From Hp I'rovulnice Jhtiufacturers' Farmery Jjttrmd, dug. 13. John C. Hamilton was executed in Kentucky a few years since (1817,) for the murder of Doctor Sanderson, of Natches, Mississippi; A man has re:e ntly been executed in Mobile, who con l-ssetl himsell the murderer of Sanderson, aid declared that Hamilton was innoClilt. Iht annals of judicial proceedings, rarrly offeicd a report of a trial and execution, nf a more extraordinary and cits trrssirg character than this, and it should be universally circulated, that judges and jurors may br guarded against condemning supposed tulprits on circumstantial evidence. Y umg Hamilton through life had supported in unblemished character; and obtained thj love, esteem unci admiration ot all wh had the pleasure of his acquaintance. As is common with the young gentlemen of Kentucky, he was in tile practice ot spending the winter season in the moie genial climate of Mississippi. On his return from a winter rcsideca - in Iiat ipni te' , he accidentally tell in compa? v v ;h Doctor Sanderson, who being in id hralth, was journeying to the ftdv hratrd watering place at HarrodsburpSpa, w ith hope cf receiving his lost health and .is he was anxious to make something out ( t his pdgt i.-iKige, he to. k with him a large sum of int-ne), with which he conicnipi ited Mir i ha nin. r.egroa or. sp'culation. bbi hs way un the countrv, hts infirmitif s increased. and as he w.is apprehensive h- might expire on the road, he cemmitttL',. to tne charge ol Hamilton h;.3 treasure, having in his short accoiaintaace discovered that he was wuithv of uuhmittd ct nhdence. In a lew days h'Avever, his indisposition abated, when he putsucd his journey, and finally arrived in s ifcty at die residence of Hamilton, in Barren omntv, Kv. where he remained during the sumnu r, and rcrcived from his yt-ung f ritnd cvtrv mark ot courtesy, attention and hospitality. In the month ot October, D ctor Sanderson made ar rangenu n:s to depart, and on takuig leave id h;s hospitable host, vour.yn.imdtc n -i.--ornpa.ned hon several m-les

As ll.iniiSien wa last sriii with him, and a it waa knav.n that ha had from time to time, made use ni sums of money, originally the propem of Suiderson, su)icin fell n his head, atid he was arrested, tticu and execu'f !. Previoa : his arrest, he was advised t leave th . .untry, to avoid danger, but a. he was o.nscioiis ot his iniitcence, he disdained to take a step which would cast a cloud of obh cpjy and disgrace upon his character, and resolutely remained at home. is the inhabitants of the country were divided in their opinions as to his gmlt, the aliair gradually died away; but Hamilton being anxious that a trial should take place, firmly believing that in such'an event h:s reputation would remain unspotttd, he solicited at the hinds of justice a trial which tn his astonishment and sorrow closed with his condemnation. The only evidence against him was circumstantial, viz. that near the body of Sanderson were found a bloody pair of pantaloons, an I a pistol b th beanng the name of Hamilton. Through the whole of the trial he na inifested that fortitude and determined coolness, characteristic of innocence, and expired with a lull conviction that the real murderer would ultimately be discovered. When on the scaffold he took a manly leave of the world; expressed not the least regret for his fate, but lamented that his misfortunes would cloud the prospects ot his family, and shed an indeliable dis race on his memory. Thus through the weak ness of the law, was an interesting voting man and a worthy citizen hurried iroin the world and do mctl to er.piate on the gallows, that crime committed, by the hands of a vllian and avsaasm. It may Le proper for the welfare of the world, to pass sentence on the accused, on the authority of circumstantial evidence, but it would be far better, by statute, to annual the practice ;and it wa: the opinion of lord Hale, that it were better to sulTer ninety guilty persons to cscapev than to punish, unjustly, one that is mnocen'. l;srs Fruiters ; 1 utiM'i vi. in your paper of the 1 2th irnt. a piece higned by Samuel Peck. This gentleman has proposed several questions which he has left me to answer on the new method of tanning.
I have stated that Mr. Jacobs forbid persons telling the secret and that by a bond persons who purchased of 'him were'compelled to keep it inviolable. Whether Mr. Peck is under obligations to keep it or not, I cannot say but a few circuaistances which I shall site, will, I think, prove to the satisfaction of the public, that I was justifiable in the assertion. Was there not a suit brou-nt against one of the parsoas concerned in it, in Scott tountv, for violating his ho rid to ke?p the becres? I rtfer Air. Peck, or any otacr man, to the recoids of the Jcutt circuit court. If Mr. Peck is under no obligations to keep the secret why does he ei join it on those to whom he sells rites." I got it tuna one who was hound to keep it, and shull net evpose him, by teh his name, to a pro;ccuuo: on tha bonduen, like the case bel ne mentioned.
