Olb Bull.’8 Concert.—Morrlaon’4 Opera Hall waa trot 8f> neariv tilled last night, as we hare Men It upon many eccsalona when the entertainment given wae far leu worth going to (M, hut the audience waa, in point of number*, fair, and at regard* intelligence and brilliancy, tar above the average. The entertalnmsnt for the evening was moat excellently arranged, offering a pleating variety, with not enough of any one thing to tire and mar the erjoyment of the hearer. It was opened by Mr. Edward Hoffman la a piano fantasia, played In a very skillful manner, but hardly equal to a subsequent performance, for which be waa heartily encored. Mr. Ignaiz Poliak, lathe aria “Marta dl Rudeuz,” displayed a voice of oonalderaOle power and cultivation, but It waa not until the second part, when he sang “II Maranlro,” a bacarola, that the audience aeeihed to fully appreciate him. Madame Varlan’a sieging of Donizetti’s cavatina, “Inqueato stmpllce,” was charming; her voice, allhought not powerful, la very awee’, and under perfect control. In the course of the evening she sang the famous “French laughing song” In a manner seldom attained by the many who attempt that dilUcult piece. In response to an enthusiastic encore, she gave “Five o’clock In the Morning,” which was an unfortunate selection, for although sang very well, the contrast with Parepa’a execution of that ballad,'forced itself upon nearly every one present. Herr Bergsteln, of this city, also sang an air from the oratorio of St. Paul. Of course the principal attraction was Ole Bull, and before bis presence, tbo other stars, no matter bow brilliant, paled. He wa* received with great applause, which died away in a profound stillness before tbo first strain was beard. Nor was tbo silence broken during the whole time he was playing the “Nightingale Fantasia,” one of bis own productions, and, Indeed, ho bad almost retired from the stage, before the audience recovered sufficiently to applaud. To criticise such a performance, would bo more than superrogatory. To; our untrained ear, his execution seemed faultless, end the only Cmlt was that It ended too soon. The “Mother’s Prayer,” however, seemed to please the audience better, for It was a piece appealing more to the feelings; Its tones, at times, low and tremulous, as if pleading, aud again, clear and firm, as if thankful ami exultant, were indeed ih ''breathings of a better spirit.” The tempestuous encore that followed would admit of no denial, aud the great violinist responded with a medley comprising “Home sweet Home” with variations, ‘'Hail Columbia,” “Yankee Doodle” and “Fishers Hornpipe.” in the second part after playing the “Carnival of Venice” ho was again encored, and again responded, evoking tones from the Instrument that no ouu would have dreamed were lodged there, and causing everybody to ask as did one enthusiastic admirer rather audibly, “What couldn’t be do with the fiddle?” We have deep compassion for tha lovers of music who were not there last night, and only hope that Mr. Bull will see proper to visit this city again before be returns to his native land, for we can confidently promise a larger, although not a more appreciative audience than he had last night.
