cf Lawyers, spread over the state. It seems to be the younger member of the profession generally, who engage in this business; and Te presume our readers will join with us in opinion, that ?uch supporters presage nothing practically very sound or discreet, either in selecting a candidate, or adopting judicious means for supporting him. We hotfever feci so much pleasure in the prest nt failure of the scheme to plrdge Ohio as a supporter of Henry Clay, that we shall not 2t present add much more dvan to call our readrrs to the claims of DK W'H I T CLINTON upon their notice. W hatever may be brought forward as a recommendation of Air. Clay, the matter can be found in infinitely more perfection in IWr. Clinton if we except the faculty of making an extempore declarr itorv speech, or a pita to a jury. Whoever ii anxious for internal improvement, for Canals, for Hads, for an improved agriculture, will find in Mr Clinton a head to conceive and a hand to execute, all that can be desired, thry.will find in Mr. Clinton the reality, while in Mr. Clay thev have a mere pretender, whose ole mtrit consists in making frvrv speeches upon such subjects but vvhoenn point to no practical monuments of his iibd ty and zeal. In short, we ttel safe in saying that Mr. Clay's merits are merely in ccpyir.g Mr. Clinton they do not consist in originating or peifccting any thirty whatever. ?dr. Clinton and his friends can point in New York to her grand Canal to her system of free S: hcols to her agriculture, as practical supporters of Clinton's claims. Hut we abk, to what can Mr. Clay or his lriends point as proofs of h';3 capacity or benefi cial lahot?

A man 40 years of age, who is not known under any very favorable circumstances of the nation at large whose strongest claims for admiration or confidence are founded, at best, upon mere talk or declamation, is not the one whom we desire to see put forward at the present time.
