The squad of burnt-cork bummers which arrived from Louisville yesterday, is reported to have filled the Burt fc Ridgway minstrel troupe to its full capacity. Numerous squads of emigrants, principally Germans, Swedes and Norwegians, are passing through the city daily, westward bound, for the purpose of growing up with the country. A little girl, daughter of Mrs. Watson, who lives near the sewing machine works, was knocked down by a grocery wagon on Massanusetts avenue, about 10 o'clock, the front wheel passing .over her left hand, crushing three fingers. It is not thought amputation win De necessary. The presence of mind and courasre of a man named Herman Werbe saved a young1 son of J. McB. Shepherd from death by drowning in the canal, near the Capital House, yesterday aftermoon. Mark Twain's new book is now being deliv ered to subscribers in this city, and we are in debted to Colonel Sam Vance, the agent, for a copy. "Roughing it" is written in Mark's well-known 6tyle, and is a charming companion for a leisure hour of reading now and then. Many of the scenes and incidents are narrated in a hugely humorous style which, despite the fearful exaggeiation, is captivating. The diet is not solid enough for intellectual nutriment, nor rich enough for intellectual dyspepsia, yet it leaves the reader in a cheerful frame of mind which Is rather sanitary than otherwise. The description of the jackassrabbit and the coyote are worth double the subscription price. Besides the humorous fea tures of the work it contains, a great deal of information that is interesting and instructive. Some of the descriptive passages are masterly specimens oi anility in a line which the author cultivates too little. The descriptions of the alkali desert and of Lake Tahoe are really nne. CITY PERSONALS. The Bard does not aspire to a position on the State Temperance ticket to be placed in nomi nation next week, though he will not decline very vigorously if convinced that his name will add strength to the movement. Rev. Dr. Hosmer, of Antioch College, will preach at the Unitarian Church at the usual hour to-morrow, morning and evening. Miss Kate Fletcher will spend Sabbath Li the city. . Bob. Smith, the blackleg, was in town last evening. His trial for assault and battery with intent to kill will probably take place the latter part of next week. Another full page illustration for J. George Stiltz's work on "Seed Time and Agricultural Implements," arrived to day, andthe book will be ready for delivery April 1st. The real estate market during the past week has been very active, the mild weather having given parties desiring to purchase an opportunity to examine suburban property. The de mand for improved property is still greater than It has been during any part of the . year. THE ALLEN & ROOT ADDITION difficulty having been satisfactorily settled by the parties interested, the demand for . lots in that part of the city has increased, and with it has come an advance in prices. But few lots are offered, however, and are sold without difficulty. S PRIM) DALE ADDITION, on the Fletcher Pike, has been placed in the market by Mr. Vajen, and promises a ready sale. The convenient location of the property to the city, as well as the beautiful ground embraced in it, will render it an attractive locality. THE SOUTH SIDE gives immediate promise of more extensive improvement than any other portion of the city. A very large number, of building permits for residences have been Issued for that part of the city during the past week, while many persons are getting ready for building. BUILDING. Work on D. Root's new block, en East Wash ington street, is progressing very rapidly, and it will be ready for occupation in a few months. Haugh & Co. will begin next week on the ex tension to their machine works, the building to be ninety feet front, and extending back to the alley. Work has commenced on the extension to the Gas Works buildings, the extension to reach from their present buildings to Root's foundry. We hope next week to give a detailed state ment of the building in progress In this city. INDIANAPOLIS FAIR GROUNDS. Mr. John W. Browning, Superintendent of he Indianapolis Fair Grounds, has contracted with Lefever & Buchanan for the removal of the hill obstructing the view of a portion of the track from the Judge's stand. The work will be commenced immediately, and the course and surroundings placed in No. 1 condition for the June races, CITY COURT. James Cant wiil and James Collins paid $17 70 each for indulging in a little friendly affray; Fred Lurrick $11 40 for profanity; Patrick Daily and Peter Shoemaker $ 8 75 each, for being drank and disorderly.
