ball of the Machinists' and Blacksmiths' Union, Ne. 4, will occur at Ma sonic Hall on the 24th inst. Preparations for a grand time are in progress. Mr. J. Ilodson, architect, mourns the loss of f 10O worth of mathematical and drawing in struments, which some scientific thief stole from his rooms in Martindale's Block. One of the Pan Handle pony engines Jumped the track Just above the Union Depot last night about six o'clock. It remained in that situation the greater part of the night Horatio M. Beach, of the RoCkport (N. Y.) Republic, is in the city picking up items with regard to the business resources and prospects of Indianapolis. Mr. B. is an intelligent gentleman. Maj. English, Superintendent of the Street Railway Stables, runs his horses to the street cars as long as they can eat, on the principle that an animal which is able to eat is able to work. In levying upon the live 6tock of Nicholas Market, yesterday,to pay the costs of his suit.offleer McKlnney found several dead porkers un der his house, which scented the whole neigh borhood. The tribulations of an attache of the Journal, an account of which is published in the morn ing issue, are afflicting to sensitive minds. In such a deplorable fix, it is rather queer that iome benevolent person could not have been found to AauZ him up to his hotel, instead of compelling him to locomote in a sinuous and cork-screw fashion. The first annual ball of the "Employes of the Sewing Machine Cabinet Company" will take place at Mozart Hall on the 10th of De cember The arrangements are in good and tasteful hands, and the affair has fine promise of being a thoroughly successful one. A hasdftome and singularly-original card has been Issued being nothing more nor less than beautiful pieces of maple veneering, which is a unique and happy idea.
A resident in the north part ot the cily his
harnessed up his cow, and is using her us a pro j pellinc: j owe r for hia buggy. A sermon on the subject ! temperance legislation will be delivered Sunday evening bs Rev. Dr. Bayiess, in Roberts Park Church. It is costing the State a considerable little sum of money to put th old r&ttle-trap of a State Hou33 in habitable condition. Hurry up that new building. Mr. John Wallace kindly volunteerd the u?e of three and a half teams and wagons for the purpose of hauling wood for the poor, today, free of charge. The gross earnings of the Indianapolis, Bloomington and Western railway for October were $136,000 against $05,350 in October last year, an increase of f40,C50. Straw is in great demand Just now. The proprietor of the National Hotel this morning paid 17 for an ordinary sized load. It brings from f0 r0 to $3 per load quite readily. A detachment of sixty-four recruits passed through the city last night en route for the frontier via the Vandalia. They are under charge of Captain Sumner and Sergeant Kane. Three drunks, viz.: Frank A. Hartman, James Moore, and Dr. E. Munson, comprised all the business of the Mayor's office to-day. Moore cashed up; the others were committed. Superintendent Mclntire, of the Asylum for Deaf and Dumb, this morning drew a war rant upon the State Treasurer for $4,250, current expenses of that institution for the month of December. Lake county has been heard from. 8he claimed credit for $50,as a mistake in her spring settlement, but upon examination it is found that there was no mietake at all. The fears of the State officers that she had been swallowed up by Lake Michigan, have all vanished. The epizootic doesn't seem to have the ef fect to kill the devil in all the horses. A vicious brute on South New Jersey, this morning, kicked the front part of a buggy to pieces, making the splinters fly like hail. Ills career of mischief was 6oou checked, however not by a Bergh-like precedure, but through the instrumentality of a "black-snake" whip. -Thit eight hundred dollars, alleged to have been taken out of the vest-pocket of Frank Schell, formerly door-keeper of the House of Representatives, at the Mason House, the other night, has not been heard from, and there is strong probability never will be. Mr. Schell takes it very hard, that the thief, after stealing his money, should have made him a prisoner by locking him in his own room! Grocers and Family Supply Dealers sell Dooley's Yeast Powder. It is the best. Take no other. s The first thing you do to-morrow morning", should be to goto the Trade Palace and get the bargains offered in the sale of the Hamilton & Bowker bankrupt stock. The rush will be tremendous, and you must be there early if you want the best choice. THE ABORTION CASE VERDICT OP THE JURY. Major Gordon made a powerful appeal in behalf of John A. Bassett this morning, but it did not prevent the jury, after an hour's deliberation, from bringing in a verdict of $500 fine and one year's imprisonment in the County Jail s HOG THIEVES. A hog thief, the night before last, drove thirty-five fat hogs out of Kingan's yards. Yesterday, the proprietors were quietly engaged in hunting them up, but did not succeed in finding them. To-tlay they are making public inquiries for them. The bold and adroit thief, or thieves, seem to have the gruntcrs effectually secured. THE POLICE BALL. This gathering at Washington Hall, las) night, was a select, extremely orderly and successful one. It was one of the most completely successful affairs of the season. The music wa3 of the best description, and the arrange ments as near perfect as they could be made on an occasion of the kind. The receipts at 12 o'clock were over five hundred dollarslwnlch will prove a considerable lift toward the purchase of books and periodicals for the proposed reading room. BEAUTIFUL SPECIMENS. Mr. William II. Loomls, the original " Bill Loomis," well-known in Indianapolis now living at Fair Flay, Colorado Territory sent Professor Cox a beautifully preserved pair of birds from the Rocky Mountains. They arrived this forenoon. They are birds belonging to the Grouse family, their real name "Ptarmigan." The male is pure white the female mottled, with some white on the wings. They are splen didly pre8erved,'and will he a great addition to the numerous specimens of the gratified recipient. AMUSEMENTS. ACADEMY OF MUSIC. The audience at the Academy last night was one of the largest of the season. The appear ance of Patti was the occasion for a storm of applause as a recognition, which was increased at the conclusion of the vocal pyrotechnics of "Caro nome," from Rlgolctto. In brilliancy of vocalization, tripping up the staccato stairway of the gamut and quivering her musical pin ions at the pinnacle where the perfect voice joins earth to heaven, Patti stands at the head of the concert 6ingers of the age. But when she was recalled and gave "Within a mile of Edinboro Town," with the abandon of an air from Opera Bouffe, instead of the modest exhilaration of a village coquette, she made as great a mistake as would be the substitution of the boisterous step of the can can for the syl van grace fof the Queen of Fairies in a pas trale. In the second part she fairly electrified the audience by the brilliancy of her rendering of "De Bravoure," and in response to the encore.give the "Laughing Song,"and again when forced to appear a third time. This was ex quisite, and she retired with the admiration of all present. Miss Annie Louise Cary increased the admi ration which she excited when here before, by singing in excellent style, and with a voice as clear as the tone of a perfect belL As a response to her recall, she sang Kathleen Movourneen. Everybody was glad to see Sig. Mario and grieved to see that the shadow of his voice was so very dim. Beginning the Romanza from Martha exquisitely, his voice flowed smoothly and sweetly over a few bars until stranded on the sustained upper notes, Mile. Ceano pleas ed the audience greatly, and Mons. Sauret drew a fine and witching bow ; and while neither stand among the great artistes, they added a pleasing variety to the performance. But add it all together, and it falls short of the estimate put on his wares by Mr. Strakosch The prices are greater luau me mem OI we Combination would really justify.
NATIONAL BhE-KErPEIVS ASSOCIATION.' YESTERDAY AFTERNOON'S PROCEEDINGS.
Yesterday afternoon was devcted to the dis cussion of "The best method of increasing stocks," participated in by many of the delegates, including Mrs. Tupper, Mr. Hosmer, and others, and also the next topic, "How to secure the greatest amount of surplus honey." In the evening, a resolution, recommending the various bee journals of the country to the attention of the people, was passed. A long discussion took placa upon tbe profitableness of the Rocky Mountain Bee-plant, and the best plan for propagating it. Also, upon the management of extracted honey, to keep its flavor, and the most feasible plan for calling back departing swarms. The " looking-glass method " seemed to receive the greatest favor among the delegates. "Is honey the secretions of the plants ? " was also discus sed. Some scientists think (he bees make tua honey, while others contend it is matter secreted in the flowers and plants. It was decided at a German convention, that no chemical change took place in the honey, unless the flight of the bees had a chu-niuj effect upon it. THI3 MORNIKO. Resolutions thanking the hotel keepers and railroads, the Judges of the Supreme Court the Press, the President, etc., were unanimously passed. There was an appropriation of $10 to the ianitor; also $50 to D. L. Adair, the re porter. A resolution was also adopted recom mending the formation of auxiliary societies. The unfinished topic Experience in import ing and rearing Italian queen bees was then discussed. A delegate stated that the bee keepers of the United States had been imposed on by one J. H. Chevally, of Switzerland, in advertising queen bees, etc., he having received money and failed to send the queens. A reso lution of censtfre was offered. After a protracted discussion upon the be6t plan for feeding, keeping, and training queenbees, their disposition to quarrel with one another, their age, etc., the reading of letters, etc., and a resolution directing official notice of the objects, etc., of the gathering, and that timely notice of the next meeting be publish ed in all the bee-journals of the counUy, the convention adjourned to convene again in Louisville, Kentucky, at the next regularly appointed meeting of the Association. BURST A FLUE. The Vandalia train due here at 3:45 this morning burst a flue just this Bide of Green castle, by which the train did not arrive until 8:15 being obliged to send back to Terre Haute for another engine. Nobody was hurt. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following officers were elected in Indianapolis Council No. 2, R. and S. M.John Ebcrt, T. I. G. M. Roger Parry, D. G. M. Julius Jones, P. C. V. Heiin Daumont, T. Charles Fisher, R. John Pendergat, C. of the Gds. W. 1L Dla.k, Sentinel. SNEAK TDJEF. After the opera had closed last night, and quiet was supposed to be "reigning in Warsaw," the inmates of the Mason House were startled from their peaceful slumbers by the cry of "Stop thief!" which created as much commotion as though a band of Comanehes were thirsting for Hoosier blood. From the cook to the "boss" of the establishment, all were aroused; and numerous heads were jerked from the doors of rooms, all eagerly searching for the cause of the dire alarm. After the uproar had a little subsided, and people had got their eyes fairly open, the clerk and a couple of guardians of the public weal repaired to room No. 0, occupied by William T. Birdeall, traveling man for the firm of Llndenmeycr fc Bros., New York. It seems from Mr. B.'s explanation, that after he returned from the Pattl-Mario conceit, had read a chapter in the Bible, and retired to reet, he was awakened by the noise of something crawling on the floor, and looking up, he saw the dim outline of a man crawling toward the bed ; and when the ' crawler " found he was watched, he made for the door, and down two flights of stairs into his room, where he was arrested, and gave his name as McLaughlin, from Cincinnati. Luckily, Mr. Birdsall got off without the loss of either money or toggery. The light fingered Cincinnati gentry have not been eminently successful in raids upon our "hasheries" recently. They are almost ture to get gobbled up. An Important Subject to Residents op Indianapolis. The battle of life is frequently a hard fight, but a careful inspection of the ranks of the successful business men will inevitably disclose the fact that the victory remains with those who can contest the struggle the longest. Nothing so effectually lessens a man's ability to attend closely to business as an Impaired digestion. It is said that Napoleon the Great lost the battle of Leipsig, owing to an attack of billiousness, when, his giaat intellect being elouded, he failed to unravel his enemy's plans with his usual penetrating sagacity. What puts the digestion cut of order so quickly as biscuits, bread or pastry which have not risen, or do not assimilate readily with the other food in the stomach? Housekeepers, everywhere, you should make rolls, brea4, biscuits, griddle cakes, pastry, etc., with Dooley's Yeast Powder, which, fourteen year9 experience has proved, is the best, healthiest and cheapest (but not lowest priced) baking powder manufactured. It will Invigorate the brain and strengthen the body, by keeping the digestive organs in a perfectly healthy condition. We do not ask you to take our word for it, but try tho aiticle yourself.
