F?Uoiv-Citizens, Upon my arrival at this
place on my way to Columbus Court, where
1 had been summoned to attend as a witness, I was presented with the ' Indiana
Farmer,'' printed at i?alem, containing a
list of interrogatories which the w riter pre
Mimes will be answered by myself or
friends It ha been rrv determination not to ap

State, to jusdfv niv i flicial act, if fnr ru other reasons than becaue such a course is
unknown in other states, antl because if
every question which the malevolence of
enemies miht put to me through the pre-s,
should be answered through t.ie same medi
um, more time would be consumed than o.y public ar.d private concerns cuuld possibly ailodt.

qeneroiis attack has ever come within their knowledge. If '-An Old Resident,, were known, it muht appear that he is a citizen of this place: that thos" questions were manufactured here, antl sent to Salem for publication: that thi writer has been a disappointed flice-seeker, or that he belongs to t combination of men ctmiposetl of the slave party, well known a few years past; or a certain other net of men who have united with them for the purpose of destroying my political character, if r.o more. That uch a combination exists and has existed for some time, I pledge myself to my fellow citizens to make appear in due time, and at a more proper season than is selected to attack me. Just at the eve of the election, alter vaiious solicitations and attempts at airanement since February Lit, among a certain number of uent'tmen to whom the secret was to have been confided, with regard to who could he g it out as a candidate most likely to out poll me; and alter consenting anil thn declinit g to become candidates ami after becoming candidates and withdrawing from the list, thev have competed their arrangements a little more thin a month previous to the election : a part of which plan appears thr.-ugh the columns of the hlcm paper, leaving scarce! v time for a reply to reach the dill'erent portions of the District, at:d much less the different parts f the St.ite. I ak my telle rv cdi.ens if in all these things there were no arrangement, no little caucuses in the rounds of the Circuit Courts, arid whether all this exertion was purely to promote the putdic ig o u i i ? The ouestio'.is which ar". rut to me for
answers, are connected vitii transactions, I 11 t ti I
so t.c oi wipcn iranip'.reu nearly twelve vears ago, and all except thre-' of them have been passed upon by my fellow citizens bylarge majorities in my favor. Those questior.s are framed with all the ingenuity of a lawTer, in order to give the public as unfavorable views of the subjects to which they refer as possible, ami would require pages to atl'ird the people a fair and full view of the factsandcitcunistanc.es. Hut notwithstanding my present diud vantage I am required to reply to'them: that reply must therefore be hastily done, or my answers will not reach many to whom this insidious attack w ill be carried. The fir.t question is inid:t:u?', inasmuch as it is, and has been u-.ua! to deposit public monies that were not required tor immediate use, arid if 1 hatl kept the money in my private posses-don these same characters would have charged me with specu lating on it, or something wor'c. It the Male should sustain a lo-s, which I do not as yet admit, (as the St ate has lately obtained a judgment on a f;o Warranto against the Hank) am I more to be censured than the Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, who hatl at that same time a deposit in the same Hank of tw o hundred thousand dollars, and not (trie word heard against that high officer? I used every diligence in that trust, ami when that deposit was made, not only was the State indebted to lh; Hank near ly 50,000 dollars, but the notes of the Hank were Land Office money, ami the Hauk was a bank of deposit for the U. Stales. The next, regard-Vth pre cmption given by Congress to Cannatlian Refugees. The question with regard to the Tippecanoe campaign, speaks the same feelings, an-d is directed to the same objects with regard to me, which at that time were entertained antl exerted by the slave party, and h untrue in pwint of fact, i had my opinions with regard to the cir cumstances which brought about the campaign, and those I still entertain. Who in this state ha done mere than myself fur the widows and orphans of
(hose who fell in that battle? hut these patriotic writers tell you of no such facts. With regard to tiring the temporary eat of government, it will be recollected tia. it was done by ballot Hefore the ballot was taken I was asked by a member from Harrison county, whether I hatl any particular interest as tti where the temporary seat should be fixed: My reply was that I had not, except as it regarded the County of Clark, which I in part represented, i then consented to decline ballo'in, exc p for Clark County, upon the agreement oi others. I was afterwards called on to vorc. when I rose antl statetl the cii cumstances; t?p- n which, Judge Park, a member from Knox, moved that I should be excused from

farmers should be mere attentive to their sheep, hnd not sell their best lam s. Sheep hould never be yarded with ojher cattle: they should be kept in good flesh, that the

" When cloth is made in conformity to these directions, there is no danger cl its working bad in the mill; it will not cockle but be dressed neatly. If a rumher of ham's be employed in spinning a piece, you may expect the cloth will rockt in the mill, and such can never bediessed to appear decently. Some people who proceed in this manner, complain of the clothier, because their cloth tloes not answer the i f expectation. If wool be not properly sorted, spun antl wove, it is impossiole lor any clothier to dress it even deceotlv, 'People wouM do well to m'ike their cloth earlier in the season than usual. State rrison. Kxfract of a letfer dated Philadelphia, May 1, 1BCC. "Thev are laying the foundation of a new State Prison in the vicinity of Philadelphia, upon an expensive plan, hut I think a very excel lent one. I have not yet visited it, hut am informed the plan is to enclose ten acres of ground with a high ami strong stone v.:!l, as a general prison van'. T:.is enclosure is to be subdivided by high wails into as many geparate enclosur cs as they have pr isoners Kadi separate enclosure is to have a cell for tore person only. So that the prisoners are to be kept entirely seoar.Ve, to see no peis n but their keeper, lrom the day they jo in till the day they come out, and yet to he kept continually at hard labar. It is believed this arrangement will answer every purpose of solitary confinement, and still the public derive as much benefit from their labor, a would be derived if they were allowed to work together in the usual way. It must, however, necessarily follow, that the expenses for keepers and overseers will be greater than it is in common prisons; yet I think the advantaged in a moral point of view, that will he derived from keeping the prisoners separate, will more than compensate the public for the extra expense incurred.'
