The electiurteerers have seized upon our paper, and seem determined to manage for us, but they must let go their holds after another week and then we will pursue die old course. It had been our determination for some time past, that our pa4er should remain silent on the subject of the approaching election: and should have maintained his position, could we have acted consistent with what we conceive to be our duty a3 publishers of a newspaper. It has alwavs been our opinion that the press h.uld be f ee for the discussion f all subjects, which have a relation to the conduct of men in ( !-i e. and that it should not be under the control of such as aie most able to bribe it infiueno.'; ami with a determination that no pecuniary interes' shall fl'ct ?he politics of our papT, and to steer our course according v, the acceptance of pay for what has already been puh'Mitd has been refused. And we wio it to be understood, that we are ,ov-eroi-d by measures, not men;" and that our press i fi ee for all, ivhoe f ject would seem for the pub.ic ;o.d, witfmut even a ret.-d to our private feeling, as it respects the 5taridiii: and character of men.

IJtdcs Wan led. rjpHE subscriber informs the public, that k. lie will ;ive C cents per pound, in round silver, or leadier at tulver price, for GllE EX HIDES, delivered at his Shop, in Salem. Dry hides will be taken at their real value, the pi ice in pr ('portion to the situation of the hide, fie will also take in hides to tan and finish on the shares, at the rate9 he has formerly done. Anil further he informs the people, that he docs not expect to follow the newinvented plan of giving a private premium fin hides, over and above the market price, in order to draw the custom out of the hands of mv neighbor hide-buyers ; as I look upon thi plan to be of a low and under-minding nature, and beneath the dignity of even half gentlemen. 1 flatter myself, however, that the inventor of this plan will find it to he unpopular, and will no more resort to sin h low and pittiful means of getting hides. Fair play is all that is asked for, by your humble servant, who would suffer many inconveniences before he would take up with the low scheme of undei minding his fellow citizens to increase his own stock.
