Front, the Alationat Inltllitrencpr. GRAND CANAL OF NEW YORK. A ontspondent informs us, that the N ihern Canal, commencing at Lake Champlaiu and terminating at its jvinc tion w bh the Western Canal, neir Alban, is 72 nades 1'Mig, anvl neatly. done. The length of the AVcstcrn Canal, as
first laid sut, was 353 miles, but, owing ! or 305 tons for every square mile in tiie
K.s g i .m a ton is a bout cubic yard which makes 300 cubic yards of cole to every mile. If the whole sub surface Were: coal; it would be exhausted in 10 600 years, that if one yard in thickness only, no reasonable conjecture can be made however. The beds of coal in some places are in number five six and seven so that there is every probability that several thousand years will pass by before any great diminution at the present rate ol consumption can take place.
hi some deviations, it is supposed it will
be 360. As it will be finished to Clarkson, 18 1 2 miles beyond Rochester, this mnnth, all will be complete from that to S.henectady this fall, which will leave unfinished, after this year, 66 miles on the west end from Clarkson to Black Kock, and on the east end 72 miles, be rvveen Schenectady and Albany. Of that on the west end, 9 miles will be over -v holly untouched, till ihe next year. All the resr is in progress, and much of tt. considerably advam ed, and it is believed will be nearly finished in 1 824, as will be 'he Northern Canal in IS23. At ti7e termination of the Canal at the upper end of Albany, they are now constructing an expensive Bason, -which is 140 feer wide at the head and, in the middle, the widest part. 450; the average is ab ut 300, and its whole length about 4 0O0 The surface of the Basin wdl be hnua 30 acre3, and the water in it about 10 feet deep.
